An analysis of the cobweb model with boundedly rational heterogeneous producers

This paper considers the traditional cobweb model with heterogenous risk averse producers whose supply functions involve their estimates of the conditional mean and variance of the future price. The producers seek to learn these quantities by applying geometric decay processes (GDP) to past prices. The heterogeneity manifests itself in the lag lengths and memory parameters applied to past prices as well as in risk aversion coefficients. We find that each dimension of heterogeneity changes/enriches the cobweb dynamics with respect to the case of homogeneous producers. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Does the market maker stabilize the market?

The market maker plays an important role in price formation, but his/her behavior and stabilizing impact on the market are relatively unclear, in particular in speculative markets. This paper develops a financial market model that examines the impact on market stability of the market maker, who acts as both a liquidity provider and an active investor in a market consisting of two types of boundedly rational speculative investors-the fundamentalists and trend followers. We show that the market maker does not necessarily stabilize the market when he/she actively manages the inventory to maximize profits, and that rather the market maker's impact depends on the behavior of the speculators. Numerical simulations show that the model is able to generate outcomes for asset returns and market inventories that are consistent with empirical findings. © 2009

Image-based compression, prioritized transmission and progressive rendering of circular light fields (CLFS) for ancient Chinese artifacts

    Get PDF
This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for the compression, prioritized transmission and progressive rendering of circular light field (CLF) for ancient Chinese artifacts. It employs wavelet coder to achieve spatial scalability and divide the compressed data into a lower resolution base layer and an additional enhancement layer. The enhancement layer is coded as in JPEG2000 into packets where the base-layer is coded using disparity compensation prediction (DCP). The frame structure is designed to provide efficient access to the compressed data in order to support selective transmission and decoding. The depth and alpha maps are coded analogously. A prioritized transmission scheme which support interactive progressive rendering is also proposed to further reduce the latency and response time of rendering. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2010 IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS), Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, 6-9 December 2010. An Improved Method for Monitoring Multiscale Plant Species Diversity of Alpine Grassland Using UAV: A Case Study in the Source Region of the Yellow River, China.

Plant species diversity (PSD) is essential in evaluating the function and developing the management and conservation strategies of grassland. However, over a large region, an efficient and high precision method to monitor multiscale PSD (α-, β-, and γ-diversity) is lacking. In this study, we proposed and improved an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based PSD monitoring method (UAVB) and tested the feasibility, and meanwhile, explored the potential relationship between multiscale PSD and precipitation on the alpine grassland of the source region of the Yellow River (SRYR), China. Our findings showed that: (1) UAVB was more representative (larger monitoring areas and more species identified with higher α- and γ-diversity) than the traditional ground-based monitoring method, though a few specific species (small in size) were difficult to identify; (2) UAVB is suitable for monitoring the multiscale PSD over a large region (the SRYR in this study), and the improvement by weighing the dominance of species improved the precision of α-diversity (higher R 2 and lower P values of the linear regressions); and (3) the species diversity indices (α- and β-diversity) increased first and then they tended to be stable with the increase of precipitation in SRYR. These findings conclude that UAVB is suitable for monitoring multiscale PSD of an alpine grassland community over a large region, which will be useful for revealing the relationship of diversity-function, and helpful for conservation and sustainable management of the alpine grassland.Published onlin

MiR-223 Suppresses Cell Proliferation by Targeting IGF-1R

To study the roles of microRNA-223 (miR-223) in regulation of cell growth, we established a miR-223 over-expression model in HeLa cells infected with miR-223 by Lentivirus pLL3.7 system. We observed in this model that miR-223 significantly suppressed the proliferation, growth rate, colony formation of HeLa cells in vitro, and in vivo tumorigenicity or tumor formation in nude mice. To investigate the mechanisms involved, we scanned and examined the potential and putative target molecules of miR-223 by informatics, quantitative PCR and Western blot, and found that insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) was the functional target of miR-223 inhibition of cell proliferation. Targeting IGF-1R by miR-223 was not only seen in HeLa cells, but also in leukemia and hepatoma cells. The downstream pathway, Akt/mTOR/p70S6K, to which the signal was mediated by IGF-1R, was inhibited as well. The relative luciferase activity of the reporter containing wild-type 3′UTR(3′untranslated region) of IGF-1R was significantly suppressed, but the mutant not. Silence of IGF-1R expression by vector-based short hairpin RNA resulted in the similar inhibition with miR-223. Contrarily, rescued IGF-1R expression in the cells that over-expressed miR-223, reversed the inhibition caused by miR-223 via introducing IGF-1R cDNA that didn't contain the 3′UTR. Meanwhile, we also noted that miR-223 targeted Rasa1, but the downstream molecules mediated by Rasa1 was neither targeted nor regulated. Therefore we believed that IGF-1R was the functional target for miR-223 suppression of cell proliferation and its downstream PI3K/Akt/mTOR/p70S6K pathway suppressed by miR-223 was by targeting IGF-1R
