Operator entanglement of two-qubit joint unitary operations revisited: Schmidt number approach
Operator entanglement of two-qubit joint unitary operations is revisited.
Schmidt number is an important attribute of a two-qubit unitary operation, and
may have connection with the entanglement measure of the unitary operator. We
found the entanglement measure of two-qubit unitary operators is classified by
the Schmidt number of the unitary operators. The exact relation between the
operator entanglement and the parameters of the unitary operator is clarified
too.Comment: To appear in the Brazilian Journal of Physic
Serum microRNA array analysis identifies miR-140-3p, miR-33b-3p and miR-671-3p as potential osteoarthritis biomarkers involved in metabolic processes.
Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in circulation have emerged as promising biomarkers. In this study, we aimed to identify a circulating miRNA signature for osteoarthritis (OA) patients and in combination with bioinformatics analysis to evaluate the utility of selected differentially expressed miRNAs in the serum as potential OA biomarkers. Methods: Serum samples were collected from 12 primary OA patients, and 12 healthy individuals were screened using the Agilent Human miRNA Microarray platform interrogating 2549 miRNAs. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the deregulated miRNAs. Expression levels of selected miRNAs were validated by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) in all serum and in articular cartilage samples from OA patients (n = 12) and healthy individuals (n = 7). Bioinformatics analysis was used to investigate the involved pathways and target genes for the above miRNAs. Results: We identified 279 differentially expressed miRNAs in the serum of OA patients compared to controls. Two hundred and five miRNAs (73.5%) were upregulated and 74 (26.5%) downregulated. ROC analysis revealed that 77 miRNAs had area under the curve (AUC) > 0.8 and p < 0.05. Bioinformatics analysis in the 77 miRNAs revealed that their target genes were involved in multiple signaling pathways associated with OA, among which FoxO, mTOR, Wnt, pI3K/akt, TGF-β signaling pathways, ECM-receptor interaction, and fatty acid biosynthesis. qRT-PCR validation in seven selected out of the 77 miRNAs revealed 3 significantly downregulated miRNAs (hsa-miR-33b-3p, hsa-miR-671-3p, and hsa-miR-140-3p) in the serum of OA patients, which were in silico predicted to be enriched in pathways involved in metabolic processes. Target-gene analysis of hsa-miR-140-3p, hsa-miR-33b-3p, and hsa-miR-671-3p revealed that InsR and IGFR1 were common targets of all three miRNAs, highlighting their involvement in regulation of metabolic processes that contribute to OA pathology. Hsa-miR-140-3p and hsa-miR-671-3p expression levels were consistently downregulated in articular cartilage of OA patients compared to healthy individuals. Conclusions: A serum miRNA signature was established for the first time using high density resolution miR-arrays in OA patients. We identified a three-miRNA signature, hsa-miR-140-3p, hsa-miR-671-3p, and hsa-miR-33b-3p, in the serum of OA patients, predicted to regulate metabolic processes, which could serve as a potential biomarker for the evaluation of OA risk and progression.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Plasma optical shutter in ultraintense laser-foil interaction
We report on a plasma optical shutter to reduce the intensity level of a nanosecond-duration pedestal of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) using an ultrathin foil. The foil is ionized by the ASE prepulse and forms an expanding underdense preplasma, which enables the main laser pulse transmission, leading to an enhancement in temporal contrast. When such a plasma shutter is placed in front of a main target of interest, the preplasma profiles observed are similar to that produced from a single-layer reference target irradiated by a high-contrast laser, and can be finely tuned by varying the shutter thickness. Proton beams with significantly reduced divergence and higher flux density were measured experimentally using the double-foil design. The reduction in beam divergence is a characteristic signature of higher contrast laser production as a combined consequence of less target deformation and flatter sheath-acceleration field, as supported by the two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic and particle-in-cell simulations. The plasma shutter holds the promise to enhance the laser contrast and manipulate the preplasma conditions for application in high-field-physics experiments
Subtyping relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis using structural MRI
Background and purpose:
Subtyping relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients may help predict disease progression and triage patients for treatment. We aimed to subtype RRMS patients by structural MRI and investigate their clinical significances. /
Methods:
155 relapse-remitting MS (RRMS) and 210 healthy controls (HC) were retrospectively enrolled with structural 3DT1, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional MRI. Z scores of cortical and deep gray matter volumes (CGMV and DGMV) and white matter fractional anisotropy (WM-FA) in RRMS patients were calculated based on means and standard deviations of HC. We defined RRMS as “normal” (− 2 < z scores of both GMV and WM-FA), DGM (z scores of DGMV < − 2), and DGM-plus types (z scores of DGMV and [CGMV or WM-FA] < − 2) according to combinations of z scores compared to HC. Expanded disability status scale (EDSS), cognitive and functional MRI measurements, and conversion rate to secondary progressive MS (SPMS) at 5-year follow-up were compared between subtypes. /
Results:
77 (49.7%) patients were “normal” type, 37 (23.9%) patients were DGM type and 34 (21.9%) patients were DGM-plus type. 7 (4.5%) patients who were not categorized into the above types were excluded. DGM-plus type had the highest EDSS. Both DGM and DGM-plus types had more severe cognitive impairment than “normal” type. Only DGM-plus type showed decreased functional MRI measures compared to HC. A higher conversion ratio to SPMS in DGM-plus type (55%) was identified compared to “normal” type (14%, p < 0.001) and DGM type (20%, p = 0.005). /
Conclusion:
Three MRI-subtypes of RRMS were identified with distinct clinical and imaging features and different prognosis
Structural and functional hippocampal alterations in Multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder
Background:
Hippocampal involvement may differ between multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD).
Objective:
To investigate the morphometric, diffusion and functional alterations in hippocampus in MS and NMOSD and the clinical significance.
Methods:
A total of 752 participants including 236 MS, 236 NMOSD and 280 healthy controls (HC) were included in this retrospective multi-center study. The hippocampus and subfield volumes, fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD), amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and degree centrality (DC) were analyzed, and their associations with clinical variables were investigated.
Results:
The hippocampus showed significantly lower volume, FA and greater MD in MS compared to NMOSD and HC (p 0.7).
Conclusions:
Hippocampal atrophy and diffusion abnormalities were identified in MS and NMOSD, partly explaining how clinical disability and cognitive impairment are differentially affected
Conditions for the freezing phenomena of geometric measure of quantum discord for arbitrary two-qubit X states under non-dissipative dephasing noises
We study the dynamics of geometric measure of quantum discord (GMQD) under
the influences of two local phase damping noises. Consider the two qubits
initially in arbitrary X-states, we find the necessary and sufficient
conditions for which GMQD is unaffected for a finite period. It is further
shown that such results also hold for the non-Markovian dephasing process.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Interacting model of new agegraphic dark energy: observational constraints and age problem
Many dark energy models fail to pass the cosmic age test because of the old
quasar APM 08279+5255 at redshift , the CDM model and
holographic dark energy models being no exception. In this paper, we focus on
the topic of age problem in the new agegraphic dark energy (NADE) model. We
determine the age of the universe in the NADE model by fitting the
observational data, including type Ia supernovae (SNIa), baryon acoustic
oscillations (BAO) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We find that the
NADE model also faces the challenge of the age problem caused by the old quasar
APM 08279+5255. In order to overcome such a difficulty, we consider the
possible interaction between dark energy and dark matter. We show that this
quasar can be successfully accommodated in the interacting new agegraphic dark
energy (INADE) model at the level under the current observational
constraints.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures; typos corrected; version for publication in
