    Sanctuary and the Cold War: The US Versus The Sanctuary Movement in Texas and Arizona 1981-1986

    In the 1980s, the Reagan Administration launched a campaign against the American Solidarity and sanctuary movements, which were highly critical of US support for right-wing dictatorships in Central America. The US sought to discredit these movements by branding their members criminals. The government used many different tactics, some legitimate and others illegal. None were successful, however, and the government was ultimately forced to leave the movements alone. This thesis examines three different hotspots in the Reagan Administration’s war against these groups. It examines the different tactics employed and analyzes their effectiveness. It also explains why the government was unsuccessful in its prosecution

    Use of donation after circulatory death donors in pediatric liver transplantation

    After advancement of technical aspects, use of well-established and novel immunosuppressive therapies, and better pre and postoperative care, which resulted in high overall survival rates with liver transplantation, waiting list mortality has become the main issue for pediatric patients with end stage liver disease. Insufficient organ donors have become a challenging issue especially in the pediatric patient population, for whom size match of donor or graft is harder to achieve. In order to expand the donor pool and decrease the gap between the demand and supply of donor organs, use of donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors have been proportionally increased. In this chapter we aim to discuss current practices, issues and outcomes with DCD in pediatric liver transplantation, as well as future strategies for improvement of results. © 202

    A new surgical technique for hepatic vein reconstruction in pediatric live donor liver transplantation

    PubMed ID: 18208439The hepatic venous reconstruction is one of the corner stones of pediatric LDLT. However, problems associated with hepatic venous outflow still remain to be an issue. In this study, we aimed at comparing two methods used in hepatic venous reconstruction. Between November 1999 and December 2006, 61 consecutive left lateral segment pediatric LDLT were performed at Ege University Organ Transplant Center, and two methods were used for hepatic venous reconstruction. In the former group (group 1: 32 patients) continuous anastomosis was performed between the donor LHV and common orifice of the recipient HV. In the later group (group 2: 29 patients), the posterior wall of the anastomosis was sutured continuously while the anterior wall was sutured with interrupted sutures. HV thrombosis was detected in one patient and stenosis was detected in four patients in group 1. No hepatic venous outflow obstruction was detected in group 2 (p < 0.05). In both groups, mortality was not associated with hepatic venous outflow obstruction. As our results indicate, the novel technique used in this study is a simple and safe anastomosis procedure that has contributed into overcoming hepatic venous outflow problems in pediatric LDLT. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava: Report of a case

    WOS: 000220496400016PubMed ID: 15052457We report a case of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava, which was successfully treated by surgical en bloc resection and reconstruction of the inferior vena cava, followed by adjuvant radiation therapy. A 39-year-old man presented with nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, and weight loss. Radiologic examinations showed a mass originating from the inferior vena cava and surgical resection was performed. Histopathological examination of the specimen revealed a moderately differentiated (grade II) leiomyosarcoma arising from the inferior vena cava. We believe that radical resection with clear surgical margins followed by adjuvant radiation therapy is a good curative strategy for achieving any chance of long-term survival
