Alone together: Exploring community on an incel forum

    Get PDF
Incels, or involuntary celibates, are men who are angry and frustrated at their inability to find sexual or intimate partners. This anger has repeatedly resulted in violence against women. Because incels are a relatively new phenomenon, there are many gaps in our knowledge, including how, and to what extent, incel forums function as online communities. The current study begins to fill this lacuna by qualitatively analyzing the incels.co forum to understand how community is created through online discourse. Both inductive and deductive thematic analyses were conducted on 17 threads (3400 posts). The results confirm that the incels.co forum functions as a community. Four themes in relation to community were found: The incel brotherhood; We can disagree, but youā€™re wrong; We are all coping here; and Will the real incel come forward. The four themes elucidate that incels most often exchange informational and emotional support

Flattened Galactic Haloes and Baryonic Dark Matter

We discuss the tight interconnection between microlensing optical depths, flattening of dark haloes and low-to-intermediate redshift baryonic census. By analysing plots of the microlensing optical depth as a function of galactic coordinates for different values of axis ratio qq of the galactic MACHO halo, we have shown that observations are best described by a flattened halo with qā‰ƒ0.6q \simeq 0.6. There is no dynamical obstacle for such a choice of global halo shape. Both extremely flattened qā‰ƒ0.2q \simeq 0.2 and spherical qā‰ƒ1q \simeq 1 haloes have several difficulties, although not of equal severity. Consequences of such flattening for the cosmological density fraction contained in MACHOs are considered and comparison with mass in low and intermediate-redshift LyĪ±\alpha forest and other plausible reservoirs of gas is discussed in context of a unified description of the evolution of baryonic content of the universe.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, TeX, uses mn.tex and psfig.tex, MNRAS accepte

Perception of Early Croatian History in the Contemporary British Historiography

Current British encyclopaedic and other similar editions that give general historical information give only piecemeal and incomplete data about the earliest period of Croatian history. Information about Croatian mediaeval history (creation of the Hungarian-Croat kingdom, Croatian acceptance of the Habsburg rule, period of Ottoman Turks occupation of Croatian areas) is also limited and incomplete. Much more information is given on Croatian 19th century history but Croatian history is still observed only as an element in the history of more important political entities which ruled Croatian territories during that period. Historical events and developments in Croatia are mentioned only if they also had an influence on developments outside Croatia (Military border, Zrinski magnate family, Uskoks of Senj, Illyrian provinces, 1848-1849 revolution). Obviously Croatian history is still largely unknown to British historians and public. Much information is missing and the existing information can lead to wrong conclusions about Croatian history. Without new and more comprehensive articles on Croatia in the future British historical editions it is highly unlikely that British reader will get an objective picture of Croatian history

E-Inclusion of Vulnerable Groups: Review of International Documents from 1990 until 2020

An ageing population is a global problem that carries with it significant implications for the economy and society. The older population makes nearly a third of the population. In the last thirty years, public policy has been finding solutions to alleviate the economic and social problems that arise as a result of the aging of nations. A present in which the digitalization of all domains of life is the primary theme for profitability and consistency of economic entities imposes new standards of behaviour and habits of citizens. This particularly affects the elderly population, which is expected to be e-inclusive in the digital society and economy, which often makes it difficult to use digital services, whether public or commercial. The results of the analysis of public policies for the period from 1990 to 2020 show that of all four key constructs of the General Theoretical Conceptual Model for e-inclusion (ā€œAccessā€, ā€œUsageā€, ā€œEmpowermentā€ and ā€œImpact on the quality of lifeā€), the most represented constructs are ā€œUsageā€ and ā€œImpact on the quality of lifeā€. What is somewhat worrisome is that in the observed period, a very small percentage (19%) of public policies included the connection of all four key constructs, and that public policies were related to vulnerable population groups, such as the elderly population. The results related to the institutions that most encouraged the e-inclusion of especially vulnerable groups in their strategies are the European Commission, the OECD and the European Parliament. It is precisely e-inclusion that is a necessary prerequisite for independence, active involvement in society and for improving the quality of life, especially for vulnerable groups of the population. All stakeholders should be aware of this, because otherwise, if digital transformation is carried out without e-inclusion of all groups, especially vulnerable groups, those who are already empowered are additionally strengthened, and those who could benefit the most from digital transformation benefits, ā€œvulnerable groupsā€ remain somewhere on the sidelines and continue to be underpowered and neglected
