    Heterogeneity Impacts of Farmers’ Participation in Payment for Ecosystem Services Based on the Collective Action Framework

    Payments for ecosystem services (PES) are designed to reduce the impact of human activities on eco-sensitive areas. PES programs often adopt economic-incentive and command-control strategies. Increasing the enthusiasm of farmers’ participation is crucial for the sustainability of PES programs and ecosystem restoration. The watershed ecological compensation in Xin’an River Basin is the first horizontal ecological compensation pilot in China. In this study, economic-incentive strategy and command-control strategies in living and farming are implemented simultaneously to improve water quality. Under the collective action framework, we analyze the drivers of farmers’ participation in three concurrent strategies using hierarchical linear models (HLM). The results show: (1) Overall, 81.79%, 76.26%, and 79.11% of farmers are willing to participate in economic-incentive strategy, command-control strategy in living, and command-control strategy in farming, respectively, while 18.21%, 23.74%, and 20.89% are from the village level. (2) Among statistically significant (p < 0.01) factors at the farmer level, social trust (β = 0.305), and social participation (β = 0.134) have positive effects on the economic-incentive strategy; the number of communication and entertainment equipment has a positive effect on the willingness to participate in command-control strategy in living (β = 0.287) and command-control strategy in farming (β = 0.336). (3) At the village level, village characteristics have a direct impact on the farmers’ willingness to participate in strategies. Village woodland area is positively correlated with strategies participation. In addition, village characteristics play a moderating role by influencing farmers’ sustainable livelihood capital. We conclude that different concurrent strategies and collective actions need to be considered in the design of PES programs, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas, which can enrich the theory of collective action and the connotation of PES

    Leakage current simulations of Low Gain Avalanche Diode with improved Radiation Damage Modeling

    We report precise TCAD simulations of IHEP-IME-v1 Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) calibrated by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Our setup allows us to evaluate the leakage current, capacitance, and breakdown voltage of LGAD, which agree with measurements' results before irradiation. And we propose an improved LGAD Radiation Damage Model (LRDM) which combines local acceptor removal with global deep energy levels. The LRDM is applied to the IHEP-IME-v1 LGAD and able to predict the leakage current well at -30 ^{\circ}C after an irradiation fluence of Φeq=2.5×1015 neq/cm2 \Phi_{eq}=2.5 \times 10^{15} ~n_{eq}/cm^{2}.     SYT1-associated neurodevelopmental disorder: a case series.

    Synaptotagmin 1 (SYT1) is a critical mediator of fast, synchronous, calcium-dependent neurotransmitter release and also modulates synaptic vesicle endocytosis. This paper describes 11 patients with de novo heterozygous missense mutations in SYT1. All mutations alter highly conserved residues, and cluster in two regions of the SYT1 C2B domain at positions Met303 (M303K), Asp304 (D304G), Asp366 (D366E), Ile368 (I368T) and Asn371 (N371K). Phenotypic features include infantile hypotonia, congenital ophthalmic abnormalities, childhood-onset hyperkinetic movement disorders, motor stereotypies, and developmental delay varying in severity from moderate to profound. Behavioural characteristics include sleep disturbance and episodic agitation. Absence of epileptic seizures and normal orbitofrontal head circumference are important negative features. Structural MRI is unremarkable but EEG disturbance is universal, characterized by intermittent low frequency high amplitude oscillations. The functional impact of these five de novo SYT1 mutations has been assessed by expressing rat SYT1 protein containing the equivalent human variants in wild-type mouse primary hippocampal cultures. All mutant forms of SYT1 were expressed at levels approximately equal to endogenous wild-type protein, and correctly localized to nerve terminals at rest, except for SYT1M303K, which was expressed at a lower level and failed to localize at nerve terminals. Following stimulation, SYT1I368T and SYT1N371K relocalized to nerve terminals at least as efficiently as wild-type SYT1. However, SYT1D304G and SYT1D366E failed to relocalize to nerve terminals following stimulation, indicative of impairments in endocytic retrieval and trafficking of SYT1. In addition, the presence of SYT1 variants at nerve terminals induced a slowing of exocytic rate following sustained action potential stimulation. The extent of disturbance to synaptic vesicle kinetics is mirrored by the severity of the affected individuals' phenotypes, suggesting that the efficiency of SYT1-mediated neurotransmitter release is critical to cognitive development. In summary, de novo dominant SYT1 missense mutations are associated with a recognizable neurodevelopmental syndrome, and further cases can now be diagnosed based on clinical features, electrophysiological signature and mutation characteristics. Variation in phenotype severity may reflect mutation-specific impact on the diverse physiological functions of SYT1

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals &lt;1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Sub-central city’s green innovation in regional integration: Can it be a bridgehead even if it is far away?

    The green innovation level of sub-center cities in regional integration must be addressed in promoting high-quality economic development. Therefore, governments and policymakers should pay attention to its positive effects. In the Yangtze River Delta integration context, this paper uses Hefei as an example sub-center city to assess its green innovation in two indicators, green total factor productivity (GTFP) and the number of green patent grants (GPG). The first step is to measure GTFP using the SBM-ML model. The second step is to evaluate the policy effects of sub-center city experiences on green innovation using Synthetic Control Methods. The empirical findings of this study indicate that sub-centers play an essential role in promoting green innovation even if they are located outside the core area of an urban agglomeration. Additionally, the placebo trial confirmed the reliability and significance of the results. This paper proposes some policy recommendations to realize global green innovation based on these findings

    Design and Analysis of Brake-by-Wire Unit Based on Direct Drive Pump–Valve Cooperative

    Aiming at the requirements of distributed braking and advanced automatic driving, a brake-by-wire unit based on a direct drive pump–valve cooperative is proposed. To realize the wheel cylinder pressure regulation, the hydraulic pump is directly driven by the electromagnetic linear actuator coordinates with the active valve. It has the advantages of rapid response and no deterioration of wheel side space and unsprung mass. Firstly, by analyzing the working characteristics and braking performance requirements of the braking unit, the key parameters of the system are matched. Then, in order to ensure the accuracy of the simulation model, the co-simulation model of the brake unit is established based on the Simulink-AMESim co-simulation platform. Then, the influence law of key parameters on the control performance is analyzed. Finally, the experimental platform of the brake unit is established. The accuracy of the co-simulation model and the feasibility of the brake-by-wire unit based on direct drive pump–valve cooperative are verified through the pressure control experiment and ABS simulation, which shows that the braking unit has good dynamic response and steady-state tracking effect

    Multi‐Time Scale Variations in Atlantic Niño and a Relative Atlantic Niño Index

    Abstract Atlantic Niño is a leading mode of climate variability in the tropical Atlantic Ocean with important regional impacts. Tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs) connected with Atlantic Niño exhibit notable multi‐time scale variations, including a quasi‐linear warming trend and sub‐annual to interdecadal variability associated with different physical processes. Contrasting the tropical Pacific SST associated with the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which has a weak trend and quasi‐periodic oscillatory variability with a period of 2–7 years, the ATL3 index, the primary index for monitoring the Atlantic Niño, has no dominant time scale, that is likely responsible for its low prediction skills. Following the same spirit as the relative Niño3.4 index, we demonstrate that a relative ATL3 index, which is defined as the difference between the raw ATL3 index and the global SST anomaly, provides distinct advantages for monitoring the sub‐annual‐to‐interdecadal variations for Atlantic Niño in real time
