Study on the mechanical properties of a type of spherical bearing

    No full text
The spherical bearing is widely used in highways, bridges and long-span structures. In order to study mechanical properties of a large-scale spherical bearing, a full-scale finite element model of the spherical bearing was established by using ABAQUS software, and the mechanical properties of the spherical bearing under four working conditions were simulated respectively when the upper bearing plate had different inclination angles. The ultimate bearing capacity of the spherical bearing under vertical tension was analyzed emphatically. The research results show that, in practical applications, the change in bearing capacity caused by the inclination angle of the upper bearing plate should be considered, and the wedge-shaped part should be strengthened

SW: Self-Organizing Latent Lattice Models for Temporal Gene Expression Profiling

    No full text
Abstract. DNA microarrays are a high-throughput technology useful for functional genomics and gene expression analysis. While many microarray data are generated in sequence, most expression analysis tools are not utilizing the temporal information. Temporal expression profiling is important in many applications, including developmental studies, pathway analysis, and disease prognosis. In this paper, we develop a learning method designed for temporal gene expression profiling from massive DNA-microarray data. It attempts to learn probabilistic lattice maps of the gene expressions, which are then used for profiling the trajectories of temporal expressions of co-regulated genes. This self-organizing latent lattice (SOLL) model combines the topographic mapping capability of self-organizing maps and the generative property of probabilistic latent-variable models. We empirically evaluate the SOLL model on a set of cell-cycle regulation data, demonstrating its effectiveness in discovering the temporal patterns of correlated genes and its usefulness as a tool for generating and visualizing interesting hypotheses. Study on the Seismic Behavior of a Steel Plate–Concrete Composite Shear Wall with a Fishplate Connection

    No full text
The steel plate–concrete composite shear wall (SPCSW), having been widely applied to several super high-rise buildings, is currently regarded as a new type of lateral load-resisting structure. The SPCSW design does not consider the connection to the surrounding structure, normally envisaged as a buttweld connection, while the fishplate lap connection tends to be applied in construction. To explore the fishplate lap connection to achieve the performance standard of SPCSW, in this paper, an SPCSW with a fishplate connection is modeled using ABAQUS to investigate the hysteretic behavior under constant axial force and horizontal cyclic loads. Through the hysteresis curve and a load–displacement skeleton curve, the effects of fishplate thickness and lap length on its hysteretic behavior are studied. The results show that increasing the fishplate thickness contributes to a slight increase in the bearing capacity and energy dissipation and has little influence on stiffness degradation. When the fishplate thickness is more than half the steel plate thickness, the strength and energy dissipation of an SPCSW with a fishplate connection can reach the level of an SPCSW without a fishplate connection. The bearing capacity and stiffness of the SPCSW increase with the increase in lap length. When the lap length is greater than 50 mm, the strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of an SPCSW with a fishplate connection are superior to those without fishplate connections. Finally, engineering suggestions on fishplate connections are put forward

Element for Beam Dynamic Analysis Based on Analytical Deflection Trial Function

    No full text
For beam dynamic finite element analysis, according to differential equation of motion of beam with distributed mass, general analytical solution of displacement equation for the beam vibration is obtained. By applying displacement element construction principle, the general solution of displacement equation is conversed to the mode expressed by beam end displacements. And taking the mode as displacement trial function, element stiffness matrix and element mass matrix for beam flexural vibration and axial vibration are established, respectively, by applying principle of minimum potential energy. After accurate integral, explicit form of element matrix is obtained. The comparison results show that the series of relative error between the solution of analytical trial function element and theoretical solution is about 1×10-9 and the accuracy and efficiency are superior to that of interpolation trial function element. The reason is that interpolation trial function cannot accurately simulate the displacement mode of vibrating beam. The accuracy of dynamic stiffness matrix method is almost identical with that of analytical trial function. But the application of dynamic stiffness matrix method in engineering is limited. The beam dynamic element obtained in this paper is analytical and accurate and can be applied in practice

Numerical study on the dynamic response of a concrete filled steel tubular long column under axial impact by a rigid-body

    No full text
In this study, refined finite element models of concrete filled steel tubular long columns with length diameter ratio (L/D) of 50 were established, and their dynamic responses under a rigid-body impact were explored. It is found that the form of impact load is only related to and can be predicted from the impact velocity of the rigid-body. The change of axial stress and strain with time is synchronous with that of the impact load. Furthermore, the variation characteristics of axial stress and strain with time are mainly related to the initial velocity of the rigid-body

Targeting Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia-Associated Pulmonary Hypertension (BPD-PH): Potential Role of the FGF Signaling Pathway in the Development of the Pulmonary Vascular System

    No full text
More than 50 years after the first description of Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) by Northway, this chronic lung disease affecting many preterm infants is still poorly understood. Additonally, approximately 40% of preterm infants suffering from severe BPD also suffer from Bronchopulmonary dysplasia-associated pulmonary hypertension (BPD-PH), leading to a significant increase in total morbidity and mortality. Until today, there is no curative therapy for both BPD and BPD-PH available. It has become increasingly evident that growth factors are playing a central role in normal and pathologic development of the pulmonary vasculature. Thus, this review aims to summarize the recent evidence in our understanding of BPD-PH from a basic scientific point of view, focusing on the potential role of Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF)/FGF10 signaling pathway contributing to disease development, progression and resolution
