    Biaxial magnetic alignment in twinned REBa[2]Cu[3]O[y]superconductors

    Biaxial magnetic alignment of REBa[2]Cu[3]O[y] (RE123, RE = Y, Nd, Sm, Dy, and Er) superconductor powders containing twin microstructures was demonstrated. Appropriate choice of RE effectively improved the degrees of in-plane and c-axis orientation in RE123 powder samples aligned under modulated rotating magnetic fields at room temperature. From the relationship between the magnetic field strength and the degrees of orientation, it is concluded that heavy RE ions induced the improvement of the in-plane magnetic anisotropies in RE123 grains with twin microstructures

    We compare the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the hole-doped Cu-O chains in PrBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7 (Pr123) and in PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8 (Pr124). While, in Pr123, a dispersive feature from the chain takes a band maximum at kbk_b (momentum along the chain) ∌\sim π/4\pi/4 and loses its spectral weight around the Fermi level, it reaches the Fermi level at kbk_b ∌\sim π/4\pi/4 in Pr124. Although the chains in Pr123 and Pr124 are approximately 1/4-filled, they show contrasting behaviors: While the chains in Pr123 have an instability to charge ordering, those in Pr124 avoid it and show an interesting spectral feature of a metallic coupled-chain system.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to be published in PR

    Compression induced shear damage in brittle solids by scattered microcracking

    Failure observation and numerical analysis were conducted to understand how shear damage develops in brittle solids under biaxial compression. A biaxial compression often induces shear damaged in brittle solids, which is preceded by a formation of huge number of array cracks. Cracks in the array appeared gradually as applied compression increased. They were almost similar in shape; gently curved but were possible to approximate a troop of straight cracks almost parallel to each other without loss of essential characteristics. Under a uniaxial compression, a brittle material tends to fail exhibiting a crack growth almost parallel to the loading axis. In this situation, the crack propagates rather in a stable fashion since the stress intensity factor at crack tip generally decreases with crack extension. Under a biaxial compression, however, such a stable crack growth is strongly inhibited. Consequently, an array of microcracks often appears as a presage of the macroscopic shear failure. A mechanism of the appearance of damaged zone with increase of applied compression was discussed using a scattered cracking model. It was found that each crack composing the damaged zone has a possibility to open due to crack-to-crack interaction and a localized tensile stress appeared both in the interior and in the exterior of the damaged zone. The localized tension appeared in the interior of the damaged zone may increase a crack density, while that appeared in the exterior of the damaged zone would bring an enlargement of the damaged zone

    We report a systematic study on the effect of partial substitution of Sc3+^{3+} by Ti4+^{4+} in Sr2_{2}ScFeAsO3_{3}, Ca2_{2}ScFeAsO3_{3} and Sr3_{3}Sc2_{2}Fe2_{2}As2_{2}O5_{5} on their electrical properties. High level of doping results in an increased carrier concentration and leads to the appearance of superconductivity with the onset of Tc_{c} up to 45 K.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 2 new figure

    Search for CP Violation in D Meson Decays to phi pi+

    We search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed charged D meson decays by measuring the difference between the CP violating asymmetries for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays D+ -> K+K-pi+ and the Cabibbo-favored decays Ds -> K+K-pi+ in the K+K- mass region of the phi resonance. Using 955/fb of data collected with the Belle detector we obtain A_CP(D+ -> phi pi+) = (+0.51 +- 0.28 +- 0.05)%. The measurement improves the sensitivity of previous searches by more than a factor of five. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.Comment: submitted to PR

    First study of \eta_c, \eta(1760) and X(1835) production via \eta'\pi^+\pi^- final states in two-photon collisions

    The invariant mass spectrum of the \eta' \pi^+ \pi^- final state produced in two-photon collisions is obtained using a 673 fb^{-1} data sample collected in the vicinity of the \Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a clear signal of the \eta_c and measure its mass and width to be M(\eta_c)=(2982.7 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.2(syst) +- 0.3(model)) MeV/c^2 and \Gamma(\eta_c) = (37.8^{+5.8}_{-5.3}(stat) +- 2.8(syst) +- 1.4(model)) MeV/c^2. The third error is an uncertainty due to possible interference between the \eta_c and a non-resonant component. We also report the first evidence for \eta(1760) decay to \eta' \pi^+ \pi^-; we find two solutions for its parameters, depending on the inclusion or not of the X(1835), whose existence is of marginal significance in our data. From a fit to the mass spectrum using coherent X(1835) and \eta(1760) resonant amplitudes, we set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the product \Gamma_{\gamma\gamma} \BR (\eta' \pi^+ \pi^-) for the X(1835).Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, submitted to PR

    Measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries in B→D∗∓π±B \to D^{*\mp} \pi^{\pm} decays using a partial reconstruction technique

    We report results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in B→D∗∓π±B \to D^{*\mp}\pi^{\pm} decays based on a data sample containing 657 {\times} 10610^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider at the ΄(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance. We use a partial reconstruction technique, wherein signal B→D∗∓π±B \to D^{*\mp}\pi^{\pm} events are identified using information only from the fast pion from the B decay and the slow pion from the subsequent decay of the D∗∓D^{*\mp}, where the former (latter) corresponds to D∗+(D∗−)D^{*+} (D^{*-}) final states. We obtain CP violation parameters S+=+0.061±0.018(stat)±0.012(syst)S^+ = +0.061 \pm 0.018(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.012(\mathrm{syst}) and S−=+0.031±0.019(stat)±0.015(syst)S^- = +0.031 \pm 0.019(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.015(\mathrm{syst}).Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physical Review D (RC

    Search for leptonic decays of D0 mesons

    We search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays D0\to mu+mu- and D0\to e+e-, and for the lepton-flavor violating decays D0\to e\pm mu\mp using 660 fb^-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find no evidence for any of these decays. We obtain significantly improved upper limits on the branching fractions: B(D0\to mu+mu-)<1.4x10-7, B(D0\to e+e-)<7.9x10-8, and B(D0\to e+mu-)+B(D0\to mu+e-)<2.6x10-7 at 90% confidence level.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
