    Comparison of the efficacy of lamivudine and telbivudine in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B: a systematic review

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chronic viral hepatitis B remains a global public health concern. Currently, several drugs, such as lamivudine and telbivudine, are recommended for treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis B. However, there are no conclusive results on the comparison of the efficacy of lamivudine (LAM) and telbivudine (LdT) in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To evaluate the comparison of the efficacy of LAM and LdT in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B by a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials, we searched PUBMED (from 1990 to April 2010), Web of Science (from 1990 to April 2010), EMBASE (from 1990 to April 2010), CNKI (National Knowledge Infrastructure) (from 1990 to April 2010), VIP database (from 1990 to April 2010), WANFANG database (from 1990 to April 2010), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Review. At the end of one-year treatment, LdT was better than LAM at the biochemical response, virological response, HBeAg loss, therapeutic response, while less than at the viral breakthrough and viral resistance, but there was no significant difference in the HBeAg seroconversion and HBsAg response. LdT was better than LAM at the HBeAg seroconversion with prolonged treatment to two years.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In summary, LdT was superior in inhibiting HBV replication and preventing drug resistance as compared to LAM for CHB patients. But LdT may cause more nonspecific adverse events and can lead to more CK elevation than LAM. It is thus recommended that the LdT could be used as an option for patients but adverse events, for example CK elevation, must be monitored.</p

    Optimization of Separating Iron and Zinc from BF Gas Sludge by BBD Method

    In order to optimize the thermal parameters of BF gas sludge and realize the good separation of iron and zinc from the sludge, the single factor experiment of heating self reduction of the sludge pellet and that of factor optimization design by BBD (Box-Behnken Design) method in response surface were carried aiming at the problem difficult to separate and recover iron and zinc from the sludge. The metallization rate of iron and that of zinc are used as the evaluation index for the separation of iron and zinc. The results show that the influence of thermal parameters on the reduction and separation of iron and zinc oxides are time > temperature > pelleting pressure; the optimized conditions are1299.95℃, 47.05 min and 8 MPa of pelleting pressure. It is obtained by the optimization test of thermal parameters designed by BBD method that the metallization of iron and zinc reach to 94.67% and 96.08%, respectively, and iron is mainly retained in pellets in the form of metallic iron and Zinc enters into the dust as a gaseous element zinc and then oxidized to ZnO dust. Good separation of iron and zinc is achieved

    Timing of glacier fluctuations and trigger mechanisms in eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau during the late Quaternary

    AbstractIt is highly debated whether glacial advances on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) occurred as a response to temperature cooling, or whether they were forced by an increase in moisture brought by the intensive Indian summer monsoon. We here report a case study investigating this issue. Multiple moraine series in the Yingpu Valley, Queer Shan ranges of the Hengduan Mountains, and eastern QTP, provide an excellent archive for examining the timing and trigger mechanism of glacier fluctuations. Twenty-seven optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) samples of glacial sediments were collected from this valley. The quartz OSL ages show that the moraine series of Y-1, I, M and O were formed during the Late Holocene, Late Glacial, the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 (likely mid-MIS-3). The youngest Y-2 moraines probably formed during the Little Ice Age (LIA). The oldest H moraines formed before MIS-3. We found that glacial advances during the late Quaternary at the Yingpu Valley responded to cold stages or cold events rather than episodes of enhanced summer monsoon and moisture. As a result, glaciers in the monsoonal Hengduan Mountains were mainly triggered by changes in temperature. Millennial time scale temperature oscillations might have caused the multiple glacial advances.</jats:p

    Relative Importance of Land Use and Climate Change on Hydrology in Agricultural Watershed of Southern China

    Quantitative assessment of the impact of land use and climate change on hydrological processes is of great importance to water resources planning and management. The main objective of this study was to quantitatively assess the response of runoff to land use and climate change in the Zhengshui River Basin of Southern China, a heavily used agricultural basin. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to simulate the river runoff for the Zhengshui River Basin. Specifically, a soil database was constructed based on field work and laboratory experiments as input data for the SWAT model. Following SWAT calibration, simulated results were compared with observed runoff data for the period 2006 to 2013. The Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Coefficient (NSE) and the correlation coefficient (R2) for the comparisons were greater than 0.80, indicating close agreement. The calibrated models were applied to simulate monthly runoff in 1990 and 2010 for four scenarios with different land use and climate conditions. Climate change played a dominant role affecting runoff of this basin, with climate change decreasing simulated runoff by &minus;100.22% in 2010 compared to that of 1990, land use change increasing runoff in this basin by 0.20% and the combination of climate change and land use change decreasing runoff by 60.8m3/s. The decrease of forestland area and the corresponding increase of developed land and cultivated land area led to the small increase in runoff associated with land use change. The influence of precipitation on runoff was greater than temperature. The soil database used to model runoff with the SWAT model for the basin was constructed using a combination of field investigation and laboratory experiments, and simulations of runoff based on that new soil database more closely matched observations of runoff than simulations based on the generic Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD). This study may provide an important reference to guide management decisions for this and similar watersheds

    Integrated optical waveguide-based fluorescent immunosensor for fast and sensitive detection of microcystin-LR in lakes: optimization and analysis

    Nowadays, biosensor technologies which can detect various contaminants in water quickly and cost-effectively are in great demand.Herein, we report an integrated channel waveguide-based fluorescent immunosensor with the ability to detect a maximum of 32 contaminants rapidly and simultaneously. In particular, we use waveguide tapers to improve the efficiency of excitation and collection of fluorescent signals in the presence of fluorophore photobleaching in a solid surface bioassay. Under the optimized waveguide geometry, this is the first demonstration of using such a type of waveguide immunosensor for the detection of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in lake water. The waveguide chip was22 activated by (3-Mercaptopropyl)23 trimethoxysilane/N-(4-maleimidobutyryloxy) succinimide (MTS/GMBS) for immobilization of BSA-MC-LR conjugate, which was confirmed to have uniform monolayer distribution by atomic force microscopy. All real lake samples, even those containing MC-LR in the sub-microgram per liter range (e.g. 0.5 μg/L), could be determined by the immunosensor with recovery rates between 84% and 108%, confirming its application potential in the measurement of MC-LR in real water samples
