A comparative study of Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities in 2D and 3D in tantalum

Driving a shock wave through the interface between two materials with different densities can result in the Richtmyer-Meshkov or Rayleigh-Taylor instability and initial perturbations at the interface will grow. If the shock wave is sufficiently strong, the instability will lead to plastic flow at the interface. Material strength will reduce the amount of plastic flow and suppress growth. While such instabilities have been investigated in 2D, no studies of this phenomena have been performed in 3D on materials with strength. Initial perturbations to seed the hydrodynamic instability were coined into tantalum recovery targets. Two types of perturbations were used, two dimensional (2D) perturbations (hill and valley) and three-dimensional (3D) perturbations (egg crate pattern). The targets were subjected to dynamic loading using the Janus laser at the Jupiter Laser Facility. Shock pressures ranged from 50 GPa up to 150 GPa and were calibrated using VISAR drive targets

    Human chondrocytes in tridimensional culture.

peer reviewedCartilage was taken from the macroscopically normal part of human femoral heads immediately after orthopedic surgical operations for total prothesis consecutive to hip arthrosis. After clostridial collagenase digestion and repeated washings, chondrocytes (10(6) cells) were cultivated in a gyrotory shaker (100 rpm). Under these conditions, cells were kept in suspension and after 3 to 5 d formed a flaky aggregate which, on Day 10, became dense. These chondrocytes were morphologically differentiated: they had a round shape, were situated inside cavities, and were surrounded by a new matrix. Histochemical methods showed the presence of collagen and polysaccharides in cell cytoplasm and in intercellular matrix, and the immunofluorescence method using specific antisera (anticartilage proteoglycans and anti-type II collagen) showed that these two constituents were in intercellular matrix. The measurement of the amounts of proteoglycans (PG) released into culture medium and those present in chondrocyte aggregate (by a specific PG radioimmunoassay) showed a maximum production on Days 3 to 5 of culture, then the production decreased and stabilized (from Day 10 to the end of culture). The observed difference between the amounts of PG in aggregates after 20 d and those after 2 h of culture demonstrated that PG neosynthesis did occur during cultivation. This conclusion was supported by other results obtained by [14C]glucosamine incorporation in chondrocyte aggregates. Moreover, the aggregate fresh weight related to cell number (appreciated by DNA assay) increased significantly with culture duration. Three-dimensional chondrocyte culture represents an interesting model: chondrocytes were differentiated morphologically as well as biosynthetically and synthesized a new cartilage matrix

Southern African Large Telescope Spectroscopy of BL Lacs for the CTA project

In the last two decades, very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy has reached maturity: over 200 sources have been detected, both Galactic and extragalactic, by ground-based experiments. At present, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) make up about 40% of the more than 200 sources detected at very high energies with ground-based telescopes, the majority of which are blazars, i.e. their jets are closely aligned with the line of sight to Earth and three quarters of which are classified as high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects. One challenge to studies of the cosmological evolution of BL Lacs is the difficulty of obtaining redshifts from their nearly featureless, continuum-dominated spectra. It is expected that a significant fraction of the AGN to be detected with the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will have no spectroscopic redshifts, compromising the reliability of BL Lac population studies, particularly of their cosmic evolution. We started an effort in 2019 to measure the redshifts of a large fraction of the AGN that are likely to be detected with CTA, using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). In this contribution, we present two results from an on-going SALT program focused on the determination of BL Lac object redshifts that will be relevant for the CTA observatory

Investigation of hydrodynamic instability growth in copper

Hydrodynamic instability experiments allow access to material properties at strain rates above 10^5 s^(-1). Existing models of material strength are not extensively validated at these strain rates. Recovery instability experiments were developed for copper samples. In conjunction with simulations using the hydrocode CTH, these experiments constrain the strength of copper at strain rates near 10^7 s^(-1) providing an alternative technique to validate material properties at these strain rates. Mesh sensitivity in the present simulations contributed large uncertainty to the strength inferred from recovery instability experiments
