    Personalized Interaction with High-Resolution Wall Displays

    Fallende Hardwarepreise sowie eine zunehmende Offenheit gegenĂŒber neuartigen InteraktionsmodalitĂ€ten haben in den vergangen Jahren den Einsatz von wandgroßen interaktiven Displays möglich gemacht, und in der Folge ist ihre Anwendung, unter anderem in den Bereichen Visualisierung, Bildung, und der UnterstĂŒtzung von Meetings, erfolgreich demonstriert worden. Aufgrund ihrer GrĂ¶ĂŸe sind Wanddisplays fĂŒr die Interaktion mit mehreren Benutzern prĂ€destiniert. Gleichzeitig kann angenommen werden, dass Zugang zu persönlichen Daten und Einstellungen — mithin personalisierte Interaktion — weiterhin essentieller Bestandteil der meisten AnwendungsfĂ€lle sein wird. Aktuelle Benutzerschnittstellen im Desktop- und Mobilbereich steuern Zugriffe ĂŒber ein initiales Login. Die Annahme, dass es nur einen Benutzer pro Bildschirm gibt, zieht sich durch das gesamte System, und ermöglicht unter anderem den Zugriff auf persönliche Daten und Kommunikation sowie persönliche Einstellungen. Gibt es hingegen mehrere Benutzer an einem großen Bildschirm, mĂŒssen hierfĂŒr Alternativen gefunden werden. Die daraus folgende Forschungsfrage dieser Dissertation lautet: Wie können wir im Kontext von Mehrbenutzerinteraktion mit wandgroßen Displays personalisierte Schnittstellen zur VerfĂŒgung stellen? Die Dissertation befasst sich sowohl mit personalisierter Interaktion in der NĂ€he (mit Touch als EingabemodalitĂ€t) als auch in etwas weiterer Entfernung (unter Nutzung zusĂ€tzlicher mobiler GerĂ€te). Grundlage fĂŒr personalisierte Mehrbenutzerinteraktion sind technische Lösungen fĂŒr die Zuordnung von Benutzern zu einzelnen Interaktionen. Hierzu werden zwei Alternativen untersucht: In der ersten werden Nutzer via Kamera verfolgt, und in der zweiten werden MobilgerĂ€te anhand von Ultraschallsignalen geortet. Darauf aufbauend werden Interaktionstechniken vorgestellt, die personalisierte Interaktion unterstĂŒtzen. Diese nutzen zusĂ€tzliche MobilgerĂ€te, die den Zugriff auf persönliche Daten sowie Interaktion in einigem Abstand von der Displaywand ermöglichen. Einen weiteren Teil der Arbeit bildet die Untersuchung der praktischen Auswirkungen der Ausgabe- und InteraktionsmodalitĂ€ten fĂŒr personalisierte Interaktion. Hierzu wird eine qualitative Studie vorgestellt, die Nutzerverhalten anhand des kooperativen Mehrbenutzerspiels Miners analysiert. Der abschließende Beitrag beschĂ€ftigt sich mit dem Analyseprozess selber: Es wird das Analysetoolkit fĂŒr Wandinteraktionen GIAnT vorgestellt, das Nutzerbewegungen, Interaktionen, und Blickrichtungen visualisiert und dadurch die Untersuchung der Interaktionen stark vereinfacht.An increasing openness for more diverse interaction modalities as well as falling hardware prices have made very large interactive vertical displays more feasible, and consequently, applications in settings such as visualization, education, and meeting support have been demonstrated successfully. Their size makes wall displays inherently usable for multi-user interaction. At the same time, we can assume that access to personal data and settings, and thus personalized interaction, will still be essential in most use-cases. In most current desktop and mobile user interfaces, access is regulated via an initial login and the complete user interface is then personalized to this user: Access to personal data, configurations and communications all assume a single user per screen. In the case of multiple people using one screen, this is not a feasible solution and we must find alternatives. Therefore, this thesis addresses the research question: How can we provide personalized interfaces in the context of multi-user interaction with wall displays? The scope spans personalized interaction both close to the wall (using touch as input modality) and further away (using mobile devices). Technical solutions that identify users at each interaction can replace logins and enable personalized interaction for multiple users at once. This thesis explores two alternative means of user identification: Tracking using RGB+depth-based cameras and leveraging ultrasound positioning of the users' mobile devices. Building on this, techniques that support personalized interaction using personal mobile devices are proposed. In the first contribution on interaction, HyDAP, we examine pointing from the perspective of moving users, and in the second, SleeD, we propose using an arm-worn device to facilitate access to private data and personalized interface elements. Additionally, the work contributes insights on practical implications of personalized interaction at wall displays: We present a qualitative study that analyses interaction using a multi-user cooperative game as application case, finding awareness and occlusion issues. The final contribution is a corresponding analysis toolkit that visualizes users' movements, touch interactions and gaze points when interacting with wall displays and thus allows fine-grained investigation of the interactions

    Effects of Sports Compression Socks on Performance, Physiological, and Hematological Alterations After Long-Haul Air Travel in Elite Female Volleyballers

J Strength Cond Res 33(2): 492-501, 2019-The purpose of this investigation was to assess the merit of sports compression socks in minimizing travel-induced performance, physiological, and hematological alterations in elite female volleyball athletes. Twelve elite female volleyballers (age, 25 ± 2 years) traveled from Canberra (Australia) to Manila (Philippines), and were assigned to 1 of 2 conditions; compression socks (COMP, n = 6) worn during travel or a passive control (CON, n = 6). Dependent measures included countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, subjective ratings of well-being, cardiovascular function, calf girth, and markers of blood clotting, collected before (-24 hours, CMJ; -12 hours, all measures), during (+6.5 and +9 hours, subjective ratings and cardiovascular function), and after (+12 hours, all measures except CMJ; +24 hours and +48 hours, CMJ) travel. When compared with CON, small-to-large effects were observed for COMP to improve heart rate (+9 hours), oxygen saturation (+6.5 hours and +9 hours), alertness (+6.5 hours), fatigue (+6.5 hours), muscle soreness (+6.5 hours and +9 hours), and overall health (+6.5 hours) during travel. After travel, small-to-moderate effects were observed for COMP to improve systolic blood pressure (+12 hours), right calf girth (+12 hours), CMJ height (+24 hours), mean velocity (+24 hours), and relative power (+48 hours), compared with CON. COMP had no effect on the markers of blood clotting. This study suggests that compression socks are beneficial in combating the stressors imposed by long-haul travel in elite athletes, and may have merit for individuals frequenting long-haul travel or competing soon after flying

    Where to now? A systematic review of moulage in health professions education

    The use of moulage in medical education dates to 17th century Europe. The word moulage means “to mould”, describing the technical process of making a negative mould of a body part and then filling it with wax. Despite its long history in medical education, moulage has been underappreciated in modern teaching. There has been very little research to inform the theoretical and practicalapplication of moulage. This abstract describes a systematic review that explored the effects of moulage interventions in simulation- based education and training, for learner experience. A secondary aim was to understand which pedagogical frameworks were embedded in moulage interventions.Method:Four databases (PubMed, CINAHL, EmBase, Proquest Central) were systematically searched to October 2021 for studies utilising moulage in simulation- based education experiences. There were no date exclusions, however manuscriptsother than English language were excluded. Outcomes we sought to explore focused on learner satisfaction, confidence, immersion, engagement,performance or knowledge.Results:A total of 19 studies (n=7490) were included in the study. These studies were primarily conducted in medicine (n=9 studies) and nursing (n=4 studies) and less frequently across other health disciplines. The findings demonstrated greaterlearner satisfaction, confidence, and immersion when moulage was used against a comparator group. Minimal improvements in knowledge andperformance were identified. Only one study underpinned the intervention with a pedagogical theory.Conclusions:Moulage contributes to improved learner experience in simulation training, but not knowledge or clinical performance. Gaps in the literature remain in areas outside of medicine and in work that includes strong learning theories

    Adolescents' longitudinal trajectories of mental health and loneliness: the impact of COVID-19 school closures

    INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal research examining the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) school closures on the mental health of adolescents is scarce. Prolonged periods of physical and social isolation because of such restrictions may have impacted heavily on adolescents’ mental health and loneliness. METHODS: The current study addresses a major gap by examining the impact of school closures on the mental health and loneliness of 785, 10‐ to 17‐year‐old Western Australian adolescents (mean age = 14.1, SD = 1.31), who were surveyed across four time points: twice before COVID‐19, once as schools closed, and once post reopening of schools. Pre‐ and post‐COVID‐19 changes in mental health and loneliness were compared using linear mixed models. Random intercept cross‐lagged panel models (RI‐CLPMs) assessed temporal associations between loneliness, depression symptoms, and positive mental wellbeing. RESULTS: Compared with pre‐COVID‐19 symptom levels, there were significant increases in depression symptoms, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and a significant decrease in positive mental wellbeing at different points over time. Symptom change over time differed according to gender and pre‐COVID‐19 symptom severity. Significant increases in positive attitudes towards being alone and feelings of isolation occurred at different points over time. Gender differences were evident. RI‐CLPMs highlighted the predictive significance of friendship quality and having a negative attitude towards being alone over time in relation to depression symptoms. A positive or negative attitude towards being alone was predictive of positive mental wellbeing over time. CONCLUSION: Findings provide evidence that COVID‐19‐related school closures adversely affected adolescents' mental health and feelings of loneliness

    Regionale Ungleichheit in Deutschland : Handlungsbedarf bei öffentlichen Dienstleistungen

    Die „Schaffung gleichwertiger LebensverhĂ€ltnisse“ ist erklĂ€rtes Ziel deutscher Regionalpolitik. Betrachtet man den wohl gĂ€ngigsten Indikator zur Messung des Wohlstands, das Bruttoinlandsprodukt pro Kopf, so zeigt sich fĂŒr das Jahr 2017 ein hohes Ausmaß an Ungleichheit. Der Westen Deutschlands ist wirtschaftlich immer noch deutlich stĂ€rker als der Osten. Dieser Unterschied spiegelt sich auch in der Lebenserwartung wider, im SĂŒden Deutschlands leben die Menschen deutlich lĂ€nger als im Norden. Ein Trend zur Angleichung der LebensverhĂ€ltnisse ist nicht zu erkennen. Die regionale Ungleichheit bei Bruttoinlandsprodukt und Arbeitslosigkeit bleibt konstant auf hohem Niveau und bei kommunalen, öffentlichen Dienstleistungen, die BĂŒrger/innen die Teilhabe am gesellschaftlichen Leben ermöglichen, geht die Schere zwischen den Kreisen Deutschlands seit 2010 stark auseinander. VerschĂ€rfend kommt hinzu, dass einige Regionen gleich in mehreren Wohlstandsdimension vergleichsweise schlecht abschneiden. So sind vor allem Regionen in Westdeutschland von hoher Arbeitslosigkeit und hoher kommunaler Verschuldung betroffen. Dies deutet auf die Vielschichtigkeit des Problems regionaler Ungleichheit hin, welche nicht einfach durch ein Ost-West oder Stadt-Land GefĂ€lle zu erklĂ€ren ist. Zur dieser ungĂŒnstigen Ausgangslage ist seit Anfang 2020 erschwerend die globale Pandemie hinzugekommen, welche die regionale Ungleichheit nochmals verschĂ€rft hat

    Longitudinal trajectories of mental health and loneliness for Australian adolescents with-or-without neurodevelopmental disorders: the impact of COVID-19 school lockdowns

    BACKGROUND: The impact of COVID‐19 (SARS‐CoV‐2) pandemic school lockdowns on the mental health problems and feelings of loneliness of adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) is hypothesized to be greater than that of their non‐NDD peers. This two and a half year longitudinal study compared changes in the mental health and loneliness of Western Australian adolescents pre‐COVID‐19 (November 2018 and April 2019), immediately prior to COVID‐19 school lockdowns (March 2020), and post schools reopening (July/August 2020). METHODS: An age‐and‐gender matched sample of 476 adolescents with‐or‐without NDDs completed online assessments for mental health and loneliness. RESULTS: Adolescents with NDDs reported elevated levels of adverse mental health across all four waves of data collection. These young people experienced little change in mental health problems and feelings of loneliness over time, and any increase during school lockdowns returned to, or fell below pre‐COVID‐19 levels once schools reopened. In comparison, adolescents without NDDs experienced significant increases from a low baseline in depression symptoms, externalizing symptoms, feelings of isolation, and having a positive attitude to being alone, and evidenced a significant decline in positive mental wellbeing. Quality of friendships were unaffected by COVID‐19 school lockdowns for all adolescents regardless of NDD status. Of the adolescents with NDDs, those with Attention‐Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder reported a significant increase in positive mental wellbeing following school lockdowns. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents with NDDs emerged relatively unscathed from COVID‐19 school lockdowns and the short term impacts associated with these were not maintained over time. These findings should be considered in the context of this study’s geographical location and the unpredictability of school lockdowns. Learning to live with school lockdowns into the future may be a critical element for further investigation in the context of interventions
