Work-life balance practice: A proposed study for a Japanese higher education institution

    Get PDF
Work-life balance (WLB) has continuously been the subject of interest for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. Japan, a country suffering from a significant decline in their working population, has been criticised for the long working hours for many years, which is attributed to the traditional work culture that emphasises work as a way of life rather than working just for work sake. To combat these threatening issues, Japan must redress its excessive working hours and increase flexibility to attract and retain women workers who are traditionally known to be burdened with family obligations. Japan, a country suffering from a significant decline in their working population, has been criticised for the long working hours for many years, which is attributed to the traditional work culture that emphasises work as a way of life rather than working just for work sake, hence impeding the individual ability to balance work and life. This conceptual paper aims to cast a light on new empirical evidence concerning the work-life balance practice in Japan from a private higher education institution perspective. The purpose of the study is to explore donor relationship management (DRM) for funding in Malaysian Social Welfare Non-Governmental Organisations (SWNGOs). NGOs largely depend on donor funding to support their operations. However, donors’ funding can be limited. With the growing number of Malaysian NGOs, it has become more challenging in competing for donor funding. Through a semi-structured interview with six Malaysian SWNGOs, this study discovered that an exchange relationship was employed by Malaysian SWNGOs to manage their relationship with donors. Also, this study proposes a DRM model to secure funding for Malaysian NGOs. Keywords: Donor Relationship Management; Funding; Malaysian SWNGOs eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2022. The Authors. Get PDF
The technical and vocational education and training (TVET) program occupies the national education system to allow the students to learn practical, hands-on skills aligned with the industries' needs, ultimately preparing the students for the inexorable integration of technology brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0). The rapid pace of change and broad impacts featuring IR 4.0 demand specific critical thinking skills, creativity, and readiness for risks, the qualities that are connected to entrepreneurship. Thus, it clarifies offering entrepreneurship education (EE) alongside a TVET program. There are arguments that EE is poorly embedded into the TVET program in Malaysia. The instructional elements concerned with the content, techniques, and activities through which students engage in creating entrepreneurial knowledge and value are considered essential for EE's success in a TVET program. This study assesses the state of instructional elements (i.e. content, teaching methods, infrastructure facilities, and learning assessments) of EE offered within a TVET program in Malaysia. Data were obtained from 37 students of a private technical university in Malaysia who enrolled for their entrepreneurship course through a series of group interviews. The study enlightens a few meaningful findings to propagate the entrepreneurial culture within a TVET program: (1) the content should be tailored to the readiness of the students, (2) action-based teaching methods should be engaged, (3) prior entrepreneurship experience should be specified for the entrepreneurship lecturer; (4) presence of ideal infrastructure facilities, and (5) learning assessments must be focusing in developing attributes of entrepreneurs

The issue of happiness in organisation has been debated among academicians, practitioners, and policy makers nowadays. This is because it provides an index of how well things are going within the organisational context. The ability for an organisation to track front-line employee’s happiness over time is a very useful in order to achieve organisation’s successful policies and practices. Some previous studies conducted to measure the relationship contribute of work-life balance effects in quality in life, life satisfaction and wellbeing. Also, the impact of decreased income on happiness has hardly been studied except through the drop in income due to unemployment. Therefore, this paper attempts to show the relationship of work-life balance and life satisfaction with the mediating role of happiness. The main problem is to relate the situation to the Malaysian Financial Sector work-life balance with sense of happiness by World Happiness Report to get the outcomes of life satisfaction. Perhaps for these reasons, towards the end of this paper, happiness is proposed to be measured in mediating concept by linking the relationship of work-life balance and life satisfaction

    Get PDF
Electronic Human Resource Management (e-HRM) is “…the application of information technology for both networking and supporting at least at least two individual or collective actors in their shared performing of HR activities†(Strohmeir, 2007). Using a survey method, this study reports the determinant of employee attitude towards e-HRM in an engineering company in Malaysia. There are basically two major independent variables i.e. perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The overall results show that the employees had significantly positive attitude towards e-HRM as they perceived that the system is useful and easy to use. Data shows that they intend to use e-HRM and predict that they would use e-HRM in future. The findings of this research provide valuable insights for the management to create a positive attitude towards technological interventions especially in assisting human resource management. Hence, a company should enhance the employees’ understanding of the system through a proper and thorough training so that they will perceive the system as useful and easy to use
