Experimentally Engineering the Edge Termination of Graphene Nanoribbons
The edges of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have attracted much interest due to
their potentially strong influence on GNR electronic and magnetic properties.
Here we report the ability to engineer the microscopic edge termination of high
quality GNRs via hydrogen plasma etching. Using a combination of
high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles
calculations, we have determined the exact atomic structure of plasma-etched
GNR edges and established the chemical nature of terminating functional groups
for zigzag, armchair and chiral edge orientations. We find that the edges of
hydrogen-plasma-etched GNRs are generally flat, free of structural
reconstructions and are terminated by hydrogen atoms with no rehybridization of
the outermost carbon edge atoms. Both zigzag and chiral edges show the presence

Imaging of granular sources in high energy heavy ion collisions
We investigate the source imaging for a granular pion-emitting source model
in high energy heavy ion collisions. The two-pion source functions of the
granular sources exhibit a two-tiered structure. Using a parametrized formula
of granular two-pion source function, we examine the two-tiered structure of
the source functions for the imaging data of Au+Au collisions at Alternating
Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We find
that the imaging technique introduced by Brown and Danielewicz is suitable for
probing the granular structure of the sources. Our data-fitting results
indicate that there is not visible granularity for the sources at AGS energies.
However, the data for the RHIC collisions with the selections of and GeV/c are better described by the
model with granular emission than that of one Gaussian. The model with granular
source has more parameters than the simple Gaussian, hence can describe more

Combining Multi-Sequence and Synthetic Images for Improved Segmentation of Late Gadolinium Enhancement Cardiac MRI

Accurate segmentation of the cardiac boundaries in late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance images (LGE-MRI) is a fundamental step for accurate quantification of scar tissue. However, while there are many solutions for automatic cardiac segmentation of cine images, the presence of scar tissue can make the correct delineation of the myocardium in LGE-MRI challenging even for human experts. As part of the Multi-Sequence Cardiac MR Segmentation Challenge, we propose a solution for LGE-MRI segmentation based on two components. First, a generative adversarial network is trained for the task of modality-to-modality translation between cine and LGE-MRI sequences to obtain extra synthetic images for both modalities. Second, a deep learning model is trained for segmentation with different combinations of original, augmented and synthetic sequences. Our results based on three magnetic resonance sequences (LGE, bSSFP and T2) from 45 different patients show that the multi-sequence model training integrating synthetic images and data augmentation improves in the segmentation over conventional training with real datasets. In conclusion, the accuracy of the segmentation of LGE-MRI images can be improved by using complementary information provided by non-contrast MRI sequences
Energy Level Statistics of the U(5) and O(6) Symmetries in the Interacting Boson Model
We study the energy level statistics of the states in U(5) and O(6) dynamical
symmetries of the interacting boson model and the high spin states with
backbending in U(5) symmetry. In the calculations, the degeneracy resulting
from the additional quantum number is eliminated manually. The calculated
results indicate that the finite boson number effect is prominent. When
has a value close to a realistic one, increasing the interaction strength of
subgroup O(5) makes the statistics vary from Poisson-type to GOE-type and
further recover to Poisson-type. However, in the case of , they
all tend to be Poisson-type. The fluctuation property of the energy levels with
backbending in high spin states in U(5) symmetry involves a signal of shape

A Contribution by Ice Nuclei to Global Warming
Ice nuclei (IN) significantly affect clouds via supercooled droplets, that in turn modulate atmospheric radiation and thus climate change. Since the IN effect is relatively strong in stratiform clouds but weak in convective ones, the overall effect depends on the ratio of stratiform to convective cloud amount. In this paper, 10 years of TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) satellite data are analyzed to confirm that stratiform precipitation fraction increases with increasing latitude, which implies that the IN effect is stronger at higher latitudes. To quantitatively evaluate the IN effect versus latitude, large-scale forcing data from ten field campaigns are used to drive a CRM (cloud-resolving model) to generate longterm cloud simulations. As revealed in the simulations, the increase in the net downward radiative flux at the TOA (top of the atmosphere) from doubling the current IN concentrations is larger at higher latitude, which is attributed to the meridional tendency in the stratiform precipitation fraction. Surface warming from doubling the IN concentrations, based on the radiative balance of the globe, is compared with that from anthropogenic COZ . It is found that the former effect is stronger than the latter in middle and high latitudes but not in the Tropics. With regard to the impact of IN on global warming, there are two factors to consider: the radiative effect from increasing the IN concentration and the increase in IN concentration itself. The former relies on cloud ensembles and thus varies mainly with latitude. In contrast, the latter relies on IN sources (e.g., the land surface distribution) and thus varies not only with latitude but also longitude. Global desertification and industrialization provide clues on the geographic variation of the increase in IN concentration since pre-industrial times. Thus, their effect on global warming can be inferred and then be compared with observations. A general match in geographic and seasonal variations between the inferred and observed warming suggests that IN may have contributed positively to global warming over the past decades, especially in middle and high latitudes
Tag-Aware Recommender Systems: A State-of-the-art Survey
In the past decade, Social Tagging Systems have attracted increasing
attention from both physical and computer science communities. Besides the
underlying structure and dynamics of tagging systems, many efforts have been
addressed to unify tagging information to reveal user behaviors and
preferences, extract the latent semantic relations among items, make
recommendations, and so on. Specifically, this article summarizes recent
progress about tag-aware recommender systems, emphasizing on the contributions
from three mainstream perspectives and approaches: network-based methods,
tensor-based methods, and the topic-based methods. Finally, we outline some
other tag-related works and future challenges of tag-aware recommendation

Identification of plastic constitutive parameters at large deformations from three dimensional displacement fields
The aim of this paper is to provide a general procedure to extract the constitutive parameters of a plasticity model starting from displacement measurements and using the Virtual Fields Method. This is a classical inverse problem which has been already investigated in the literature, however several new features are developed here. First of all the procedure applies to a general three-dimensional displacement field which leads to large plastic deformations, no assumptions are made such as plane stress or plane strain although only pressure-independent plasticity is considered. Moreover the equilibrium equation is written in terms of the deviatoric stress tensor that can be directly computed from the strain field without iterations. Thanks to this, the identification routine is much faster compared to other inverse methods such as finite element updating. The proposed method can be a valid tool to study complex phenomena which involve severe plastic deformation and where the state of stress is completely triaxial, e.g. strain localization or necking occurrence. The procedure has been validated using a three dimensional displacement field obtained from a simulated experiment. Predictors of HIV and Syphilis among Men Who Have Sex with Men in a Chinese Metropolitan City: Comparison of Risks among Students and Non-Students
Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at a substantial risk of HIV, given rising HIV prevalence in urban China. Adolescent and adult students often take HIV-related risk as part of sexual exploration. We compared the risks of HIV and syphilis infections and risky sexual behaviors between student and non-student among urban MSM.Respondent driven sampling approach was used to recruit men who were self-identified as MSM in Chongqing Metropolitan City in southwestern China in 2009. Each participant completed a computer-assisted self-interview which collected demographic and behavioral data, and provided blood specimens for HIV and syphilis testing. Multivariable logistic regression analyses identified predictors for HIV and syphilis infections while comparing student and non-student MSM.Among 503 MSM participants, 36.4% were students, of whom 84.2% were in college. The adjusted prevalence of HIV infection was 5.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.1%-10.2%) in students and 20.9% (95% CI: 13.7%-27.5%) in non-students; the adjusted prevalence of syphilis was 4.4% (95% CI: 0.7%-9.0%) in students and 7.9% (95% CI: 3.6%-12.9%) in non-students (P = 0.12). Two groups had similar risky sexual behaviors such as number of sexual partners and exchanging sex for money. Multivariate analysis showed that students had lower HIV prevalence than non-students (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.3; 95% CI: 0.1-0.8) adjusting for age, ethnicity and other variables.Student MSM have lower HIV and similar syphilis prevalence compared with non-student MSM. However, due to a shorter duration of sexual experience and high prevalence of at-risk sexual behaviors among student MSM, HIV risk might be quite high in students as in non-students
Localisation of RNAs into the germ plasm of vitellogenic xenopus oocytes
We have studied the localisation of mRNAs in full-grown Xenopus laevis oocytes by injecting fluorescent RNAs, followed by confocal microscopy of the oocyte cortex. Concentrating on RNA encoding the Xenopus Nanos homologue, nanos1 (formerly Xcat2), we find that it consistently localised into aggregated germ plasm ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles, independently of cytoskeletal integrity. This implies that a diffusion/entrapment-mediated mechanism is active, as previously reported for previtellogenic oocytes. Sometimes this was accompanied by localisation into scattered particles of the “late”, Vg1/VegT pathway; occasionally only late pathway localisation was seen. The Xpat RNA behaved in an identical fashion and for neither RNA was the localisation changed by any culture conditions tested. The identity of the labelled RNP aggregates as definitive germ plasm was confirmed by their inclusion of abundant mitochondria and co-localisation with the germ plasm protein Hermes. Further, the nanos1/Hermes RNP particles are interspersed with those containing the germ plasm protein Xpat. These aggregates may be followed into the germ plasm of unfertilized eggs, but with a notable reduction in its quantity, both in terms of injected molecules and endogenous structures. Our results conflict with previous reports that there is no RNA localisation in large oocytes, and that during mid-oogenesis even germ plasm RNAs localise exclusively by the late pathway. We find that in mid oogenesis nanos1 RNA also localises to germ plasm but also by the late pathway. Late pathway RNAs, Vg1 and VegT, also may localise into germ plasm. Our results support the view that mechanistically the two modes of localisation are extremely similar, and that in an injection experiment RNAs might utilise either pathway, the distinction in fates being very subtle and subject to variation. We discuss these results in relation to their biological significance and the results of others
Rhaponticum acaule (L) DC essential oil: chemical composition, in vitro antioxidant and enzyme inhibition properties
Background: α-glucosidase is a therapeutic target for diabetes mellitus (DM) and α-glucosidase inhibitors play a
vital role in the treatments for the disease. Furthermore, xanthine oxidase (XO) is a key enzyme that catalyzes
hypoxanthine and xanthine to uric acid which at high levels can lead to hyperuricemia which is an important cause
of gout. Pancreatic lipase (PL) secreted into the duodenum plays a key role in the digestion and absorption of fats.
For its importance in lipid digestion, PL represents an attractive target for obesity prevention.
Methods: The flowers essential oil of Rhaponticum acaule (L) DC (R. acaule) was characterized using gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antioxidant activities of R. acaule essential oil (RaEO) were also
determined using 2,2’-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), reducing power,
phosphomolybdenum, and DNA nicking assays. The inhibitory power of RaEO against α-glucosidase, xanthine
oxidase and pancreatic lipase was evaluated. Enzyme kinetic studies using Michaelis-Menten and the derived
Lineweaver-Burk (LB) plots were performed to understand the possible mechanism of inhibition exercised by the
components of this essential oil.
Results: The result revealed the presence of 26 compounds (97.4%). The main constituents include germacrene D
(49.2%), methyl eugenol (8.3%), (E)-β-ionone (6.2%), β-caryophyllene (5.7%), (E,E)-α-farnesene (4.2%),
bicyclogermacrene (4.1%) and (Z)-α-bisabolene (3.7%). The kinetic inhibition study showed that the essential oil
demonstrated a strong α-glucosidase inhibiton and it was a mixed inhibitor. On the other hand, our results
evidenced that this oil exhibited important xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect, behaving as a non-competitive
inhibitor. The essential oil inhibited the turkey pancreatic lipase, with maximum inhibition of 80% achieved at
2 mg/mL. Furthermore, the inhibition of turkey pancreatic lipase by RaEO was an irreversible one.
Conclusion: The results revealed that the RaEO is a new promising potential source of antioxidant compounds,
endowed with good practical applications for human health.
