In this thesis the author seeks to establish the most appropriate mechanism for conducting sentiment analysis with respect to political debates; firstly so as to predict their outcome and secondly to support a mechanism to provide for the visualisation of such debates in the context of further analysis. To this end two alternative approaches are considered, a classification-based approach and a lexicon-based approach. In the context of the second approach both generic and domain specific sentiment lexicons are considered. Two techniques to generating domain-specific sentiment lexicons are also proposed: (i) direct generation and (ii) adaptation. The first was founded on the idea of generating a dedicated lexicon directly from labelled source data. The second approach was founded on the idea of using an existing general purpose lexicon and adapting this so that it becomes a specialised lexicon with respect to some domain. The operation of both the generic and domain specific sentiment lexicons are compared with the classification-based approach. The comparison between the potential sentiment mining approaches was conducted by predicting the attitude of individual debaters (speakers) in political debates (using a corpus of labelled political speeches extracted from political debate transcripts taken from the proceedings of the UK House of Commons). The reported comparison indicates that the attitude of speakers can be effectively predicted using sentiment mining. The author then goes on to propose a framework, the Debate Graph Extraction (DGE) framework, for extracting debate graphs from transcripts of political debates. The idea is to represent the structure of a debate as a graph with speakers as nodes and “exchanges” as links. Links between nodes were established according to the exchanges between the speeches. Nodes were labelled according to the “attitude” (sentiment) of the speakers, “positive” or “negative”, using one of the three proposed sentiment mining approaches. The attitude of the speakers was then used to label the graph links as being either “supporting” or “opposing”. If both speakers had the same attitude (both “positive” or both “negative”) the link was labelled as being “supporting”; otherwise the link was labelled as being “opposing”. The resulting graphs capture the abstract representation of a debate where two opposing factions exchange arguments on related content. Finally, the author moves to discuss mechanisms whereby debate graphs can be structurally analysed using network mathematics and community detection techniques. To this end the debate graphs were conceptualised as networks in order to conduct appropriate network analysis. The significance was that the network mathematics and community detection processes can draw conclusions about the general properties of debates in parliamentary practice through the exploration of the embedded patterns of connectivity and reactivity between the exchanging nodes (speakers)

Most sports are attractive because they are almost unpredictable. The more the competitiveness of league teams, the harder to predict the games and as a result, that league will be more attractive. Competitive balance refers to the balance in sport capabilities of teams. The aim of this paper was to compare the competitive balance in football premier leagues of Iran, England, Germany, Spain, France and Italy in 2009-2010 season. The data were secondary and collected from the final tables of premier leagues of those countries in 2009-2010 season. The five-club concentration ratio (C5) and C5 index of competitive balance (C5ICB) were used to analyze the data. The less C5ICB and C5 are, the more competitive balance is, and conversely. The C5ICB results showed that the leagues were ranked (ranging from most balance to least balance) as follows: Iran Pro League (129.60), Germany Bundesliga (135.37), French 1st League (138), Serie A, Italy (140), English Premier League (148) and Primera Liga, Spain (149.60). As a result, Iran premier league enjoyed the most balance and Primera Liga, Spain the least balance. In spite of the sport economics research representing lack of comparability between European leagues and other leagues in world, competitive balance has been decreased clearly in European leagues

The transition to using dual-purpose chickens is an alternative to killing male hatchlings of high performance egg-laying chickens. This study aimed to compare the gastrointestinal tract of a recently developed genetic line of dual purpose male chicken, Lohmann Dual (LD), with that of a broiler line, Ross 308. Eighty birds from each line were grown until they reached an average body weight 2000 g (5 weeks for Ross and 9 for LD birds). Six birds of each line were sampled weekly. Body weight (BW), normalized mass of gastrointestinal segments and relative length of intestine were determined. Histologically the villus height, epithelium height, crypt depth, mucosal enlargement factor and the tunica muscularis thickness were measured in jejunum and ileum. Data were regressed against body weight and genetic line. Jejunal enterocyte microvilli and junctional complexes length were measured. Normalized mass and relative length of the gastrointestinal segments were greater in LD birds than in Ross birds at all ages. After day 7 these decreased steadily over the lifetime of the birds in both genetic lines. The growth curves of the gastrointestinal segments of the LD birds were similar to those of the Ross birds. In birds of the same BW, LD birds had a significantly heavier gizzard, shorter intestine, higher jejunal villi, thicker ileal tunica muscularis and smaller ileal mucosal enlargement factor than were found in Ross birds. The large gizzard in LD chickens presumably increases the degree of food processing and enhances availability of nutrients in the orad part of the intestine leading to a lower nutrient concentration and a smaller absorption surface area in the ileum of the LD compared to the Ross chickens. The anatomical differences between the two lines are important criteria for further selection and should be considered in their feeding management

Continuous loading of the skeleton by the body’s weight is an important factor in establishing and maintaining bone morphology, architecture and strength. However, in fast-growing chickens the appendicular skeleton growth is suboptimal making these chickens predisposed to skeletal mineralization disorders and fractures. This study compared the macro- and microstructure as well as the mechanical properties of the tibiotarsus of a novel dual-purpose, Lohmann Dual (LD) and a highly developed broiler, Ross (Ross 308) chicken line. Eighty one-day-old male chicks of each line were grown until their body weight (BW) reached 2000g. Starting at the day of hatching, six birds of each line were sampled weekly. The weight, length and width of the tibiotarsus were measured and its mechanical properties (rigidity, M-Max and the M-fracture) were evaluated using the three-point bending test. Additionally, the mineral density of both, trabecular and cortical bone, the bone volume fraction, the trabecular number, thickness and separation plus cortical thickness of both chicken lines were analyzed using microcomputed tomography. The growth of the tibiotarsus in both chicken lines followed a similar pattern. At the same age, the lighter LD chickens had shorter, thinner and lighter tibiotarsi than those of Ross chickens. However, the LD chickens had a similar cortical thickness, bone volume fraction and similar mineral density of both trabecular and cortical bone to that of Ross chickens. Furthermore, the tibiotarsus of LD chickens was longer, heavier and wider than those of Ross chickens of the same BW. In addition the rigidity of the LD tibiotarsus was greater than that of Ross chickens. This suggests that the tibiotarsus of LD chickens had more bending resistance than those of Ross chickens of the same BW. Consequently, fattening LD chickens to the marketable weight should not affect their leg skeleton stability

Monitoring strategic agricultural crops in terms of crop growth performance, by accurate cost-effective and quick tools is crucially important in site-specific management to avoid crop reductions. The availability of commercial high resolution satellite images with high resolution (spatial and spectral) as well as in situ spectra measurements can help decision takers to have deep insight on crop stress in a certain region. The research attempts to examine remote sensing dataset for forecasting wheat crop (Sakha 61) characteristics including the leaf area index (LAI), plant height (plant-h), above ground biomass (AGB) and Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) value of wheat across non-stress, drought and salinity-induced stress in the Nile Delta region. In this context, the ability of in situ spectroradiometry measurements and QuickBird high resolution images was evaluated in our research. The efficiency of Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), mathematical models was assessed to estimate the four measured wheat characteristics based on vegetation spectral reflectance indices (V-SRIs) extracted from both approaches and their interactions. Field surveys were carried out to collect in situ spectroradiometry measurements concomitant with the acquisition of QuickBird imagery. The results demonstrated that several V-SRIs extracted from in situ spectroradiometry data and the QuickBird image correlated with the LAI, plant-h, AGB, and SPAD value of wheat crop across the study site. The determination coefficient (R2) values of the association between V-SRIs of in situ spectroradiometry data and various determined wheat characteristics varied from 0.26 to 0.85. The ANN-GSIs-3 was found to be the optimum predictive model, demonstrating a greater relationship between the advanced features and LAI. The three features of V-SRIs comprised in this model were strongly significant for the prediction of LAI. The attained results indicated high R2 values of 0.94 and 0.86 for the training and validation phases. The ANN-GSIs-3 model constructed for the determination of chlorophyll in the plant which had higher performance expectations (R2 = 0.96 and 0.92 for training and validation datasets, respectively). In conclusion, the results of our study revealed that high resolution remote sensing images such as QuickBird or similar imagery, and in situ spectroradiometry measurements have the feasibility of providing necessary crop monitoring data across non-stressed and stressed (drought and salinity) conditions when integrating V-SRIs with ANN and RF algorithms

In Tunisia, the ATRA era began in 1998 with the use, consecutively, of two regimens combining ATRA and an anthracycline with cytarabine (APL93), and without cytarabine (LPA99). From 2004, 51 patients with confirmed APL either by t(15;17) or PML/RARA were treated according to the PETHEMA LPA 99 trial. Forty three patients achieved CR (86%). The remaining seven patients had early death (one died before treatment onset): four caused by differentiation syndrome (DS) and three died from central nervous system hemorrhage. Multivariate analysis revealed that female gender (P=0.045), baseline WBC> 10 G/L (P=0.041) and serum creatinine > 1.4mg/dl (P=0.021) were predictive of mortality during induction. DS was observed in 16 patients (32%) after a median onset time of 15 days from treatment onset (range, 2–29). Body mass index ≥ 30 (P=0.01) remained independent predictor of DS. Occurrence of hypertensive peaks significantly predicted occurrence of DS (P=0.011) and was significantly associated with high BMI (p=0.003). With a median follow-up of 50 months, 5 year cumulative incidence of relapse, event free and overall survival were 4.7%, 74% and 78%, respectively

Temporal Dynamics and Impact of Climate Factors on the Incidence of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Central Tunisia

Old world cutaneous leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease occurring in rural areas of developing countries. The main reservoirs are the rodents Psammomys obesus and Meriones shawi. Zoonotic Leishmania transmission cycle is maintained in the burrows of rodents where the sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi finds the ideal environment and source of blood meals. In the present study we showed seasonality of the incidence of disease during the same cycle with an inter-epidemic period ranging from 4 to 7 years. We evaluated the impact of climate variables (rainfall, humidity and temperature) on the incidence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniais in central Tunisia. We confirmed that the risk of disease is mainly influenced by the humidity related to the months of July to September during the same season and mean rainfall lagged by 12 to 14 months

WR279,396, a Third Generation Aminoglycoside Ointment for the Treatment of Leishmania major Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Phase 2, Randomized, Double Blind, Placebo Controlled Study

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is due to a small parasite (Leishmania) that creates disfiguring sores, and affects more than one million persons (mainly children) each year. Treating lesions with a cream—instead of with injections as currently done—would greatly improve the well-being of affected patients. No cream formulation that would be efficient and would not create important skin irritation has been identified yet. Here, we tested a new cream formulation (WR279,396) containing paromomycin and gentamicin, two members of a well-known family of antibacterial antibiotics (aminoglycosides). Injectable paromomycin is efficient in other forms of the disease (visceral leishmaniasis). This was a carefully monitored study (phase 2) involving mainly children in Tunisia and France. The cream was applied twice a day for 20 days. The proportion of patients treated with the paromomycin-containing cream (active formulation) that cured (94%) was higher than that observed (71%) in patients treated with a cream that did not contain the active product (placebo formulation). Local irritation affected less than one-third of the patients and was usually mild. This new cream formulation was safe and effective in treating cutaneous leishmaniasis, thereby providing a new, simple, easily applicable, and inexpensive treatment for this neglected disease
