Research on A Novel Reliable MEMS Bistable Solid State Switch
As a result of the unpredictable nature of extreme environments (including temperature, humidity, impact, and other factors), micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) solid-state fuze control modules have an urgent requirement for a MEMS solid-state switch (MEMS-S3). In particular, this switch must remain stable without any energy input after a state transition (i.e., it must be bistable). In this paper, a MEMS bistable solid-state switch (MEMS-bS3) is designed that is based on the concept of producing a micro-explosion. The reliable state switching of the MEMS-bS3 is studied via heat conduction theory and verified via both simulations and experimental methods. The experimental results show that these switches can produce micro-explosions driven by 33 V/47 μF pulse energy. However, the metal film bridge (MFB) structures used in this switch with smaller dimensions (80×20 μm2, 90×30 μm2, and 100×40 μm2) could not enable the switch to realize a reliable state transition, and the state transition rate was less than 40%. When the MFB dimensions reached 120×60 μm2 or 130×70 μm2, the state transition rate exceeded 80%, and the response time was on the μs-scale
Surface Heat Budgets and Sea Surface Temperature in the Pacific Warm Pool During TOGA COARE
The daily mean heat and momentum fluxes at the surface derived from the SSM/I and Japan's GMS radiance measurements are used to study the temporal and spatial variability of the surface energy budgets and their relationship to the sea surface temperature during the COARE intensive observing period (IOP). For the three time legs observed during the IOP, the retrieved surface fluxes compare reasonably well with those from the IMET buoy, RV Moana Wave, and RV Wecoma. The characteristics of surface heat and momentum fluxes are very different between the southern and northern warm pool. In the southern warm pool, the net surface heat flux is dominated by solar radiation which is, in turn, modulated by the two Madden-Julian oscillations. The surface winds are generally weak, leading to a shallow ocean mixed layer. The solar radiation penetrating through the bottom of the mixed layer is significant, and the change in the sea surface temperature during the IOP does not follow the net surface heat flux. In the northern warm pool, the northeasterly trade wind is strong and undergoes strong seasonal variation. The variation of the net surface heat flux is dominated by evaporation. The two westerly wind bursts associated with the Madden-Julian oscillations seem to have little effect on the net surface heat flux. The ocean mixed layer is deep, and the solar radiation penetrating through the bottom of the mixed layer is small. As opposed to the southern warm pool, the trend of the sea surface temperature in the northern warm pool during the IOP is in agreement with the variation of the net heat flux at the surface
Preparation and evaluation of ofloxacin-loaded palmitic acid solid lipid nanoparticles
The purpose of this study was to use solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) to improve the pharmacological activity of ofloxacin. Ofloxacin-loaded SLN were prepared using palmitic acid as lipid matrix and poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) as emulsifier by a hot homogenization and ultrasonication method. The physicochemical characteristics of SLN were investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy, and photon correlation spectroscopy. Pharmacokinetics was studied after oral administration in mice. In vitro antibacterial activity and in vivo antibacterial efficacy of the SLN were investigated using minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and a mouse protection model. The results demonstrated that the encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity, diameter, polydispersivity index, and zeta potential of the nanoparticles were 41.36% ± 1.50%, 4.40% ± 0.16%, 156.33 ± 7.51 nm, 0.26 ± 0.04, and −22.70 ± 1.40 mv, respectively. The SLN showed sustained release and enhanced antibacterial activity in vitro. Pharmacokinetic results demonstrated that SLN increased the bioavailability of ofloxacin by 2.27-fold, and extended the mean residence time of the drug from 10.50 to 43.44 hours. Single oral administrations of ofloxacin-loaded nanoparticles at 3 drug doses, 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, and 20 mg/kg, all produced higher survival rates of lethal infected mice compared with native ofloxacin. These results indicate that SLN might be a promising delivery system to enhance the pharmacological activity of ofloxacin
Variable pitch approach for performance improving of straight-bladed VAWT at rated tip speed ratio
This paper presents a new variable pitch (VP) approach to increase the peak power coefficient of the straight-bladed vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT), by widening the azimuthal angle band of the blade with the highest aerodynamic torque, instead of increasing the highest torque. The new VP-approach provides a curve of pitch angle designed for the blade operating at the rated tip speed ratio (TSR) corresponding to the peak power coefficient of the fixed pitch (FP)-VAWT. The effects of the new approach are exploited by using the double multiple stream tubes (DMST) model and Prandtl’s mathematics to evaluate the blade tip loss. The research describes the effects from six aspects, including the lift, drag, angle of attack (AoA), resultant velocity, torque, and power output, through a comparison between VP-VAWTs and FP-VAWTs working at four TSRs: 4, 4.5, 5, and 5.5. Compared with the FP-blade, the VP-blade has a wider azimuthal zone with the maximum AoA, lift, drag, and torque in the upwind half-cycle, and yields the two new larger maximum values in the downwind half-cycle. The power distribution in the swept area of the turbine changes from an arched shape of the FP-VAWT into the rectangular shape of the VP-VAWT. The new VP-approach markedly widens the highest-performance zone of the blade in a revolution, and ultimately achieves an 18.9% growth of the peak power coefficient of the VAWT at the optimum TSR. Besides achieving this growth, the new pitching method will enhance the performance at TSRs that are higher than current optimal values, and an increase of torque is also generated
Cadmium and Secondary Structure-dependent Function of a Degron in the Pca1p Cadmium Exporter
Protein turnover is a critical cellular process regulating biochemical pathways and destroying terminally misfolded or damaged proteins. Pca1p, a cadmium exporter in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is rapidly degraded by the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) system via a cis-acting degron that exists at the 250–350 amino acid region of Pca1p and is transferable to other proteins to serve as a degradation signal. Cadmium stabilizes Pca1p in a manner dependent on the degron. This suggested that cadmium-mediated masking of the degron impedes its interaction with the molecular factors involved in the ERAD. The characteristics and mechanisms of action of the degron in Pca1p and most of those in other proteins however remain to be determined. The results presented here indicate that specific cysteine residues in a degron of Pca1p sense cadmium.Anunbiased approach selecting non-functional degrons indicated a critical role of hydrophobic amino acids in the degron for its function.Asecondary structure modeling predicted the formation of an amphipathic helix. Site-directed mutagenesis confirmed the functional significance of the hydrophobic patch. Last, hydrophobic amino acids in the degron- and cadmium-binding region affected the interaction of Pca1p with the Ssa1p molecular chaperone, which is involved in ERAD. These results reveal the mechanism of action of the degron, which might be useful for the identification and characterization of other degrons
Behavioral Responses of Apis mellifera Adult Workers to Odors from Healthy Brood and Diseased Brood
Studies of adult workers’ responses to infected brood were undertaken to isolate discrete volatile compounds that elicited honeybee hygienic behavior. Using a freeze-killed brood assay, we determined that in healthy colonies adult workers recognized and emptied infected cells with a 95% clearance rate. SPME-GC-MS results emptied >95% infected cells indicated differences in the composition and relative content of volatile compounds released by healthy and diseased brood. Additionally, we determined that the main volatile compound released from the pathogen Ascosphaera apis was phenethyl alcohol. The Y-tube olfactometer indicated that 10- to 20-day-old workers of healthy colonies, but only 15-day-old workers of diseased colonies, were significantly sensitive to differences in characteristic volatile compounds. This information could facilitate honey bee selection based on mechanisms that contribute to chalkbrood disease tolerance
A tree species classification model based on improved YOLOv7 for shelterbelts
Tree species classification within shelterbelts is crucial for shelterbelt management. The large-scale satellite-based and low-altitude drone-based approaches serve as powerful tools for forest monitoring, especially in tree species classification. However, these methods face challenges in distinguishing individual tree species within complex backgrounds. Additionally, the mixed growth of trees within protective forest suffers from similar crown size among different tree species. The complex background of the shelterbelts negatively impacts the accuracy of tree species classification. The You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm is widely used in the field of agriculture and forestry, ie., plant and fruit identification, pest and disease detection, and tree species classification in forestry. We proposed a YOLOv7-Kmeans++_CoordConv_CBAM (YOLOv7-KCC) model for tree species classification based on drone RGB remote sensing images. Firstly, we constructed a dataset for tree species in shelterbelts and adopted data augmentation methods to mitigate overfitting due to limited training data. Secondly, the K-means++ algorithm was employed to cluster anchor boxes in the dataset. Furthermore, to enhance the YOLOv7 backbone network’s Efficient Layer Aggregation Network (ELAN) module, we used Coordinate Convolution (CoordConv) replaced the ordinary 1×1 convolution. The Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) was integrated into the Path Aggregation Network (PANet) structure to facilitate multiscale feature extraction and fusion, allowing the network to better capture and utilize crucial feature information. Experimental results showed that the YOLOv7-KCC model achieves a mean average [email protected] of 98.91%, outperforming the Faster RCNN-VGG16, Faster RCNN-Resnet50, SSD, YOLOv4, and YOLOv7 models by 5.71%, 11.75%, 5.97%, 7.86%, and 3.69%, respectively. The GFlops and Parameter values of the YOLOv7-KCC model stand at 105.07G and 143.7MB, representing an almost 5.6% increase in F1 metrics compared to YOLOv7. Therefore, the proposed YOLOv7-KCC model can effectively classify shelterbelt tree species, providing a scientific theoretical basis for shelterbelt management in Northwest China focusing on Xinjiang
