First-Principles Study of Integer Quantum Hall Transitions in Mesoscopic Samples

We perform first principles numerical simulations to investigate resistance fluctuations in mesoscopic samples, near the transition between consecutive Quantum Hall plateaus. We use six-terminal geometry and sample sizes similar to those of real devices. The Hall and longitudinal resistances extracted from the generalized Landauer formula reproduce all the experimental features uncovered recently. We then use a simple generalization of the Landauer-B\"uttiker model, based on the interplay between tunneling and chiral currents -- the co-existing mechanisms for transport -- to explain the three distinct types of fluctuations observed, and identify the central region as the critical region.Comment: changes to acknowledgements onl

Effect of Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction on magnetic vortex

The effect of the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction on the vortex in magnetic microdisk was investigated by micro magnetic simulation based on the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert equation. Our results show that the DM interaction modifies the size of the vortex core, and also induces an out of plane magnetization component at the edge and inside the disk. The DM interaction can destabilizes one vortex handedness, generate a bias field to the vortex core and couple the vortex polarity and chirality. This DM-interaction-induced coupling can therefore provide a new way to control vortex polarity and chirality

Real and Monetary Convergence within the European Union and Between the European Union and Candidate Countries: A Rolling Cointegration Approach

We use rolling cointegration to measure the convergence of base money, M2, the consumer price index and industrial output between two reference countries, Germany and France, and recent EU members and some transition economy candidates. Counties that recently joined the EU exhibit time-varying cointegration with the reference countries over much of the 1980-2000 sample period. Cointegration for the transition economies was comparable for M2 and prices, but less so for monetary policy and industrial output. This suggests that a peg to the Euro upon accession is feasible for the East European candidates, but the benefits of joining the Euro zone are as yet limited.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39842/3/wp458.pd

Conditions for Nondistortion Interrogation of Quantum System

Under some physical considerations, we present a universal formulation to study the possibility of localizing a quantum object in a given region without disturbing its unknown internal state. When the interaction between the object and probe wave function takes place only once, we prove the necessary and sufficient condition that the object's presence can be detected in an initial state preserving way. Meanwhile, a conditioned optimal interrogation probability is obtained.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex, 1 figures, Presentation improved, corollary 1 added. To appear in Europhysics Letter

Quasiperiodic, periodic, and slowing-down states of coupled heteroclinic cycles

We investigate two coupled oscillators, each of which shows an attracting heteroclinic cycle in the absence of coupling. The two heteroclinic cycles are nonidentical. Weak coupling can lead to the elimination of the slowing-down state that asymptotically approaches the heteroclinic cycle for a single cycle, giving rise to either quasiperiodic motion with separate frequencies from the two cycles or periodic motion in which the two cycles are synchronized. The synchronization transition, which occurs via a Hopf bifurcation, is not induced by the commensurability of the two cycle frequencies but rather by the disappearance of the weaker frequency oscillation. For even larger coupling the motion changes via a resonant heteroclinic bifurcation to a slowing-down state corresponding to a single attracting heteroclinic orbit. Coexistence of multiple attractors can be found for some parameter regions. These results are of interest in ecological, sociological, neuronal, and other dynamical systems, which have the structure of coupled heteroclinic cycles
