    From Student to Teacher: Renegotiating Professional Identities

    This case-study examines how first-year educators renegotiated their teacher identities as they transitioned from pre-service teachers (PSTs) to professionals. Both participants graduated from the same Teacher Education Program (TEP) and conducted their student internship in the same school as their first year of teaching. The results of this study have unique implications on first-year teachers working in the location of their student internships, as they reported isolation, internalized infantilization, and inconsistent identities. The author argues for TEPs to intentionally prepare PSTs for navigating this transition, and challenge preconceived notions of the benefits of student teaching and working in the same K-12 institution

    Orgin of Subgap Features in Transparent Amorphous Oxide Semiconductors

    Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) is a transparent amorphous oxide semiconductor (TAOS) that has shown promise as transparent thin film transistors (TTFTs) in various display applications. Within a-IGZO films, states can form in the band gap that hinder TTFT performance. In order to elucidate the origin of these states, we examined the formation of the subgap states for a-IGZO thin films with various compositions. We observed a positive correlation between the subgap formation and the percentage of oxygen ruling out oxygen deficiencies as a factor in the formation of subgap states. Furthermore, metallic indium crystallites were observed to form for samples grown in oxygen deficient conditions. Our studies reveal that subgap states are due to oxygen with few surrounding metal neighbors and indium with few surrounding oxygen neighbors. The subgap states can be suppressed in a-IGZO (and other TAOS) by careful choice of composition

    Chain‐Growth Polymerization of Aryl Grignards Initiated by a Stabilized NHC‐Pd Precatalyst

    An N‐heterocyclic carbene‐ligated palladium catalyst was discovered to mediate living, chain‐growth polymerizations of both phenylene‐ and thiophene‐based monomers. Polymerization of a fluorene‐based monomer, on the other hand, did not proceed through a living, chain‐growth pathway. Excitingly, block copolymerizations of phenylene and thiophene proceeded via a chain‐growth pathway, regardless of the order of monomer addition. Although some chain termination was observed during these copolymerizations, this pathway could be minimized when the second monomer was added shortly after consumption of the first monomer. These results suggest that the catalyst resting‐state at the end of polymerization is unstable. As a result, modifications to the NHC‐scaffold or the 3‐chloropyridine ligand will be necessary to generate an improved catalyst. A Pd catalyst that can mediate a living, chain‐growth polymerization of π‐conjugated monomers is reported. Using (IPr)Pd(3‐chloropyridine)Cl 2 as a precatalyst, both homopolymers and block copolymers of phenylene‐ and thiophene‐based monomers were prepared.     Tall Cell Carcinoma with Reversed Polarity:Case Report of a Rare Special Type of Breast Cancer and Review of the Literature

    Background: Tall cell carcinoma of the breast with reversed polarity (TCCRP) is a rare type of invasive breast cancer with overlapping features with papillary thyroid carcinoma and a characteristic molecular profile. Few cases have been reported in the literature since the first case was described in 2003. Case presentation: We present the case of a 41-year-old female with a symptomatic left breast lump. Image-guided core biopsy was diagnosed as triple-negative apocrine carcinoma. Surgical excision revealed an invasive carcinoma with solid papillary pattern, nuclei arranged away from the basement membrane (reversed polarity) and luminal eosinophilic colloid-like material. The tumour was GATA3-, CK5-, CK14- and CK7-positive and TTF1-negative. Specialist opinion and the identification of hotspot mutations in the IDH2 p.Arg172 gene via PCR confirmed the diagnosis of TCCRP. Conclusions: TCCRP is a relatively recently recognised papillary epithelial neoplasm with characteristic morphological features and molecular profile. Due to its rarity, TCCRP can be diagnostically challenging, and features can be mistaken for benign and malignant lesions. Accurate diagnosis is important in effective treatment of this indolent malignant triple-negative breast cancer, which carries an excellent prognosis

    Modulation of Asymmetric Division Diversity through Cytokinin and SPEECHLESS Regulatory Interactions in the Arabidopsis Stomatal Lineage

    Coordinated growth of organs requires communication among cells within and between tissues. In plants, leaf growth is largely dictated by the epidermis; here, asymmetric and self-renewing divisions of the stomatal lineage create two essential cell types—pavement cells and guard cells—in proportions reflecting inputs from local, systemic, and environmental cues. The transcription factor SPEECHLESS (SPCH) is the prime regulator of divisions, but whether and how it is influenced by external cues to provide flexible development is enigmatic. Here, we show that the phytohormone cytokinin (CK) can act as an endogenous signal to affect the extent and types of stomatal lineage divisions and forms a regulatory circuit with SPCH. Local domains of low CK signaling are created by SPCH-dependent cell-type-specific activity of two repressive type-A ARABIDOPSIS RESPONSE REGULATORs (ARRs), ARR16 and ARR17, and two secreted peptides, CLE9 and CLE10, which, together with SPCH, can customize epidermal cell-type composition
