An absorption spectrum amplifier for determining gas composition
Compositions of gas samples are frequently studied by laser absorption spectroscopy. Sensitivity is improved by two orders of magnitude when absorption cell is placed inside an organic-dye laser cavity
Bonded and Stitched Composite Structure
A method of forming a composite structure can include providing a plurality of composite panels of material, each composite panel having a plurality of holes extending through the panel. An adhesive layer is applied to each composite panel and a adjoining layer is applied over the adhesive layer. The method also includes stitching the composite panels, adhesive layer, and adjoining layer together by passing a length of a flexible connecting element into the plurality of holes in the composite panels of material. At least the adhesive layer is cured to bond the composite panels together and thereby form the composite structure
Methods for Assessing Honeycomb Sandwich Panel Wrinkling Failures
Efficient closed-form methods for predicting the facesheet wrinkling failure mode in sandwich panels are assessed. Comparisons were made with finite element model predictions for facesheet wrinkling, and a validated closed-form method was implemented in the HyperSizer structure sizing software
Neglected Interiors
The images in the series, Neglected Interiors, capture the remote interior spaces of abandoned industrial buildings. I focus on the aesthetic qualities of the room as there is wonder in the remnants and vacant structures. Anyone can view the exterior, however by entering the gated facility grounds, I can give glimpses into the industries left behind. I experience thrills by trespassing, uncovering decaying ruins in hazardous conditions. I travel through these spaces, reflecting on how they were once fully functioning and wonder about the building's former life.B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts
Shell evolution and nuclear forces
We present a quantitative study of the role played by different components
characterizing the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the evolution of the nuclear
shell structure. It is based on the spin-tensor decomposition of an effective
two-body shell-model interaction and the subsequent study of effective
single-particle energy variations in a series of isotopes or isotones. The
technique allows to separate unambiguously contributions of the central, vector
and tensor components of the realistic effective interaction. We show that
while the global variation of the single-particle energies is due to the
central component of the effective interaction, the characteristic behavior of
spin-orbit partners, noticed recently, is mainly due to its tensor part. Based
on the analysis of a well-fitted realistic interaction in sdpf-shell model
space, we analyze in detail the role played by the different terms in the
formation and/or disappearance of N=16, N=20 and N=28 shell gaps in
neutron-rich nuclei.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Intracellular zinc depletion induces caspase activation and p21Waf1/Cip1 cleavage in human epithelial cell lines
To better understand the mechanisms by which zinc deficiency induces epithelial cell death, studies were done of the effects of intracellular zinc depletion induced by the zinc chelator TPEN on apoptosis-related events in human malignant epithelial cell lines LIM1215 (colonic), NCI-H292 (bronchial), and A549 (alveolar type II). In TPEN-treated cells, depletion of zinc was followed by activation of caspase-3 (as demonstrated by enzymatic assay and Western blotting), DNA fragmentation, and morphologic changes. Increase in caspase-3 activity began 1–2 h after addition of TPEN, suggesting that zinc may suppress a step just before the activation of this caspase. Caspase-6, a mediator of caspase-3 processing, also increased, but later than caspase-3. Effects of TPEN on apoptosis were completely prevented by exogenous ZnSO4 and partially prevented by peptide caspase inhibitors. A critical substrate of caspase-3 may be the cell cycle regulator p21Waf1/Cip1, which was rapidly cleaved in TPEN-treated cells to a 15-kDa fragment before further degradation.F. Chai, A. Q. Transmission Loss and Absorption of Corrugated Core Sandwich Panels With Embedded Resonators
The effect of embedded resonators on the diffuse field sound transmission loss and absorption of composite corrugated core sandwich panels has been evaluated experimentally. Two 1.219 m 2.438 m panels with embedded resonator arrangements targeting frequencies near 100 Hz were evaluated using non-standard processing of ASTM E90-09 acoustic transmission loss and ASTM C423-09a room absorption test measurements. Each panel is comprised of two composite face sheets sandwiching a corrugated core with a trapezoidal cross section. When inlet openings are introduced in one face sheet, the chambers within the core can be used as embedded acoustic resonators. Changes to the inlet and chamber partition locations allow this type of structure to be tuned for targeted spectrum passive noise control. Because the core chambers are aligned with the plane of the panel, the resonators can be tuned for low frequencies without compromising the sandwich panel construction, which is typically sized to meet static load requirements. Absorption and transmission loss performance improvements attributed to opening the inlets were apparent for some configurations and inconclusive for others
The anomalous threshold, confinement, and an essential singularity in the heavy-light form factor
The analytic behavior of the heavy-light meson form factor is investigated
using several relativistic examples including unconfined, weakly confined, and
strongly confined mesons. It is observed that confinement erases the anomalous
threshold singularity and also induces an essential singularity at the normal
annihilation threshold. In the weak confinement limit, the "would be" anomalous
threshold contribution is identical to that of the real singularity on its
space-like side.Comment: Latex 2.09 with epsf.sty. 24 pages of text and 8 postscript figures.

Sound Transmission Loss Through a Corrugated-Core Sandwich Panel with Integrated Acoustic Resonators
The goal of this study is to better understand the effect of structurally integrated resonators on the transmission loss of a sandwich panel. The sandwich panel has facesheets over a corrugated core, which creates long aligned chambers that run parallel to the facesheets. When ports are introduced through the facesheet, the long chambers within the core can be used as low-frequency acoustic resonators. By integrating the resonators within the structure they contribute to the static load bearing capability of the panel while also attenuating noise. An analytical model of a panel with embedded resonators is derived and compared with numerical simulations. Predictions show that acoustic resonators can significantly improve the transmission loss of the sandwich panel around the natural frequency of the resonators. In one configuration with 0.813 m long internal chambers, the diffuse field transmission loss is improved by more than 22 dB around 104 Hz. The benefit is achieved with no added mass or volume relative to the baseline structure. The embedded resonators are effective because they radiate sound out-of-phase with the structure. This results in destructive interference, which leads to less transmitted sound power
Confinement from new global defect structures
We investigate confinement from new global defect structures in three spatial
dimensions. The global defects arise in models described by a single real
scalar field, governed by special scalar potentials. They appear as
electrically, magnetically or dyonically charged structures. We show that they
induce confinement, when they are solutions of effective QCD-like field
theories in which the vacua are regarded as color dielectric media with an
anti-screening property. As expected, in three spatial dimensions the
monopole-like global defects generate the Coulomb potential as part of several
confining potentials.Comment: RevTex4, 7 pages, 1 figure. Version to appear in Eur. Phys. J.
