How Well Do Large Language Models Understand Syntax? An Evaluation by Asking Natural Language Questions

While recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) bring us closer to achieving artificial general intelligence, the question persists: Do LLMs truly understand language, or do they merely mimic comprehension through pattern recognition? This study seeks to explore this question through the lens of syntax, a crucial component of sentence comprehension. Adopting a natural language question-answering (Q&A) scheme, we craft questions targeting nine syntactic knowledge points that are most closely related to sentence comprehension. Experiments conducted on 24 LLMs suggest that most have a limited grasp of syntactic knowledge, exhibiting notable discrepancies across different syntactic knowledge points. In particular, questions involving prepositional phrase attachment pose the greatest challenge, whereas those concerning adjectival modifier and indirect object are relatively easier for LLMs to handle. Furthermore, a case study on the training dynamics of the LLMs reveals that the majority of syntactic knowledge is learned during the initial stages of training, hinting that simply increasing the number of training tokens may not be the `silver bullet' for improving the comprehension ability of LLMs.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure

Bisphenol-A is an important environmental contaminant due to the increased early-life exposure that may pose significant health-risks to various organisms including humans. This study aimed to use zebrafish as a toxicogenomic model to capture transcriptomic and phenotypic changes for inference of signaling pathways, biological processes, physiological systems and identify potential biomarker genes that are affected by early-life exposure to bisphenol-A. Phenotypic analysis using wild-type zebrafish larvae revealed BPA early-life exposure toxicity caused cardiac edema, cranio-facial abnormality, failure of swimbladder inflation and poor tactile response. Fluorescent imaging analysis using three transgenic lines revealed suppressed neuron branching from the spinal cord, abnormal development of neuromast cells, and suppressed vascularization in the abdominal region. Using knowledge-based data mining algorithms, transcriptome analysis suggests that several signaling pathways involving ephrin receptor, clathrin-mediated endocytosis, synaptic long-term potentiation, axonal guidance, vascular endothelial growth factor, integrin and tight junction were deregulated. Physiological systems with related disorders associated with the nervous, cardiovascular, skeletal-muscular, blood and reproductive systems were implicated, hence corroborated with the phenotypic analysis. Further analysis identified a common set of BPA-targeted genes and revealed a plausible mechanism involving disruption of endocrine-regulated genes and processes in known susceptible tissue-organs. The expression of 28 genes were validated in a separate experiment using quantitative real-time PCR and 6 genes, ncl1, apoeb, mdm1, mycl1b, sp4, U1SNRNPBP homolog, were found to be sensitive and robust biomarkers for BPA early-life exposure toxicity. The susceptibility of sp4 to BPA perturbation suggests its role in altering brain development, function and subsequently behavior observed in laboratory animals exposed to BPA during early life, which is a health-risk concern of early life exposure in humans. The present study further established zebrafish as a model for toxicogenomic inference of early-life chemical exposure toxicity

    No full text
Background: Exposure to artificial or natural endocrine disruptors, such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phytoestrogens has been demonstrated to have health effects, especially in children. Biomonitoring of BPA and phytoestrogens in human urine can be used to assess the intake levels of these compounds. Methods: In this study, BPA and phytoestrogens in urine specimens (n = 256) collected from children in China were measured by liquid chromatography (LC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Results: BPA was detected in most specimens, with a geometric mean concentration of 1.58 ng/mL. For the first time, levels of urinary phytoestrogens in Chinese children were reported. Daidzein and enterolactone are the typical isoflavones and lignans compounds in urine, respectively. Conclusions: Relatively high levels of urinary BPA indicate an increasing risk of BPA exposure to Chinese children. Urinary concentrations of daidzein in Chinese children are higher when compared with those reported in the U.S. children, while concentrations of urinary enterolactone and enterodiols are significantly lower. This suggests a significant difference in phytoestrogen intake between the children from China and from the U.S

Non-uniform heat transfer suppression to enhance PCM melting by angled fins

We present numerical investigations on a thermal energy storage system with phase change materials (PCMs) vertically heated from one side of a rectangular enclosure. A transient numerical model is developed to study the heat transfer and melting behaviors, and the natural convection is accounted. To suppress the non-uniform heat transfer for the PCM melting enhancement, fins with the inclined angle of 0°,+15°,+30°,-15° and -30° are proposed. The melt fraction contours with the natural convection driven flow are performed and compared, as well as the temperature distributions. Results show that the fins in a downward angle of -15° accelerate the PCM melting faster than the others, as the part of heat is well transferred to the bottom of container along the fins and the original non-uniform melting caused by natural convection is reduced. Contrarily, the upward fins in +15° and +30° deepen the non-uniform heat distribution and slow down the melting. The saved PCM melting time is defined on the basis of the No Fin PCM case. It is found that saved melting time of PCMs with -15° fins increases 23.8% on the case of the 0° fins, while decreases 45.2% and 71.4% with the +15° and +30° fins. The fin length and heat flux input are also examined for the PCM melting. The fin length shows the significant influence on the PCM melting with the tilted fins. As the length ratio of fin to container increases to 0.75, the non-uniform melting is obviously suppressed due to the addition of the -15° fins, and temperature contours inside the PCM domain show much more uniform, by comparing with 0° fins. The PCM melting rate with -15° fins also increases greatly and the saved melting time rises about 62.7%. Besides, the enhancement ratio reveals that the melting enhancement by the fins mainly appears at the second half of the entire process, based on the PCM solid-liquid interface formed at the first half.NRF (Natl Research Foundation, S’pore

Abstract Background The development of new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a clinical complication that requires a better understanding of the causative risk factors. This study aimed to explore the risk factors and the expression and function of miR-1 and miR-133a in new atrial fibrillation after AMI. Methods We collected clinical data from 172 patients with AMI treated with emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between October 2021 and October 2022. Independent predictors of NOAF were determined using binary logistic univariate and multivariate regression analyses. The predictive value of NOAF was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for related risk factors. In total, 172 venous blood samples were collected preoperatively and on the first day postoperatively; the expression levels of miR-1 and miR-133a were determined using the polymerase chain reaction. The clinical significance of miR-1 and miR-133a expression levels was determined by Spearman correlation analysis. Results The Glasgow prognostic score, left atrial diameter, and infarct area were significant independent risk factors for NOAF after AMI. We observed that the expression levels of miR-1 and miR-133a were significantly higher in the NOAF group than in the non-NOAF group. On postoperative day 1, strong associations were found between miR-133a expression levels and the neutrophil ratio and between miR-1 expression levels and an increased left atrial diameter. Conclusions Our findings indicate that the mechanism of NOAF after AMI may include an inflammatory response associated with an increased miR-1-related mechanism. Conversely, miR-133a could play a protective role in this clinical condition

Large Methane Emission from the River Inlet Region of Eutrophic Lake: A Case Study of Lake Taihu

    No full text
Lakes are important natural sources of atmospheric methane (CH4), which should be considered in global CH4 budget estimations. However, the CH4 emissions from lakes can be highly variable, and the emissions from the river inlet region were less studied, which seriously hamper our understanding of CH4 budget estimates of lakes. Here, field measurements from over six years (2012 to 2017) at Lake Taihu, a large eutrophic shallow lake with a complicated river network, were conducted to address the issue. Results show that the river inlet region of the lake was a hot spot of CH4 emission. The CH4 emission at the river inlet region with an annual mean value of 0.183 mmol m−2 d−1 was seven times higher than that at pelagic region (0.028 mmol m−2 d−1). Peak CH4 emission occurred in warm seasons, and the lowest in cold seasons at the pelagic region, but peak emission occurred in cold seasons at the river inlet region. The seasonal CH4 emission at the pelagic region can be explained by water temperature; however, less temperature dependency of CH4 emission at the river inlet region was found. The variability of CH4 emission was linked to pollution loadings, and CH4-rich water in the inflowing river likely sustained the large CH4 emission of river inlet region

Separation of Sr, Nd, and U from Geological Samples Using Tandem Resin Column

BACKGROUND Uranium-series nuclides are one of the three major radioactive decay systems, which are suitable for studying various geological processes at different time scales. In addition, 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd isotopes (Sr-Nd isotopes for short) are two commonly used isotopes, for rock dating, chemical weathering assessment and tracing sediment sources. In this case, the combination of Sr-Nd-U isotopes can provide more comprehensively knowledge of the element cycle on the earth's surface and deepen our understanding of the sediment "Source to Sink"processes. Most previous studies involving the Sr-Nd-U isotopes have been established by separating Sr-Nd and U isotopes respectively. In this way, the digestion operation must be performed twice, one for separating Sr-Nd and the other for separating U. Alternatively, if only one sample is digested for measuring all three isotopes, between each element separation, the residue must be dried and dissolved in another solution so as to start a new column work. The former increases the amount of samples, which is not conducive to analysis of precious and trace samples; the latter adds additional drying operation, which is time consuming and increases the risk of sample loss and contamination. OBJECTIVES To establish a new Sr-Nd-U combined separation scheme. In this method, only one sample is dissolved, avoiding solution transfer between each separation, so as to reduce sample amount and improve the efficiency of separation and purification of Sr-Nd-U isotopes. METHODS A new chromatographic scheme of separating Sr-Nd-U with one sample digestion using a tandem column scheme is presented. Three columns were overlain sequentially to separate Sr in Sr Spec column, Nd in AG50W-X8 column and U in UTEVA column. 3mol/L HNO3 was used to pre-condition, load the sample, and rinse the matrix. After rinsing the matrix, the tandem column was separated to 3 independent columns to elute the target elements (Sr, Nd, U) respectively. As the connection sequence of different resin columns may interfere with the recovery of target elements, two different chromatographic schemes were compared. In Scheme 1, U column was placed on top of Sr column, while in Scheme 2 the positions of U column and Sr resin column were exchanged. In both schemes, the AG50W-X8 resin column was set at the bottom as the cationic resin can adsorb the most complex elements. All separated elution was tested for element concentration using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The basalt standard sample (BCR-2) was used to examine the behavior and recovery of each element in the separation procedure. RESULTS A total of 10 fractions were recovered from the tandem column scheme, among which fraction 1 represented the leachate recovered by loading samples and rinsing matrix from the tandem three columns. Fraction 2, 5 and 8 represented the leachate recovered by Sr Spec resin, AG50W-X8 resin and UTEVA resin respectively rinsing matrix after separation of the three columns. Fraction 3, 6 and 9 represented the leachate recovered by Sr, REE and U columns, which was Sr, Nd and U collection. Fraction 4, 7 and 10 represented the leachate from each resin recycle stage. In either Scheme 1 or Scheme 2, most matrix elements (high content of K, Ca, Na, Mg, Al, Fe, Ti and P and low content of Rb, Hf and Th) were mainly concentrated in fraction 1. The elution rate of Na, Ti, Rb and Hf was up to 99%. The elution rate of K and Ca was slightly lower at about 85% and the elution rate of Fe was about 56%. Sr was mainly concentrated in fraction 3, which contained only a small amount of P and Ba. Nd was mainly concentrated in fraction 6, which also contained both Sm and Ce. U was mainly concentrated in fraction 9, which only contained a very small amount of P and Pb. The column recovery was almost 99.9% for U, 90% for Sr and over 80% for Nd.The removal rate of major matrix elements (K, Ca, Na, Ba, Fe, Rb, etc.) exceeded 99%, which reduced interference with high-precision isotope analysis of Sr, Nd, and U. The recovery and purity of Sr, Nd, U were all quite high. A very small amount of P and Ba in fraction 3 had no interference with Sr isotopes (87Sr/86Sr). The Rb which was isomorphism of Sr was removed completely. With regard to Sm and Ce in fraction 6, previous studies had shown that 142Ce could not interfere with Nd isotope (143Nd/144Nd), and Sm could be further separated by Ln resin, so as not to affect Nd isotopic test. Fraction 9 contained nearly 100% U with no other elements. The sequence of resin column splicing is a crucial consideration which may impact the element separation. Hence, the position of Sr Spec column and UTEVA column was exchanged to compare the influence of different column sequences on eluting target elements. Both Scheme 1 and Scheme 2 can effectively wash off most of the matrix elements, and the target elements Sr, Nd and U can be efficiently adsorbed on the resin. There is no significant difference on target element separation between the two different column sequences. This indicates that Sr Spec and UTEVA resins do not interfere with each other on the target elements. CONCLUSIONS The new chromatographic scheme of separating Sr-Nd-U with one sample digestion using a tandem column scheme can be used to quickly and efficiently separate Sr, Nd and U elements from silicate rock samples. The recovery rate for U, Sr and Nd is 99.9%, 92.5% and 82.1%, respectively, which meet the requirements of subsequent isotope analysis. This Sr-Nd-U combined separation method can be used to reduce the sample consumption by about 50%, which is beneficial to the analysis of precious and trace samples. Meanwhile, as no solution transfer is needed between each column separation, this method can also save time for column work and increase the efficiency of chemical separation. A new idea for Sr-Nd-U multi-isotope separation is provided. If the recovery of Pb in the fraction 4 of this chromatographic scheme can be improved in further studies, the application of this new method may be expanded to more fields in the future
