Nodeless superconductivity in Ir1x_{1-x}Ptx_xTe2_2 with strong spin-orbital coupling

The thermal conductivity κ\kappa of superconductor Ir1x_{1-x}Ptx_{x}Te2_2 (xx = 0.05) single crystal with strong spin-orbital coupling was measured down to 50 mK. The residual linear term κ0/T\kappa_0/T is negligible in zero magnetic field. In low magnetic field, κ0/T\kappa_0/T shows a slow field dependence. These results demonstrate that the superconducting gap of Ir1x_{1-x}Ptx_{x}Te2_2 is nodeless, and the pairing symmetry is likely conventional s-wave, despite the existence of strong spin-orbital coupling and a quantum critical point.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

High incidence of plasmids in marine Vibrio species isolated from Mai Po Nature Reserve of Hong Kong

Mai Po Nature Reserve is the largest mangrove ecosystem and the most polluted coastal water body in Hong Kong. Plasmids screening of 100 Vibrio isolates randomly showed 45 % of them contained 1-3 plasmids. These plasmid(s)-bearing isolates could be divided into 12 groups based on their plasmid profiles. Phylogenetic analysis of the partial 16S rRNA gene sequences confirmed that all plasmid(s)-bearing isolates belonged to Vibrio cholerae. Full DNA sequences of the plasmids in Groups I (pVCG1.1 and pVCG1.2), II (pVCG2.1), III (pVCG3.2) and IV (pVCG4.1) have been determined and the results showed that pVCG1.1, pVCG2.1 and pVCG3.2 were almost identical. Plasmids pVCG1.1, pVCG1.2 and pVCG4.1 are comprised of 4,439, 2,357 and 2,163 bp with the overall G+C content of 45.57, 53.54 and 43.09 %, respectively. pVCG1.1 is a novel plasmid, and plasmids pVCG1.2 and pVCG4.1 showed homology of replication initiation proteins to that of the theta type replicons. Attempts to cure the plasmids from their hosts were unsuccessful. These data suggest that plasmids of Vibrio spp. are a significant gene reservoir in the marine ecosystem.published_or_final_versio

Combinatorial search of superconductivity in Fe-B composition spreads

We have fabricated Fe-B thin film composition spreads in search of possible superconducting phases following a theoretical prediction by Kolmogorov et al.^1 Co-sputtering was used to deposit spreads covering a large compositional region of the Fe-B binary phase diagram. A trace of superconducting phase was found in the nanocrystalline part of the spread, where the film undergoes a metal to insulator transition as a function of composition in a region with the average composition of FeB_2. The resistance drop occurs at 4K, and a diamagnetic signal has also been detected at the same temperature. The superconductivity is suppressible in the magnetic field up to 2 Tesla.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

In-situ electrochemical fabrication of natural contacts on single nanowires

We report a template-based in-situ electrochemical method for fabricating natural electric contacts on single nanowires using a pair of cross-patterned electrodes. Such electric contacts are highly stable upon thermal cycling between room temperature and milli-Kelvin temperatures. Direct imaging of the single-nanowire contacts using scanning electron microscopy is also demonstrated.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
