Are all pastures eligible for conservation? A phytosociological survey of the Sardinian–Corsican Province as a basic tool for the Habitats Directive
A consistent vegetation classification is an essential tool for conservation and monitoring purposes, also for semi-natural habitats such as pastures and hay meadows that are linked to traditional land use and generally considered crucial to maintain biodiversity within agricultural systems. Indeed, these habitats can be strongly affected by land abandonment or agriculture intensification. Despite their importance in the framework of the EU Habitats Directive (43/92/EEC), information on distribution, species composition, and conservation status is still lacking for many regions. To fill these gaps, we investigated from a phytosociological point of view the sheep pastures of the North-Western Sardinian trachy-basaltic sector. Three main communities were described as new: (i) perennial montane (meso-supratemperate) cattle and sheep pastures (Loto alpini- Festucetum morisianae); (ii) mixed (annual and perennial) Mediterranean (lower Thermomediterranean to lower supratemperate) sheep pastures (Ornithogalo corsici-Poetum bulbosae); and (iii) annual ploughed subnitrophilous Mediterranean and Temperate pastures (Cynosuro polybracteati-Vulpietum ligusticae). As the first two host numerous endemic taxa and show a peculiar floristic composition, we assign them a higher conservation value, testified also by their classification in two new syntaxa: Danthonio decumbentis-Caricenion insularis (Molinio-Arrhenatheretea) and Ornithogalo corsici-Trifolienion subterranei (Poetea bulbosae), respectively
We report here a rare case of cutaneous infection due to Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum. The patient presented to the clinical laboratory with a skin ulcer on his left leg. Gram-stained preparation of the purulent secretion revealed the presence of numerous rod-shaped Gram-positive organisms in the absence of any other species. The organism was grown in pure culture on sheep blood agar and was further identified as C. pseudodiphtheriticum using a commercial identification system (API-Coryne, BioMérieux, France). The infection was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin. This case emphasizes the importance of the clinical microbiology laboratory in correctly identifying Gram-positive organisms obtained in pure culture from skin ulcers
Multiple solutions to a magnetic nonlinear Choquard equation
We consider the stationary nonlinear magnetic Choquard equation

Revision of Solar Spicule Classification
Solar spicules are the fundamental magnetic structures in the chromosphere
and considered to play a key role in channelling the chromosphere and corona.
Recently, it was suggested by De Pontieu et al. that there were two types of
spicules with very different dynamic properties, which were detected by space-
time plot technique in the Ca ii H line (3968 A) wavelength from Hinode/SOT
observations. 'Type I' spicule, with a 3-7 minute lifetime, undergoes a cycle
of upward and downward motion; in contrast, 'Type II' spicule fades away within
dozens of seconds, without descending phase. We are motivated by the fact that
for a spicule with complicated 3D motion, the space-time plot, which is made
through a slit on a fixed position, could not match the spicule behavior all
the time and might lose its real life story. By revisiting the same data sets,
we identify and trace 105 and 102 spicules in quiet sun (QS) and coronal hole
(CH), respectively, and obtain their statistical dynamic properties. First, we
have not found a single convincing example of 'Type II' spicules. Secondly,
more than 60% of the identified spicules in each region show a complete cycle,
i.e., majority spicules are 'Type I'. Thirdly, the lifetime of spicules in QS
and CH are 148 s and 112 s, respectively, but there is no fundamental lifetime
difference between the spicules in QS and CH reported earlier. Therefore, the
suggestion of coronal heating by 'Type II' spicules should be taken with
cautions. Subject headings: Sun: chromosphere Sun:transition region Sun:coronaComment: accepted by Ap
Catalisadores metalocênicos suportados para a produção de poliolefinas: revisão das estratégias de imobilização
The inadequacy of strategies used for the heterogeneization of metallocene catalysts is pointed out as one of the main causes of the lack of industrial employability of such polymerization catalysts. The main problems are the necessity of large quantity of MAO (cocatalyst) and the inability to control molecular mass distribution of the polymers. Based on this background, the main strategies for the heterogeneization of metallocenes are here reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of each strategy are presented and discussed on theoretical and practical perspective. Considering the results reported on the different researches, outcomes of heterogeneization strategies are pointed out
Effects of polychlorinated biphenyls in Cd-1 mice : reproductive toxicity and intergenerational transmission
Several studies indicate that in-utero and peri-natal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) induces adverse reproductive effects but it remains unclear whether such effects may be transmitted to subsequent generations. We therefore investigated the association between maternal exposure to PCBs and reproductive health in male and female offspring over three generations.Mouse dams were fed 0, 1, 10, 100 \u3bcg/kg/day of a PCB mixture (101+118) during pregnancy and lactation. PCB levels were measured in the tissues of both dams and offspring.PCB concentrations at all doses investigated were greater in the offspring than in the dams (P 640.0001) confirming that the progeny were exposed as a result of maternal exposure. In F1 offspring, exposure to PCBs resulted in reductions in: i) testis weight (P 640.05) and seminiferous tubule diameter (P 640.05); ii) sperm viability (P 640.0001) and developmental capacity (P 640.05); iii) ovary weight (P 640.05); iv) oocyte developmental capacity (P 640.05), and in v) increased follicular atresia (P 640.0001).In females, adverse effects were observed only in the F1 animals. In contrast, male offspring exhibited reduced sperm viability and altered seminiferous tubule distribution up to the third generation, showing intergenerational transmission. In summary, our data indicate that exposure to PCBs at the time of gonadal sex determination perturbed, significantly, the reproductive physiology of male and female offspring in adulthood. Furthermore, male reproductive deficiencies may be observed in at least two further generations. These findings have significant implications for reproductive health and fertility of animals and humans
The role of rock joint frictional strength in the containment of fracture propagation
The fracturing phenomenon within the reservoir environment is a complex process that is controlled by several factors and may occur either naturally or by artificial drivers. Even when deliberately induced, the fracturing behaviour is greatly influenced by the subsurface architecture and existing features. The presence of discontinuities such as joints, artificial and naturally occurring faults and interfaces between rock layers and microfractures plays an important role in the fracturing process and has been known to significantly alter the course of fracture growth. In this paper, an important property (joint friction) that governs the shear behaviour of discontinuities is considered. The applied numerical procedure entails the implementation of the discrete element method to enable a more dynamic monitoring of the fracturing process, where the joint frictional property is considered in isolation. Whereas fracture propagation is constrained by joints of low frictional resistance, in non-frictional joints, the unrestricted sliding of the joint plane increases the tendency for reinitiation and proliferation of fractures at other locations. The ability of a frictional joint to suppress fracture growth decreases as the frictional resistance increases; however, this phenomenon exacerbates the influence of other factors including in situ stresses and overburden conditions. The effect of the joint frictional property is not limited to the strength of rock formations; it also impacts on fracturing processes, which could be particularly evident in jointed rock masses or formations with prominent faults and/or discontinuities
To see or not to see: investigating detectability of Ganges River dolphins using a combined visual-acoustic survey
Detection of animals during visual surveys is rarely perfect or constant, and failure to account for imperfect detectability affects the accuracy of abundance estimates. Freshwater cetaceans are among the most threatened group of mammals, and visual surveys are a commonly employed method for estimating population size despite concerns over imperfect and unquantified detectability. We used a combined visual-acoustic survey to estimate detectability of Ganges River dolphins (Platanista gangetica gangetica) in four waterways of southern Bangladesh. The combined visual-acoustic survey resulted in consistently higher detectability than a single observer-team visual survey, thereby improving power to detect trends. Visual detectability was particularly low for dolphins close to meanders where these habitat features temporarily block the view of the preceding river surface. This systematic bias in detectability during visual-only surveys may lead researchers to underestimate the importance of heavily meandering river reaches. Although the benefits of acoustic surveys are increasingly recognised for marine cetaceans, they have not been widely used for monitoring abundance of freshwater cetaceans due to perceived costs and technical skill requirements. We show that acoustic surveys are in fact a relatively cost-effective approach for surveying freshwater cetaceans, once it is acknowledged that methods that do not account for imperfect detectability are of limited value for monitoring
