    Backward diode composed of a metallic and semiconducting nanotube

    The conditions necessary for a nanotube junction connecting a metallic and semiconducting nanotube to rectify the current are theoretically investigated. A tight binding model is used for the analysis, which includes the Hartree-Fock approximation and the Green's function method. It is found that the junction has a behavior similar to the backward diode if the gate electrode is located nearby and the Fermi level of the semiconducting tube is near the gap.     Phonon Universal Transmission Fluctuations and Localization in Semiconductor Superlattices with a Controlled Degree of Order

    We study both analytically and numerically phonon transmission fluctuations and localization in partially ordered superlattices with correlations among neighboring layers. In order to generate a sequence of layers with a varying degree of order we employ a model proposed by Hendricks and Teller as well as partially ordered versions of deterministic aperiodic superlattices. By changing a parameter measuring the correlation among adjacent layers, the Hendricks- Teller superlattice exhibits a transition from periodic ordering, with alterna- ting layers, to the phase separated opposite limit; including many intermediate arrangements and the completely random case. In the partially ordered versions of deterministic superlattices, there is short-range order (among any NN conse- cutive layers) and long range disorder, as in the N-state Markov chains. The average and fluctuations in the transmission, the backscattering rate, and the localization length in these multilayered systems are calculated based on the superlattice structure factors we derive analytically. The standard deviation of the transmission versus the average transmission lies on a {\it universal\/} curve irrespective of the specific type of disorder of the SL. We illustrate these general results by applying them to several GaAs-AlAs superlattices for the proposed experimental observation of phonon universal transmission fluctuations.Comment: 16-pages, Revte

    In-plane thermal conductivity of large single crystals of Sm-substituted (Y1x_{1-x}Smx_{x})Ba2_{2}Cu3_{3}O7δ_{7-\delta}

    We have investigated the in-plane thermal conductivity κab(T,H)\kappa_{ab}(T,H) of large single crystals of optimally oxygen-doped (Y1x_{1-x},Smx_{x})Ba2_{2}Cu3_{3}O7δ_{7-\delta} (xx=0, 0.1, 0.2 and 1.0) and YBa2_{2}(Cu1y_{1-y}Zny_{y})3_{3}O7δ_{7-\delta}(yy=0.0071) as functions of temperature and magnetic field (along the c axis). For comparison, the temperature dependence of κab\kappa_{ab} for as-grown crystals with the corresponding compositions are presented. The nonlinear field dependence of κab\kappa_{ab} for all crystals was observed at relatively low fields near a half of TcT_{c}. We make fits of the κ(H)\kappa(H) data to an electron contribution model, providing both the mean free path of quasiparticles 0\ell_{0} and the electronic thermal conductivity κe\kappa_{e}, in the absence of field. The local lattice distortion due to the Sm substitution for Y suppresses both the phonon and electron contributions. On the other hand, the light Zn doping into the CuO 2_{2} planes affects solely the electron component below TcT_{c}, resulting in a substantial decrease in 0\ell_{0} .Comment: 7 pages,4 figures,1 tabl

    Spin Liquid State in an Organic Mott Insulator with Triangular Lattice

    1^{1}H NMR and static susceptibility measurements have been performed in an organic Mott insulator with nearly isotropic triangular lattice, κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_{2}Cu2_{2}(CN)3_{3}, which is a model system of frustrated quantum spins. The static susceptibility is described by the spin SS = 1/2 antiferromagnetic triangular-lattice Heisenberg model with the exchange constant JJ \sim 250 K. Regardless of the large magnetic interactions, the 1^{1}H NMR spectra show no indication of long-range magnetic ordering down to 32 mK, which is four-orders of magnitude smaller than JJ. These results suggest that a quantum spin liquid state is realized in the close proximity of the superconducting state appearing under pressure.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Exopolysaccharides extracted from Parachlorella kessleri inhibit colon carcinoma growth in mice via stimulation of host antitumor immune responses

Plos One, 12(4), 21. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0175064The newly purified extracellular polysaccharides (exopolysaccharides) from Parachlorella kessleri (PCEPS) were evaluated on their antitumor and immunomodulatory effects in cell culture and mouse colon carcinoma peritoneal dissemination model. In two-dimensional cell culture, the PCEPS treatment inhibited cell growth of both murine and human colon carcinoma cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. In contrast, the growth of mouse splenocytes (SPLs) and bone marrow cells (BMCs) were stimulated by the treatment with PCEPS. The treatment with PCEPS also increased specific subpopulations of the cells in BMCs: antigen presenting cells (CD19(+) B cells, 33D1(+) dendritic cells and CD68(+) macrophage) and CD8(+) cytotoxic T cells. In three-dimensional spheroid culture, spheroid growth of CT26 cells co-cultured with HL-60 human neutrophilic promyeloblasts and Jurkat cells (human lymphoblasts), but not THP1 human monocyte/macrophage was significantly attenuated by PCEPS treatment. In a mouse CT26 colon carcinoma peritoneal dissemination model, intraperitoneal injection of PCEPS (10 mg/kg, twice per week) significantly attenuated the growth of CT26 colon carcinoma in syngeneic mice. The present study suggests that PCEPS inhibits colon carcinoma growth via direct cell growth inhibition and a stimulation of the host antitumor immune responses. Taken together, the current study suggests that exopolysaccharides derived from Parachlorella kessleri contain significant bioactive materials that inhibit colon carcinoma growth

    Selective Constraints on Amino Acids Estimated by a Mechanistic Codon Substitution Model with Multiple Nucleotide Changes

    Empirical substitution matrices represent the average tendencies of substitutions over various protein families by sacrificing gene-level resolution. We develop a codon-based model, in which mutational tendencies of codon, a genetic code, and the strength of selective constraints against amino acid replacements can be tailored to a given gene. First, selective constraints averaged over proteins are estimated by maximizing the likelihood of each 1-PAM matrix of empirical amino acid (JTT, WAG, and LG) and codon (KHG) substitution matrices. Then, selective constraints specific to given proteins are approximated as a linear function of those estimated from the empirical substitution matrices. Akaike information criterion (AIC) values indicate that a model allowing multiple nucleotide changes fits the empirical substitution matrices significantly better. Also, the ML estimates of transition-transversion bias obtained from these empirical matrices are not so large as previously estimated. The selective constraints are characteristic of proteins rather than species. However, their relative strengths among amino acid pairs can be approximated not to depend very much on protein families but amino acid pairs, because the present model, in which selective constraints are approximated to be a linear function of those estimated from the JTT/WAG/LG/KHG matrices, can provide a good fit to other empirical substitution matrices including cpREV for chloroplast proteins and mtREV for vertebrate mitochondrial proteins. The present codon-based model with the ML estimates of selective constraints and with adjustable mutation rates of nucleotide would be useful as a simple substitution model in ML and Bayesian inferences of molecular phylogenetic trees, and enables us to obtain biologically meaningful information at both nucleotide and amino acid levels from codon and protein sequences.Comment: Table 9 in this article includes corrections for errata in the Table 9 published in 10.1371/journal.pone.0017244.     Charge ordering in theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2 X materials

    We investigate theoretically charge ordered states on the anisotropic triangular lattice characteristic of the theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2 X materials. Using exact diagonalization studies, we establish that the charge order (CO) pattern corresponds to a ``horizontal'' stripe structure, with ...1100... CO along the two directions with larger electron hopping (p-directions), and ...1010... CO along the third direction (c-direction). The CO is accompanied by co-operative bond dimerizations along all three directions in the highest spin state. In the lowest spin state bonds along the p-directions are tetramerized. Our theory explains the occurence of a charge-induced high temperature transition as well as a spin gap transition at lower temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures, uses jpsj2.cl

    Semigroups with operation-compatible Green’s quasiorders

    We call a semigroup on which the Green’s quasiorder ≤ J (≤ L, ≤ R) is operation-compatible, a ≤ J-compatible (≤ L-compatible, ≤ R-compatible) semigroup. We study the classes of ≤ J-compatible, ≤ L-compatible and ≤ R-compatible semigroups, using the smallest operation-compatible quasiorders containing Green’s quasiorders as a tool. We prove a number of results, including the following. The class of ≤ L-compatible (≤ R-compatible) semigroups is closed under taking homomorphic images. A regular periodic semigroup is ≤ J-compatible if and only if it is a semilattice of simple semigroups. Every negatively orderable semigroup can be embedded into a negatively orderable ≤ J-compatible semigroup

    The Stellar Population of the M31 Spiral Arm Around OB Association A24

    A study of the stellar population of the M31 spiral arm around OB association A24 was carried out based on the photometric data obtained from deep V and JHK imaging. The luminosity function was obtained for -7 <~ Mbol <~ -3.5 by applying the extinction correction corresponding to Av=1 and the bolometric correction BC(K) as an empirical function of (J-K)o. In comparing the observed color-luminosity diagrams with semitheoretical isochrones modified for the dust-shell effects, we found the young population of t <~ 30 Myr with supergiants of Mbol <~ -5, the bulk of the intermediate-age population of t ~ 0.2 - 2.5 Gyr with bright asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of -5 <~ Mbol <~ -4, and old populations of t ~> 3 Gyr with AGB and red giant branch (RGB) stars of Mbol ~> -4. The average star formation rate was estimated to be ~1.8x10^4 M_o/Myr and ~0.7x10^4 M_o/Myr per deprojected disk area of 1 kpc^2 from the number density of B0 V stars around Mv=-4.0 (age ~10 Myr) and the number density of bright AGB stars around Mbol = -4.3 (age ~1 Gyr), respectively. A study of the local variation in the V and the J and H luminosity functions revealed a kind of anticorrelation between the population of the young component and that of the intermediate-age component when subdomains of ~100 pc scales were concerned. This finding suggests that the disk domain around the A24 area experienced a series of star formation episodes alternatively among different subdomains with a timescale of a few spiral passage periods. Brief discussions are given about the interstellar extinction and about the lifetimes of bright AGB stars and the highly red objects (HROs) in the same area.Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, accepted: ApJ, July 1, 199
