Consumer Purchasing Behavior in Response to Media Coverage of Avian Influenza

Magneto-transport in impurity-doped few-layer graphene spin valve
Using Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function method we study the
spin-dependent transport through impurity-doped few layer graphene sandwiched
between two magnetic leads with an arbitrary mutual orientations of the
magnetizations. We find for parallel electrodes magnetizations that the
differential conductance possesses two resonant peaks as the applied bias
increases. These peaks are traced back to a buildup of a magnetic moment on the
impurity due to the electrodes spin polarization. For a large mutual angle of
the electrodes magnetization directions, the two resonant peaks approach each
others and merge into a single peak for antiparallel orientation of the
electrodes magnetizations. We point out that the tunneling magnetoresistance
(TMR) may change sign for relatively small changes in the values of the
polarization parameters. Furthermore, we inspect the behaviour of the

On the Sojourn Time Distribution in a Finite Population Markovian Processor Sharing Queue
We consider a finite population processor-sharing (PS) queue, with Markovian
arrivals and an exponential server. Such a queue can model an interactive
computer system consisting of a bank of terminals in series with a central
processing unit (CPU). For systems with a large population and a
commensurately rapid service rate, or infrequent arrivals, we obtain various
asymptotic results. We analyze the conditional sojourn time distribution of a
tagged customer, conditioned on the number of others in the system at the
tagged customer's arrival instant, and also the unconditional distribution. The
asymptotics are obtained by a combination of singular perturbation methods and
spectral methods. We consider several space/time scales and parameter ranges,
which lead to different asymptotic behaviors. We also identify precisely when
the finite population model can be approximated by the standard infinite

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the local density of topological surface states
We study Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the local density of states
(LDOS) for topological insulator (TI) and conventional metal Au(111) surfaces
with spin-orbit interaction, which can be probed by spin-polarized scanning
tunneling microscopy. We show that the spacial AB oscillatory period in the
total LDOS is a flux quantum (weak localization) in
both systems. Remarkably, an analogous weak antilocalization with
periodic spacial AB oscillations in spin components of LDOS for TI surface is
observed, while it is absent in Au(111).Comment: 4 APL pages, 3 figure

In order to reduce obesity and associated costs, policymakers are considering various policies, including taxes, to change consumers’ high-calorie consumption habits. We investigate two tax policies aimed at reducing added sweetener consumption. Both a consumption tax on sweet goods and a sweetener input tax can reach the same policy target of reducing added sweetener consumption. Both tax instruments are regressive, but the associated surplus losses are limited. The tax on sweetener inputs targets sweeteners directly and causes about five times less surplus loss than the final consumption tax.
