A bibliometric study of the research field of experimental philosophy of language
The past eighteen years witnessed the rapid development of experimental philosophy of language. Adopting a bibliometric approach, this study examines the research trends and status quo of this burgeoning field based on a corpus of 237 publications retrieved from PhilPapers. It is observed that experimental philosophy of language has undergone three stages, the initiation stage, the development stage, and the extension stage, across which there is a clear upward trend in the annual number of publications. Michael Devitt, Edouard Machery, John Turri, Nat Hansen, et al., are found to be the most productive philosophers, testifying their leading positions in this field. Journals, instead of books, are the major homes of works in this area. The analysis also yields a list of influential works, including the seminal work “Semantics, Cross-cultural Style” and other significant publications on the semantics of various types of expressions. Relatedly, the major research themes are found to include not only intuitions about the reference of proper names, but also a wide array of philosophically and linguistically interesting issues like the meaning of color adjectives, epistemic modals, and predicates of personal taste, the norms of assertions and the essence of lies, etc. These findings showcase that experimental philosophy of language has broadened the research territory and offered deep insights into central issues of philosophy of language that are beyond the reach of the conventional armchair methodology
Morinda Officinalis
Varicoceles (VCs) are the predominant cause of male infertility and are a risk factor for chronic venous disease. Morinda officinalis (M. officinalis) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to tonify the kidney and strengthen yang. In this study, we evaluated the effects of water-soluble polysaccharides extracted from M. officinalis (MOPs) on gonadotropin-release hormone (GnRH) secretion in a classic experimental left VC (ELV) rat model. Intragastric administration of MOPs at a dose ranging from 50 mg kg−1 to 100 mg kg−1 facilitated improvements in sperm parameters and seminiferous epithelial structures, modulated serum hormone profiles, and stimulated GnRH synthesis and release in the hypothalamus. MOPs also promoted spinogenesis and functional spine maturation in the arcuate nuclei (Arc), wherein they acted mainly on Kiss1 and GnRH neurons. Moreover, MOP-mediated Kisspeptin-GPR54 pathway upregulation and MAPK phosphorylation activation may have been responsible for increases in GnRH synthesis and release. Collectively, the findings of this study indicate that MOPs were effective in stimulating GnRH secretion, possibly by upregulating the Kiss1/GPR54 pathway and enhancing synaptic plasticity, and that MOPs can serve as a therapy for early VCs
High Level of CXCR4 in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Specimens Associated with a Poor Clinical Outcome
Despite high sensitivity to chemotherapy, the prognosis for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains poor because of its high rate of metastasis and low sensitivity to endocrine therapy. CXCR4 expression has been reported in many subtypes of human breast cancers, but it remains unknown whether CXCR4 is expressed in TNBC and whether CXCR4 expression in TNBC could be a prognostic indicator. TNBCs tissues were formalin fixed, paraffin embedded and hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stained. Immunohistochemical staining was utilized to determine the CXCR4 expression in those specimens.
Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS16.0 software to reveal the correlation of CXCR4 expression in TNBC specimens and cancer recurrence and cancer-related death. Our results showed that there was a strong association between CXCR4 overexpression and both menopause and the histological
cancer grade of TNBC patients (p values were separately 0.004 and 0.001). The 5-y disease-free survival (DFS) and the 5-y overall survival (OS) were 57.69% and 58.33% for the low-CXCR4 group versus 42.11% and 44.74% for the high-CXCR4 group, respectively (p=0.031 and 0.048). CXCR4 overexpression

Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting may cause anxiety and depression in the family caregivers of patients with cancer
ObjectiveTo investigate the impact of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) on the anxiety and depression of the primary family caregivers of patients with cancer.MethodsThis study screened family caregivers of patients with cancer undergoing highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC) containing a 3-day cisplatin regime. Caregivers who did not experience anxiety or depression at baseline screening were enrolled in this study. Based on the patients’ CINV status during chemotherapy, their family caregivers were divided into two groups: patients who experienced CINV (CINV group) and patients who did not experience CINV (No-CINV group). All enrolled family caregivers completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire on the fourth and 8 days of chemotherapy.ResultsA total of 256 family caregivers were screened for this study, of which 195 caregivers without anxiety or depression at baseline were included. A total of 150 (76.9%) patients undergoing chemotherapy experienced acute CINV; 63 (42%) of their family caregivers experienced anxiety, and 65 (43.3%) developed depression. This was significantly higher than the experiences of the No-CINV group (2.2%, P < 0.001; 0%, P < 0.001, respectively). Among the patients undergoing chemotherapy, 86 (44.1%) experienced delayed CINV. The incidence of anxiety and depression in the family caregivers of patients with delayed CINV were 27.9 and 36%, respectively, both of which were significantly higher than that in the family caregivers of the No-CINV group (0.9%, P < 0.001; and 0.9%, P < 0.001, respectively).ConclusionAcute and delayed CINV occurring in patients during chemotherapy may induce anxiety and depression in their family caregivers
Thoracic endovascular aortic repair under venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for acute aortic dissection patients: a case report
BackgroundOpen repair and replacement of the diseased aorta is still the standard treatment for type A aortic dissection (TAAD) in most patients. In endovascular treatment alone, ensuring adequate blood supply to the brain while covering the dissection with a stent is difficult.Case presentationThis study includes a 71-year-old male patient with type A aortic dissection presented at a recent follow-up examination after having undergone thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) plus left subclavian artery chimney stent reconstruction for descending aortic dissection 5 years ago. Preoperative computed tomographic angiography, computed tomographic perfusion, and transcranial Doppler showed an intact cerebral arterial ring and good collateral circulation. We successfully performed an endovascular repair of the thoracic aorta with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) to protect the craniocerebral blood supply, greatly increase the safety of the operation, and ensure a good prognosis.ConclusionTEVAR under V-A ECMO protection is beneficial for patients with TAAD because of its minimal trauma, rapid recovery, few complications, and low mortality

The Influence of Education on Chinese Version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment in Detecting Amnesic Mild Cognitive Impairment among Older People in a Beijing Rural Community
To assess the influence of education on the performance of Chinese version of Montreal cognitive assessment (C-MoCA) in relation to the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) in detecting amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) among rural-dwelling older people C-MoCA and MMSE was administered and diagnostic interviews were conducted among community-dwelling elderly in two villages in Beijing. The performance of C-MoCA and MMSE in detecting aMCI was evaluated by the area under the ROC curve (AUC). Effect size of education on variations in C-MoCA scores was estimated with general linear model. Among 172 study participants (24 cases of aMCI and 148 normal controls), the AUC of C-MoCA was 0.72 (95% CI = 0.62–0.81, cutoff = 20/21), compared to AUC of MMSE of 0.74 (95% CI = 0.64–0.84, cutoff = 26/27). The performance of both C-MoCA and MMSE was especially poorer among those with low (0–6 years) education. After controlling for gender and age, education (η2 = 0.204) had a surpassing effect over aMCI diagnosis (η2 = 0.052) on variations in C-MoCA scores. Among rural older people, the MoCA showed modest accuracy and was no better than MMSE in detecting aMCI, especially in those with low education, due to the overwhelming effect of education relative to aMCI diagnosis on variations in C-MoCA performance
l-Tetrahydropalmatine, an Active Component of Corydalis yanhusuo W.T. Wang, Protects against Myocardial Ischaemia-Reperfusion Injury in Rats
l-Tetrahydropalmatine (l-THP) is an active ingredients of Corydalis yanhusuo W.T. Wang, which protects against acute global cerebral ischaemia-reperfusion injury. In this study, we show that l-THP is cardioprotective in myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury and examined the mechanism. Rats were treated with l-THP (0, 10, 20, 40 mg/kg b.w.) for 20 min before occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery and subjected to myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion (30 min/6 h). Compared with vehicle-treated animals, the infarct area/risk area (IA/RA) of l-THP (20, 40 mg/kg b.w.) treated rats was reduced, whilst l-THP (10 mg/kg b.w.) had no significant effect. Cardiac function was improved in l-THP-treated rats whilst plasma creatine kinase activity declined. Following treatment with l-THP (20 mg/kg b.w.), subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase p85, serine473 phosphorylation of Akt and serine1177 phosphorylation of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) increased in myocardium, whilst expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) decreased. However, the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF were increased in I30 minR6 h, but decreased to normal level in I30 minR24 h, while treatment with l-THP (20 mg/kg b.w.) enhanced the levels of these two genes in I30 minR24 h. Production of NO in myocardium and plasma, activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) in plasma and the expression of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in myocardium were decreased by l-THP. TUNEL assay revealed that l-THP (20 mg/kg b.w.) reduced apoptosis in myocardium. Thus, we show that l-THP activates the PI3K/Akt/eNOS/NO pathway and increases expression of HIF-1α and VEGF, whilst depressing iNOS-derived NO production in myocardium. This effect may decrease the accumulation of inflammatory factors, including TNF-α and MPO, and lessen the extent of apoptosis, therefore contributing to the cardioprotective effects of l-THP in myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury
Efficacy and safety of low-dose IL-2 in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Objectives Open-labelled clinical trials suggested that
low-dose IL-2 might be effective in treatment of systemic
lupus erythematosus (SLE). A double-blind and placebocontrolled trial is required to formally evaluate the safety and efficacy of low-dose IL-2 therapy.
Methods A randomised, double-blind and placebocontrolled
clinical trial was designed to treat 60 patients
with active SLE. These patients received either IL-2
(n=30) or placebo (n=30) with standard treatment
for 12 weeks, and were followed up for additional 12
weeks. IL-2 at a dose of 1 million IU or placebo was
administered subcutaneously every other day for 2 weeks
and followed by a 2-week break as one treatment cycle.
The primary endpoint was the SLE Responder Index-4
(SRI-4) at week 12. The secondary endpoints were other
clinical responses, safety and dynamics of immune cell
subsets.
Results At week 12, the SRI-4 response rates were
55.17% and 30.00% for IL-2 and placebo, respectively
(p=0.052). At week 24, the SRI-4 response rate of IL-2
group was 65.52%, compared with 36.67% of the
placebo group (p=0.027). The primary endpoint was not
met at week 12. Low-dose IL-2 treatment resulted in
53.85% (7/13) complete remission in patients with lupus
nephritis, compared with 16.67% (2/12) in the placebo
group (p=0.036). No serious infection was observed
in the IL-2 group, but two in placebo group. Besides
expansion of regulatory T cells, low-dose IL-2 may also
sustain cellular immunity with enhanced natural killer
cells.
