Understanding the e+eβˆ’β†’D(βˆ—)+D(βˆ—)βˆ’e^+e^-\to D^{(*)+}D^{(*)-} processes observed by Belle

We calculate the production cross sections for Dβˆ—+Dβˆ—βˆ’D^{*+}D^{*-}, D+Dβˆ—βˆ’D^+D^{*-} and D+Dβˆ’D^+D^- in e+eβˆ’e^+e^- annihilation through one virtual photon in the framework of perturbative QCD with constituent quarks. The calculated cross sections for Dβˆ—+Dβˆ—βˆ’D^{*+}D^{*-} and D+Dβˆ—βˆ’D^+D^{*-} production are roughly in agreement with the recent Belle data. The helicity decomposition for Dβˆ—D^{*} meson production is also calculated. The fraction of the DLβˆ—Β±DTβˆ—βˆ“D^{*\pm}_LD^{*\mp}_T final state in e+eβˆ’β†’Dβˆ—+Dβˆ—βˆ’e^+e^-\to D^{*+}D^{*-} process is found to be 65%. The fraction of DDTβˆ—DD^*_T production is 100% and DDLβˆ—DD^*_L is forbidden in e+eβˆ’e^+e^- annihilation through one virtual photon. We further consider e+eβˆ’e^+e^- annihilation through two virtual photons, and then find the fraction of DDTβˆ—DD^{*}_T in e+eβˆ’β†’DDβˆ—e^+e^-\to DD^{*} process to be about 91%.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Extracellular signal-regulated kinases mediate the enhancing effects of inflammatory mediators on resurgent currents in dorsal root ganglion neurons

Previously we reported that a group of inflammatory mediators significantly enhanced resurgent currents in dorsal root ganglion neurons. To understand the underlying intracellular signaling mechanism, we investigated the effects of inhibition of extracellular signal-regulated kinases and protein kinase C on the enhancing effects of inflammatory mediators on resurgent currents in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons. We found that the extracellular signal-regulated kinases inhibitor U0126 completely prevented the enhancing effects of the inflammatory mediators on both Tetrodotoxin-sensitive and Tetrodotoxin-resistant resurgent currents in both small and medium dorsal root ganglion neurons. U0126 substantially reduced repetitive firing in small dorsal root ganglion neurons exposed to inflammatory mediators, consistent with prevention of resurgent current amplitude increases. The protein kinase C inhibitor Bisindolylmaleimide I also showed attenuating effects on resurgent currents, although to a lesser extent compared to extracellular signal-regulated kinases inhibition. These results indicate a critical role of extracellular signal-regulated kinases signaling in modulating resurgent currents and membrane excitability in dorsal root ganglion neurons treated with inflammatory mediators. It is also suggested that targeting extracellular signal-regulated kinases-resurgent currents might be a useful strategy to reduce inflammatory pain

Search for excited charmonium states in e+eβˆ’e^+e^- Annihilation at s=10.6\sqrt{s}=10.6 GeV

We suggest searching for excited charmonium states in e+eβˆ’e^+e^- annihilation via double charmonium production at s=10.6\sqrt{s}=10.6 GeV with BB factories, based on a more complete leading order calculation including both QCD and QED contributions for various processes. In particular, for the C=+ states, the Ο‡c0(nP)\chi_{c0}(nP) (n=2,3) and Ξ·c(mS)\eta_c(mS) (m=3,4) may have appreciable potentials to be observed; while for the C=- states, the Ξ·chc\eta_ch_c production and especially the Ο‡c1hc\chi_{c1}h_c production might provide opportunities for observing the hch_c with higher statistics in the future. A brief discussion for the X(3940) observed in the double charmonium production is included.Comment: 13 pages and 8 figures in PRD version; QED contribution added; experimental and theoretical developments since 2004 summarized; references adde

Strong quantum fluctuation of vortices in the new superconductor MgB2MgB_2

By using transport and magnetic measurement, the upper critical field Hc2(T)H_{c2}(T) and the irreversibility line Hirr(T)H_{irr}(T) has been determined. A big separation between Hc2(0)H_{c2}(0) and Hirr(0)H_{irr}(0) has been found showing the existence of a quantum vortex liquid state induced by quantum fluctuation of vortices in the new superconductor MgB2MgB_2. Further investigation on the magnetic relaxation shows that both the quantum tunneling and the thermally activated flux creep weakly depends on temperature. But when the melting field HirrH_{irr} is approached, a drastic rising of the relaxation rate is observed. This may imply that the melting of the vortex matter at a finite temperature is also induced by the quantum fluctuation of vortices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Theoretical evidence for the superluminality of evanescent modes

Though both theoretical and experimental investigations have revealed the superluminal behavior of evanescent electromagnetic waves, there are many disputes about the physical meaning and validity of such superluminal phenomenon, which is due to the fact that the traditional investigations are based on the theory of tunneling time, and concerned with the problem of what the group velocity of evanescent waves means. In this paper, by studying the quantum probability amplitude for photons to propagate over a spacelike interval along an undersized waveguide, we present theoretical evidence for such superluminality

Magneto-optical properties of Co/ZnO multilayer films

Multilayer films of ZnO with Co were deposited on glass substrates then annealed in a vacuum. The magnetisation of the films increased with annealing but not the magnitude of the magneto-optical signals. The dielectric functions for the films were calculated using the MCD spectra. A Maxwell Garnett theory of a metallic Co/ZnO mixture is presented. The extent to which this explains the MCD spectra taken on the films is discussed.Comment: This paper was presented at ICM (2009) and is accepted in this form for the proceeding

Average and instantaneous velocities of energy of evanescent modes

Many theoretical and experimental investigations have presented a conclusion that evanescent electromagnetic modes can superluminally propagate. However, in this paper, we show that the average energy velocity of evanescent modes inside a cut-off waveguide is always less than or equal to the velocity of light in vacuum, while the instantaneous energy velocity can be superluminal, which does not violate causality according to quantum field theory: the fact that a particle can propagate over a space-like interval does preserve causality provided that here a measurement performed at one point cannot affect another measurement at a point separated from the first with a space-like interval.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Physical Review

Protein kinase C enhances human sodium channel hNav1.7 resurgent currents via a serine residue in the domain III-IV linker

Resurgent sodium currents likely play a role in modulating neuronal excitability. Here we studied whether protein kinase C (PKC) activation can increase resurgent currents produced by the human sodium channel hNav1.7. We found that a PKC agonist significantly enhanced hNav1.7-mediated resurgent currents and this was prevented by PKC antagonists. The enhancing effects were replicated by two phosphorylation-mimicking mutations and were prevented by a phosphorylation-deficient mutation at a conserved PKC phosphorylation site (Serine 1479). Our results suggest that PKC can increase sodium resurgent currents through phosphorylation of a conserved Serine residue located in the domain III-IV linker of sodium channels
