Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Observed Feeding on Chamaesaracha sp. in Eastern Colorado.
Egg, larval, and adult life stages of Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), were observed feeding on or attached to a previously undocumented host plant belonging to the genus Chamaesaracha in eastern Colorado on July 2017. At one site, L. decemlineata were more abundant on Chamaesaracha sp. than the accepted ancestral host plant, Solanum rostratum (Dunal). While future studies should confirm the ancestral status of the observed L. decemlineata and suitability of Chamaesaracha sp. for completion of development, our observations suggest a need for further characterization of the ancestral host range of L. decemlineata

Learning Representations that Support Extrapolation
Extrapolation -- the ability to make inferences that go beyond the scope of
one's experiences -- is a hallmark of human intelligence. By contrast, the
generalization exhibited by contemporary neural network algorithms is largely
limited to interpolation between data points in their training corpora. In this
paper, we consider the challenge of learning representations that support
extrapolation. We introduce a novel visual analogy benchmark that allows the
graded evaluation of extrapolation as a function of distance from the convex
domain defined by the training data. We also introduce a simple technique,
temporal context normalization, that encourages representations that emphasize
the relations between objects. We find that this technique enables a
significant improvement in the ability to extrapolate, considerably
outperforming a number of competitive techniques.Comment: ICML 202
The Development and Internal Evaluation of a Predictive Model to Identify for Whom Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Offers Superior Relapse Prevention for Recurrent Depression Versus Maintenance Antidepressant Medication
Depression is highly recurrent, even following successful pharmacological and/or psychological intervention. We aimed to develop clinical prediction models to inform adults with recurrent depression choosing between antidepressant medication (ADM) maintenance or switching to mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). Using previously published data ( N = 424), we constructed prognostic models using elastic-net regression that combined demographic, clinical, and psychological factors to predict relapse at 24 months under ADM or MBCT. Only the ADM model (discrimination performance: area under the curve [AUC] = .68) predicted relapse better than baseline depression severity (AUC = .54; one-tailed DeLong’s test: z = 2.8, p = .003). Individuals with the poorest ADM prognoses who switched to MBCT had better outcomes compared with individuals who maintained ADM (48% vs. 70% relapse, respectively; superior survival times, z = −2.7, p = .008). For individuals with moderate to good ADM prognoses, both treatments resulted in similar likelihood of relapse. If replicated, the results suggest that predictive modeling can inform clinical decision-making around relapse prevention in recurrent depression
Mechanical Metamaterials with Negative Compressibility Transitions
When tensioned, ordinary materials expand along the direction of the applied
force. Here, we explore network concepts to design metamaterials exhibiting
negative compressibility transitions, during which a material undergoes
contraction when tensioned (or expansion when pressured). Continuous
contraction of a material in the same direction of an applied tension, and in
response to this tension, is inherently unstable. The conceptually similar
effect we demonstrate can be achieved, however, through destabilisations of
(meta)stable equilibria of the constituents. These destabilisations give rise
to a stress-induced solid-solid phase transition associated with a twisted
hysteresis curve for the stress-strain relationship. The strain-driven
counterpart of negative compressibility transitions is a force amplification
phenomenon, where an increase in deformation induces a discontinuous increase
in response force. We suggest that the proposed materials could be useful for
the design of actuators, force amplifiers, micro-mechanical controls, and

Fundamental Concepts of Cyber Resilience: Introduction and Overview
Given the rapid evolution of threats to cyber systems, new management
approaches are needed that address risk across all interdependent domains
(i.e., physical, information, cognitive, and social) of cyber systems. Further,
the traditional approach of hardening of cyber systems against identified
threats has proven to be impossible. Therefore, in the same way that biological
systems develop immunity as a way to respond to infections and other attacks,
so too must cyber systems adapt to ever-changing threats that continue to
attack vital system functions, and to bounce back from the effects of the
attacks. Here, we explain the basic concepts of resilience in the context of
systems, discuss related properties, and make business case of cyber
resilience. We also offer a brief summary of ways to assess cyber resilience of

MYC regulates fatty acid metabolism through a multigenic program in claudin-low triple negative breast cancer
Background: Recent studies have suggested that fatty acid oxidation (FAO) is a key metabolic pathway for the growth of triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs), particularly those that have high expression of MYC. However, the underlying mechanism by which MYC promotes FAO remains poorly understood. Methods: We used a combination of metabolomics, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, and microscopy to elucidate a potential mechanism by which MYC regulates FAO in TNBC. Results: We propose that MYC induces a multigenic program that involves changes in intracellular calcium signalling and fatty acid metabolism. We determined key roles for fatty acid transporters (CD36), lipases (LPL), and kinases (PDGFRB, CAMKK2, and AMPK) that each contribute to promoting FAO in human mammary epithelial cells that express oncogenic levels of MYC. Bioinformatic analysis further showed that this multigenic program is highly expressed and predicts poor survival in the claudin-low molecular subtype of TNBC, but not other subtypes of TNBCs, suggesting that efforts to target FAO in the clinic may best serve claudin-low TNBC patients. Conclusion: We identified critical pieces of the FAO machinery that have the potential to be targeted for improved treatment of patients with TNBC, especially the claudin-low molecular subtype
Predictors of linkage to care following community-based HIV counseling and testing in rural Kenya
Despite innovations in HIV counseling and testing (HCT), important gaps remain in understanding linkage to care. We followed a cohort diagnosed with HIV through a community-based HCT campaign that trained persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) as navigators. Individual, interpersonal, and institutional predictors of linkage were assessed using survival analysis of self-reported time to enrollment. Of 483 persons consenting to follow-up, 305 (63.2%) enrolled in HIV care within 3 months. Proportions linking to care were similar across sexes, barring a sub-sample of men aged 18–25 years who were highly unlikely to enroll. Men were more likely to enroll if they had disclosed to their spouse, and women if they had disclosed to family. Women who anticipated violence or relationship breakup were less likely to link to care. Enrolment rates were significantly higher among participants receiving a PLHA visit, suggesting that a navigator approach may improve linkage from community-based HCT campaigns.Vestergaard Frandse
