Sediment transport following water transfer from Yangtze River to Taihu Basin
AbstractTo meet the increasing need of fresh water and to improve the water quality of Taihu Lake, water transfer from the Yangtze River was initiated in 2002. This study was performed to investigate the sediment distribution along the river course following water transfer. A rainfall-runoff model was first built to calculate the runoff of the Taihu Basin in 2003. Then, the flow patterns of river networks were simulated using a one-dimensional river network hydrodynamic model. Based on the boundary conditions of the flow in tributaries of the Wangyu River and the water level in Taihu Lake, a one-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment transport numerical model of the Wangyu River was built to analyze the influences of the inflow rate of the water transfer and the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) of inflow on the sediment transport. The results show that the water transfer inflow rate and SSC of inflow have significant effects on the sediment distribution. The higher the inflow rate or SSC of inflow is, the higher the SSC value is at certain cross-sections along the river course of water transfer. Higher inflow rate and SSC of inflow contribute to higher sediment deposition per kilometer and sediment thickness. It is also concluded that a sharp decrease of the inflow velocity at the entrance of the Wangyu River on the river course of water transfer induces intense sedimentation at the cross-section near the Changshu hydro-junction. With an increasing distance from the Changshu hydro-junction, the sediment deposition and sedimentation thickness decrease gradually along the river course
A Novel Image Segmentation Algorithm Based on Graph Cut Optimization Problem
Image segmentation, a fundamental task in computer vision, has been widely used in recent years in many fields. Dealing with the graph cut optimization problem obtains the image segmentation results. In this study, a novel algorithm with weighted graphs was constructed to solve the image segmentation problem through minimization of an energy function. A binary vector of the segmentation label was defined to describe both the foreground and the background of an image. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, four various types of images were used to construct a series of experiments. Experimental results indicate that compared with other methods, the proposed algorithm can effectively promote the quality of image segmentation under three performance evaluation metrics, namely, misclassification error rate, rate of the number of background pixels, and the ratio of the number of wrongly classified foreground pixels
Observation of SQUID-like behavior in fiber laser with intra-cavity epsilon-near-zero effect
Establishing relations between fundamental effects in far-flung areas of
physics is a subject of great interest in the current research. We here report
realization of a novel photonic system akin to the radio-frequency
superconducting quantum interference device (RF-SQUID), in a fiber laser cavity
with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) nanolayers as intra-cavity components. Emulating
the RF-SQUID scheme, the photonic counterpart of the supercurrent, represented
by the optical wave, circulates in the cavity, passing through effective
optical potential barriers. Different ENZ wavelengths translate into distinct
spectral outputs through the variation of cavity resonances, emulating the
situation with a frequency-varying tank circuit in the RF-SQUID. Due to the
presence of the ENZ element, the optical potential barrier is far lower for
selected frequency components, granting them advantage in the gain-resource
competition. The findings reported in this work provide a deeper insight into
the ultrafast ENZ photonics, revealing a new path towards the design of
nanophotonic on-chip devices with various operational functions, and offer a
new approach to study superconducting and quantum-mechanical systems.Comment: to be published in Laser & Photonics Review
Cosmological Evolution of a Quintom Model of Dark Energy
We investigate in this paper the cosmological evolution of a dark energy
model with two scalar fields where one of the scalar has canonical kinetic
energy and another scalar has negative kinetic energy term. For such a system
with exponential potentials we find that during the evolution of the universe
the equation of state changes from to , which is consistent
with the recent observations. A phase-plane analysis shows that the
"phantom"-dominated scaling solution is the stable late-time attractor of this

Towards a comprehensive evaluation of ultrasound speckle reduction
Over the last three decades, several despeckling filters have been developed to reduce the speckle noise inherently present in ultrasound images without losing the diagnostic information. In this paper, a new intensity and feature preservation evaluation metric for full speckle reduction evaluation is proposed based contrast and feature similarities. A comparison of the despeckling methods is done, using quality metrics and visual interpretation of images profiles to evaluate their performance and show the benefits each one can contribute to noise reduction and feature preservation. To test the methods, noise-free images and simulated B-mode ultrasound images are used. This way, the despeckling techniques can be compared using numeric metrics, taking the noise-free image as a reference. Effectively increased efficiency for electroreduction of carbon monoxide using supported polycrystalline copper powder electrocatalysts
Many electrocatalysts can efficiently convert CO_2 to CO. However, the further conversion of CO to higher-value products was hindered by the low activity of the CO reduction reaction and the consequent lack of mechanistic insights for designing better catalysts. A flow-type reactor could potentially improve the reaction rate of CO reduction. However, the currently available configurations would pose great challenges in reaction mechanism understanding due to their complex nature and/or lack of precise potential control. Here we report, in a standard electrochemical cell with a three-electrode setup, a supported bulk polycrystalline copper powder electrode reduces CO to hydrocarbons and multicarbon oxygenates with dramatically increased activities of more than 100 mA cm^(–2) and selectivities of more than 80%. The high activity and selectivity that was achieved demonstrates the practical feasibility of electrochemical CO or CO_2 (with a tandem strategy) conversion and enables the experimental exploration of the CO reduction mechanism to further reduced products
JNK signalling in cancer: In need of new, smarter therapeutic targets

It is increasingly apparent that persistent activation of JNKs is involved in cancer development and progression. Therefore, JNKs represent attractive targets for therapeutic intervention with small molecule kinase inhibitors. However, evidence supportive of a tumour suppressor role for the JNK proteins has also been documented. Recent studies showed that the two major JNK proteins, JNK1 and JNK2, have distinct or even opposing functions in different types of cancer. As such, close consideration of which JNK proteins are beneficial targets and, more importantly, what effect small molecule inhibitors of JNKs have on physiological processes, are essential. A number of ATP-competitive and ATP-non-competitive JNK inhibitors have been developed, but have several limitations such as a lack of specificity and cellular toxicity. In this review, we summarize the accumulating evidence supporting a role for the JNK proteins in the pathogenesis of different solid and haematological malignancies, and discuss many challenges and scientific opportunities in the targeting of JNKs in cancer.Kay Kendall Leukemia Fund,
