Non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid transports in iron-pnictide Ba(Fe₁₋ₓCoₓ)₂As₂ and the electronic correlation strength in superconductors newly probed by the normal-state Hall angle
Electrical transports in iron-pnictide Ba(Fe1−x Co x )2As2 (BFCA) single crystals are heavily debated in terms of the hidden Fermi-liquid (HFL) and holographic theories. Both HFL and holographic theories provide consistent physic pictures and propose a universal expression of resistivity to describe the crossover of transports from the non-Fermi-liquid (FL) to FL behavior in these so-called \u27strange metal\u27 systems. The deduced spin exchange energy J and model-dependent energy scale W in BFCA are almost the same, or are of the same order of several hundred Kelvin for over-doped BFCA, which is in agreement with the HFL theory. Moreover, a drawn line of W/3.5 for BFCA in the higher-doping region up to the right demonstrates the crossover from non-FL-like behavior to FL-like behavior at high doping, and shows a new phase diagram of BFCA. The electronic correlation strength in superconductors has been newly probed by the normal-state Hall angle, which found that, for the first time, correlation strength can be characterized by the ratios of T c to the Fermi temperature T F, J/T F, and the transverse mass to longitudinal mass
Identification of the tapetum/microspore-specific promoter of the pathogenesis-related 10 gene and its regulation in the anther of Lilium longiflorum
A tapetum/microspore-specific pathogenesis-related (PR) 10 gene was previously identified in lily (Lilium longiflorum Thunb.) anthers. In situ hybridization and RNA blot analysis indicated that the lily PR10 genes are expressed specifically and differentially in the tapetum of the anther wall and in microspores during anther development. The accumulation of PR10 transcripts was exogenously induced by gibberellic acid (GA) and was suppressed by ethylene. Studies using inhibitors of GA and ethylene revealed that the lily PR10 is modulated by an antagonistic interaction between GA and ethylene. The treatment of norbornadien, an ethylene inhibitor, caused the tapetum to become densely cytoplasmic and highly polarized, whereas uniconazole, an inhibitor of GA biosynthesis, arrested tapetal development to a status close to that of control. The expression of the lily PR10g promoter in transgenic Arabidopsis was determined using the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene indicated that the decisive fragment required for anther specificity is located -1183 bp to -880 bp upstream of the transcription start site. The PR10gPro::barnase transgenic lines exhibited complete male sterility because of the disruption of the tapetum and the deformation of microspore/pollen. The anther specificity of lily PR10 highlights the importance of the tapetum/microspore-specific PR10g promoter for future biotechnological and agricultural applications
A Novel Inspection Protocol to Detect Volatile Compounds in Breast Surgery Electrocautery Smoke
Electrocautery procedures generate malodorous smoke. This study quantified five volatile organic compounds detected in the smoke produced during breast surgery, and elucidated the factors that affect their chemical production.
Methods: All samplers were assembled in an acrylic chamber with a Tygon tube attached to the tip of a diathermy pencil. The electrocautery smoke was quantified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
Results: In all samples, toluene was identified in concentrations of 2.48–5.50 mg/m3. Higher concentrations were observed during modified radical mastectomy procedures. Patients with high body mass index revealed high toluene concentrations. Longer duration of electrocautery tended to produce more toluene.
Conclusion: The sampling protocol enabled acquisition of smoke samples near the source without interrupting surgery. The findings suggest that type of surgery, patient body mass index and duration of electrocautery are factors that can alter production of chemicals
Effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy on M1-Related Cytokine Expression in Monocytes via Histone Modification
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been used in the treatment of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis and allergic rhinitis. However, the effects of LLLT on human monocyte polarization into M1 macrophages are unknown. To evaluate the effects of LLLT on M1-related cytokine and chemokine production and elucidate the mechanism, the human monocyte cell line THP-1 was treated with different doses of LLLT. The expression of M1-related cytokines and chemokines (CCL2, CXCL10, and TNF-α) was determined by ELISA and real-time PCR. LLLT-associated histone modifications were examined by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays. Mitochondrial involvement in the LLLT-induced M1-related cytokine expression was evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR. Flow cytometry was used to detect the cell surface markers for monocyte polarization. The results showed that LLLT (660 nm) significantly enhanced M1-related cytokine and chemokine expression in mRNA and protein levels. Mitochondrial copy number and mRNA levels of complex I-V protein were increased by LLLT (1 J/cm(2)). Activation of M1 polarization was concomitant with histone modification at TNF-α gene locus and IP-10 gene promoter area. This study indicates that LLLT (660 nm) enhanced M1-related cytokine and chemokine expression via mitochondrial biogenesis and histone modification, which may be a potent immune-enhancing agent for the treatment of allergic diseases
