Innovative Method of the Power Analysis

    Get PDF
This paper describes an innovative method of the power analysis which presents the typical example of successful attacks against trusted cryptographic devices such as RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentifications) and contact smart cards. The proposed method analyzes power consumption of the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm with neural network, which successively classifies the first byte of the secret key. This way of the power analysis is an entirely new approach and it is designed to combine the advantages of simple and differential power analysis. In the extreme case, this feature allows to determine the whole secret key of a cryptographic module only from one measured power trace. This attribute makes the proposed method very attractive for potential attackers. Besides theoretical design of the method, we also provide the first implementation results. We assume that the method will be certainly optimized to obtain more accurate classification results in the future

Novel anisotropic continuum-discrete damage model capable of representing localized failure of massive structures. Part II: identification from tests under heterogeneous stress field

In Part I of this paper we have presented a simple model capable of describing the localized failure of a massive structure. In this part, we discuss the identification of the model parameters from two kinds of experiments: a uniaxial tensile test and a three-point bending test. The former is used only for illustration of material parameter response dependence, and we focus mostly upon the latter, discussing the inverse optimization problem for which the specimen is subjected to a heterogeneous stress field.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 6 table

Challenges of ”a new hybrid ecosystem”: celebrities, fake news and Covid-19

    Get PDF
The complex intertwining of mainstream and social media has resulted in the creation of a “new hybrid ecosystem” in which consumers are primarily engaged with ideas and news posted on social media, that are then transmitted as news in mainstream media (Wheeler 2018). In this new “hyper-connected environment” (Pepper 2018), “fake news” occupies a specific position. The concept of “fake news” is very complex, contradictory and ambivalent because it appears as an umbrella term covering various phenomena and different practices of which some are already known, while others are fairly new (Molina et al. 2021). The new communication environment and the role of fake news as part of it, may also be analysed through the celebrity phenomenon. This paper uses the method of discourse analysis to examine texts on various statements by celebrities about COVID-19, published on two web portals in Croatia (index.hr, 24sata.hr). It becomes clear that celebrities function as very potent sharers of fake news, since consumers of online content give great weight to their actions and statements. On the other hand, mainstream media often act as a corrective to social media, in their efforts to convincingly deny fake news and the celebrities that share them on social media

Dynamic wheelset drive load of the railway vehicle caused by short-circuit motor moment

    Get PDF
The paper deals with mathematical modelling of dynamic response of the railway vehicle wheelset drives caused by short-circuit traction motor torque. The individual wheelset drive with hollow graduated shaft is one of subsystems of the two-axled vehicle bogie with two wheelset drives. The model respects the viscoelastic suspension of the both engine stators with gear housings mounted on the bogie frame and all the other couplings among bogie drive components. The dynamic response is investigated in dependence on longitudinal creepage and forward velocity of the vehicle at the moment of the sudden short-circuit in one asynchronous traction motor. The method is applied to bogie of the electric locomotive developed for speed about 200 km/h by the company ŠKODA TRANSPORTATION, s. r. o. The wheelset drive vibration is confronted with stability conditions of the whole bogie

Far-Right Activism on Croatian Mainstream News Portals: Contributing to (and Changing) the Public Debate on the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Get PDF
This paper analyses online user comments on two mainstream Croatian portals, Index.hr and 24sata.hr respective of the COVID-19 pandemic and global conspiracies and fake news in the context of decreasing media trust. Three-tier coding was conducted on 12,910 comments (2,194 at the portal 24 sata and 10,716 at the portal index.hr) and a thematic analysis was carried out. Findings showed that the main themes capture global conspiracy theories, including fascism as one of the main themes, as well as disbelief in the reality of the pandemic and negative views of the mainstream media seen as intertwined with the Government and promoting one-sided views. Since the findings were unexpected particularly respective of a large criticism of the media and due to a large amount of conspiracy-related content on two portals neither of which is normally associated with the far right, an abductive analysis was conducted. The results revealed that the majority of content in user comments respective of fascism and slavery as features of the COVID-19 policy in Croatia was posted either by a far-right political party (on Index.hr) or two unidentified users (on 24sata.hr) (likely far-right activists) and in both cases, comments were copy-pasted including grammar mistakes. This signals an attempt of the far right in Croatia to not just contribute but also manipulate public opinion and debates as well as give a false impression to an inattentive reader of views of the Croatian public respective of the COVID-19 pandemic

Seismic response of nuclear fuel assembly

    Get PDF
The paper deals with mathematical modelling and computer simulation of the seismic response of fuel assembly components. The seismic response is investigated by numerical integration method in time domain. The seismic excitation is given by two horizontal and one vertical synthetic accelerograms at the level of the pressure vessel seating. Dynamic response of the hexagonal type nuclear fuel assembly is caused by spatial motion of the support plates in the reactor core investigated on the reactor global model. The modal synthesis method with condensation is used for calculation of the fuel assembly component displacements and speeds on the level of the spacer grid cells

    Age, gender and COVID-19 infections

Data for ten European countries which provide detailed distribution of COVID-19 cases by sex and age show that among people of working age, women diagnosed with COVID-19 substantially outnumber infected men. This pattern reverses around retirement: infection rates among women fall at age 60-69, resulting in a cross-over with infection rates among men. The relative disadvantage of women peaks at ages 20-29, whereas the male disadvantage in infection rates peaks at ages 70-79. The elevated infection rates among women of working age are likely tied to their higher share in health- and care-related occupations. Our examination also suggests a link between women's employment profiles and infection rates in prime working ages. The same factors that determine women's higher life expectancy account for their lower fatality and higher male disadvantage at older ages

How do older people discuss their own sexuality? A systematic review of qualitative research studies

    Get PDF
This study captured older people’s attitudes and concerns about sex and sexuality in later life by synthesising qualitative research published on this issue. The systematic review was conducted between November 2015 and June 2016 based on a pre-determined protocol. Key words were used to ensure a precise search strategy. Empirically based, qualitative literature from 18 databases was found. Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria. Thomas and Harden’s thematic synthesis was used to generate ‘analytical themes’ which summarise this body of literature. Three main themes were identified: (a) social legitimacy for sexuality in later life; (b) health, not age, is what truly impacts sexuality, and (c) the hegemony of penetrative sex. The themes illustrate the complex and delicate relation between ageing and sexuality. Older adults facing health issues that affect sexual function adopt broader definitions of sexuality and sexual activit
