Development in pedometrics has not only shaped the research agenda in soil science but also attracted the attention of practitioners from other communities such as environmental modelling and land management who require digital information on soils. At the same time, demands from these communities and developments in information technology help to fuel and drive the research agenda of pedometrics. These factors have combined to draw scientists with diverse backgrounds and interests into the field of pedometrics over its short history as a distinctive subdiscipline of soil science

Constrained tropical land temperature-precipitation sensitivity reveals decreasing evapotranspiration and faster vegetation greening in CMIP6 3 projections

AbstractOver the tropical land surface, accurate estimates of future changes in temperature, precipitation and evapotranspiration are crucial for ecological sustainability, but remain highly uncertain. Here we develop a series of emergent constraints (ECs) by using historical and future outputs from the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Earth System Models under the four basic Shared Socio-economic Pathway scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585). Results show that the temperature sensitivity to precipitation during 2015–2100, which varies substantially in the original CMIP6 outputs, becomes systematically negative across SSPs after application of the EC, with absolute values between −1.10 °C mm−1 day and −3.52 °C mm−1 day, and with uncertainties reduced by 9.4% to 41.4%. The trend in tropical land-surface evapotranspiration, which was increasing by 0.292 mm yr−1 in the original CMIP6 model outputs, becomes significantly negative (−0.469 mm yr−1) after applying the constraint. Moreover, we find a significant increase of 58.7% in the leaf area index growth rate.</jats:p

Homogenization and polarization of the seasonal water discharge of global rivers in response to climatic and anthropogenic effects

We investigate global trends in seasonal water discharge using data from 5668 hydrological stations in catchments whose total drainage area accounts for 2/3 of the Earth's total land area. Homogenization of water discharge, which occurs when the gap in water discharge between dry and flood seasons shrinks significantly, affects catchments occupying 2/5 of the total land area, and is mainly concentrated in Eurasia and North America. By contrast, polarization of water discharge, associated with widening of the gap in water discharge between dry and flood seasons, occurs in catchments covering 1/6 of the land area, most notably in the Amazon Basin and river basins in West Africa. Considering the major climatic and anthropogenic controlling factors, i.e. precipitation (P), evaporation (E), glacial runoff (G), and dam operations (D), the world's river basins are classified as P, DEP, GEP, and EP types. Contributions from each controlling factor to either the homogenization or polarization of the seasonal water discharge for each type of river have been analyzed. We found that homogenization of discharge is dominated by dam operations in GDEP and DEP river basins (contributing 48% and 64%) and by homogenized precipitation in GEP and EP river basins. Evaporation and precipitation are primary factors behind the polarization of discharge, contributing 56% and 41%. This study provides a basis for a possible decision tool for controlling drought/flood disasters and for assessing and preventing ecological damage in endangered regions

Levels and trends of maternal death in Baoan district, Shenzhen, China, 1999–2022

BackgroundChina had achieved impressive success in improving maternal health, while the progress of reducing maternal mortality ratio (MMR) varied across regions. Some studies had reported maternal mortality from national or provincial perspective, but researches of the MMR on long-term period at the city or county level rare been reported. Shenzhen has experienced significant socioeconomic and health changes, reflecting the typical development of China's coastal city. This study mainly introduced the levels and trends of maternal death in Baoan district, Shenzhen from 1999 to 2022.MethodsMaternal mortality data were extracted from registration forms and the Shenzhen Maternal and Child Health Management System. Linear-by-Linear Association tests were used to evaluate the trends of MMR among different groups. The study periods were divided into three stages by 8-year interval and χ2 test or Fisher's test was used to test the difference in maternal deaths of different periods.ResultsDuring 1999–2022, a total of 137 maternal deaths occurred in Baoan, the overall MMR was 15.91 per 100,000 live births, declined by 89.31% with an annualized rate of 9.26%. The MMR declined by 68.15% in migrant population, with an annualized rate of 5.07%, faster than that in permanent population (48.73%, 2.86%). The MMR due to direct and indirect obstetric causes shown a downward trend (P<0.001) and the gap between them narrowed to 14.29% during 2015–2022. The major causes of maternal deaths were obstetric hemorrhage (4.41 per 100,000 live births), amniotic fluid embolism (3.37 per 100,000 live births), medical complications (2.44 per 100,000 live births) and pregnancy-induced hypertension (1.97 per 100,000 live births), the MMR due to the above causes all shown decreasing trends (P < 0.01), pregnancy-induced hypertension became the leading cause of deaths during 2015–2022. The constituent ratio of maternal deaths with advanced age significantly increased by 57.78% in 2015–2022 compared with in 1999–2006.ConclusionsBaoan district had made encouraging progress in improving maternal survival, especially in migrant population. To further reduce the MMR, strengthening professional training to improve the capacity of obstetricians and physicians, increasing the awareness and ability of self-help health care among elderly pregnant women were in urgent need

Erosion-deposition patterns and depo-center movements in branching channels at the near-estuary reach of the Yangtze River

Channel evolution and depo-center migrations in braided reaches are significantly influenced by variations in runoff. This study examines the effect of runoff variations on the erosion-deposition patterns and depocenter movements within branching channels of the near-estuary reach of the Yangtze River. We assume that variations in annual mean duration days of runoff discharges, ebb partition ratios in branching channels, and the erosional/depositional rates of entire channels and sub-reaches are representative of variations in runoff intensity, flow dynamics in branching channels, and morphological features in the channels. Our results show that the north region of Fujiangsha Waterway, the Liuhaisha branch of Rugaosha Waterway, the west branch of Tongzhousha Waterway, and the west branch of Langshansha Waterway experience deposition or reduced erosion under low runoff intensity, and erosion or reduced deposition under high runoff intensity, with the depocenters moving upstream and downstream, respectively. Other waterway branches undergo opposite trends in erosion-deposition patterns and depo-center movements as the runoff changes. These morphological changes may be associated with trends in ebb partition ratio as the runoff discharge rises and falls. By flattening the intra-annual distribution of runoff discharge, dam construction in the Yangtze Basin has altered the ebb partition ratios in waterway branches, affecting their erosion-deposition patterns and depo-center movements. Present trends are likely to continue into the future due to the succession of large cascade dams under construction along the upper Yangtze and ongoing climate change

A dead reckoning localization method for in-pipe detector of water supply pipeline: an application to leak localization

Urban water supply pipeline system integrity is important for the urban life. The aim of the study reported in this paper is to locate the water pipeline leaks by using an in-pipe detector. In this study, a mathematical model is extracted from an actual inspection system. By using the homogeneous transformation theory, transformation matrix which is from carrier to a reference coordinate system is deduced, and then the global transformation matrix is obtained to describe the detector’s posture. Through measuring the distance increment of each sample time step in carrier coordinate system, the cumulative distance result is calculated. After combining the data of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and odometer, the leak can be located. To improve the accuracy of leak localization, the magnetic markers are implemented about one in each 1 km distance, which provide reference points to be used to compensate accumulative error during the localization process. Furthermore, a dead reckoning localization method combining data of a micro electro-mechanical IMU, three odometers, and magnetic markers is proposed. To verify above localization algorithm, a simulation case study is conducted with the artificial error generated by the white noise. The simulation results show that the dead reckoning algorithm can effectively provide leak locations with a reasonable uncertainty. Based on this, an experimental platform was built in this study. The experimental results show that the relative error of leak locating achieves a reasonably good performanc
