Distraction-Aware Feature Learning for Human Attribute Recognition via Coarse-to-Fine Attention Mechanism
Recently, Human Attribute Recognition (HAR) has become a hot topic due to its
scientific challenges and application potentials, where localizing attributes
is a crucial stage but not well handled. In this paper, we propose a novel deep
learning approach to HAR, namely Distraction-aware HAR (Da-HAR). It enhances
deep CNN feature learning by improving attribute localization through a
coarse-to-fine attention mechanism. At the coarse step, a self-mask block is
built to roughly discriminate and reduce distractions, while at the fine step,
a masked attention branch is applied to further eliminate irrelevant regions.
Thanks to this mechanism, feature learning is more accurate, especially when
heavy occlusions and complex backgrounds exist. Extensive experiments are
conducted on the WIDER-Attribute and RAP databases, and state-of-the-art

PMP22 exon 4 deletion causes ER retention of PMP22 and a gain-of-function allele in CMT1E
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether predicted fork stalling and template switching (FoSTeS) during mitosis deletes exon 4 in peripheral myelin protein 22 KD (PMP22) and causes gainâofâfunction mutation associated with peripheral neuropathy in a family with CharcotâMarieâTooth disease type 1E. METHODS: Two siblings previously reported to have genomic rearrangements predicted to involve exon 4 of PMP22 were evaluated clinically and by electrophysiology. Skin biopsies from the proband were studied by RTâPCR to determine the effects of the exon 4 rearrangements on exon 4 mRNA expression in myelinating Schwann cells. Transient transfection studies with wildâtype and mutant PMP22 were performed in Cos7 and RT4 cells to determine the fate of the resultant mutant protein. RESULTS: Both affected siblings had a sensorimotor dysmyelinating neuropathy with severely slow nerve conduction velocities (<10 m/sec). RTâPCR studies of Schwann cell RNA from one of the siblings demonstrated a complete inâframe deletion of PMP22 exon 4 (PMP22Î4). Transfection studies demonstrated that PMP22Î4 protein is retained within the endoplasmic reticulum and not transported to the plasma membrane. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm that that FoSTeSâmediated genomic rearrangement produced a deletion of exon 4 of PMP22, resulting in expression of both PMP22 mRNA and protein lacking this sequence. In addition, we provide experimental evidence for endoplasmic reticulum retention of the mutant protein suggesting a gainâofâfunction mutational mechanism consistent with the observed CMT1E in this family. PMP22Î4 is another example of a mutated myelin protein that is misfolded and contributes to the pathogenesis of the neuropathy
A study on the factors influencing the turnover of knowledge employees in state-owned enterprises: taking CZ company as a case
Under the background of knowledge economy, the competition among enterprises is gradually condensed into that for human resources. However, the turnover rate of employee in stated-owned enterprises is actually getting higher and higher, particularly, the knowledge staff. CZ Company is chosen as a case to examine the factors influencing knowledge employee turnover in stated-owned enterprises. After data analysis, it is found that promotional opportunity, job stress, distributive justice, autonomy have a significant positive impact on employee turnover. Some suggestions are proposed to decrease the employee turnover in stated-owned enterprises in this paper
Evaluating emotional labor from a career management perspective
Emotional labor claims its significance as the key indicator both of the psychological health of contemporary employees, and the productivity of service-based businesses depending upon genuine emotional input of employees. By far, research on emotional labor of employees in an organizational context is still lacking. This study aims to explore the relationships among emotional labor, organizational support, career competences and career commitment to investigate how emotional labor interacts with the organizational context and affects the career management of the employee. Data were collected from a sample of 387 frontline employees working at two luxury hotel brands in China. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to estimate the relationships among the constructs. It is demonstrated by the findings that organizational support mediates positively on emotional labor, which exerts positive influences on career competences and career commitment. Sound handling of emotional labor, boosted by a supportive organizational environment, has been ascertained to positively predict long-term career paths of the employees at the company. This study provides insights into how the tourism and hospitality industry can optimize the functions of emotional labor for in enhancing service quality and customer satisfaction, as well as promoting the psychological well-being of the employees
Promoting Shewanella Bidirectional Extracellular Electron Transfer for Bioelectrocatalysis by Electropolymerized Riboflavin Interface on Carbon Electrode
The extracellular electron transfer (EET) that connects the intracellular metabolism of electroactive microorganisms to external electron donors/acceptors, is the foundation to develop diverse microbial electrochemical technologies. For a particular microbial electrochemical device, the surface chemical property of an employed electrode material plays a crucial role in the EET process owing to the direct and intimate biotic-abiotic interaction. The functional modification of an electrode surface with redox mediators has been proposed as an effectual approach to promote EET, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we investigated the enhancement of electrochemically polymerized riboflavin interface on the bidirectional EET of Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 for boosting bioelectrocatalytic ability. An optimal polyriboflavin functionalized carbon cloth electrode achieved about 4.3-fold output power density (âź707 mW/m2) in microbial fuel cells and 3.7-fold cathodic current density (âź0.78 A/m2) for fumarate reduction in three-electrode cells compared to the control, showing great increases in both outward and inward EET rates. Likewise, the improvement was observed for polyriboflavin-functionalized graphene electrodes. Through comparison between wild-type strain and outer-membrane cytochrome (MtrC/UndA) mutant, the significant improvements were suggested to be attributed to the fast interfacial electron exchange between the polyriboflavin interface with flexible electrochemical activity and good biocompatibility and the outer-membrane cytochromes of the Shewanella strain. This work not only provides an effective approach to boost microbial electrocatalysis for energy conversion, but also offers a new demonstration of broadening the applications of riboflavin-functionalized interface since the widespread contribution of riboflavin in various microbial EET pathways together with the facile electropolymerization approach
Sex differences in patients with COVID-19: a retrospective cohort study and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND: Accumulated evidence revealed that male was much more likely to higher severity and fatality by SARS-CoV-2 infection than female patients, but few studies and meta-analyses have evaluated the sex differences of the infection and progression of COVID-19 patients.
AIM: We aimed to compare the sex differences of the epidemiological and clinical characteristics in COVID-19 patients; and to perform a meta-analysis evaluating the severe rate, fatality rate, and the sex differences of the infection and disease progression in COVID-19 patients.
METHODS: We analyzed clinical data of patients in Changchun Infectious Hospital and Center, Changchun, Northeast China; and searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library without any language restrictions for published articles that reported the data of sex-disaggregated, number of severe, and death patients on the confirmed diagnosis of adult COVID-19 patients.
RESULTS: The pooled severe rate and fatality rate of COVID-19 were 22.7% and 10.7%. Male incidence in the retrospective study was 58.1%, and the pooled incidence in male was 54.7%.
CONCLUSION: The pooled severe rate in male and female of COVID-19 was 28.2% and 18.8%, the risky of severe and death was about 1.6folds higher in male compared with female, especially for older patients (> 50 y)
CYP-omega-hydroxylation-dependent metabolites of arachidonic acid inhibit the basolateral 10pS chloride channel in the rat thick ascending limb
Metabolites of arachidonic acid influence sodium chloride (NaCl) transport in the thick ascending limb. Because a 10pS Cl channel is the major type of chloride channel in the basolateral membrane of this nephron segment, we explored the effect of arachidonic acid on this channel in cell-attached patches. Addition of 5Îźmol arachidonic acid significantly decreased channel activity (a product of channel number and open probability) while linoleic acid had no effect. To determine if this was mediated by acachidonic acid per se or by its metabolites, we measured channel activity in the presence of the cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin, the selective lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid, and the cytochrome P-450 (CYP)-Ď-hydroxylation inhibitor 17-octadecynoic acid. Neither cyclooxygenase nor lipoxygenase inhibition had an effect on basal chloride channel activity; further they failed to abolish the inhibitory effect of arachidonate on the 10pS channel. However, inhibition of CYP-Ď-hydroxylation completely abolished the effect of arachidonic acid. The similarity of the effects of 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) and arachidonic acid suggests that the effect of arachidonic acid was mediated by CYP-Ď-hydroxylation-dependent metabolites. We conclude that arachidonic acid inhibits the 10pS chloride channel in the basolateral membrane of the medullary thick ascending limb, an effect mediated by the CYP-Ď-hydroxylation-dependent metabolite 20-HETE
The prognostic and predictive value of homologous recombination deficiency status in patients with advanced stage epithelial ovarian carcinoma after first-line platinum-based chemotherapy
ObjectiveHomologous recombination (HR) comprises series of interrelated pathways that repair double-stranded DNA breaks and inter-strand crosslinks. It provides support for DNA replication to recover stalled or broken replication forks. Compared with homologous recombination proficiency (HRP), cancers with homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) are more likely to undergo cell death when treated with DNA-damaging agents, such as platinum agents, and have better disease control.MethodsPatients diagnosed with stage III/IV ovarian cancer, early stages with recurrence, who received adjuvant chemotherapy after debulking surgery, and who also had known HR status were eligible.ResultsForty-four patients were included, with 21 in the HRD group (including 8 with germline mutations) and 23 in the HRP group. The HRD group was composed predominantly of serous carcinoma (95.2%), while mucinous (n=3) and clear cell (n=1) cases were all found in the HRP group. Stage III/IV disease was 66.7% and 91.3% in HRD and HRP groups, respectively (p=0.064). Patients who were optimally debulked to no residual disease was 90.0% and 72.7% (p=0.243), respectively. Late line use of PARP inhibitors was 33.3% and 17.4% (p=0.303). Median PFS was 22.5 months (95% CI, 18.5 - 66.6) and 21.5 months (95% CI, 18.3-39.5) (p=0.49) in HRD and HRP respectively. Median platinum free interval (PFI) was 15.8 months (95% CI 12.4-60.4) and 15.9 months (95% CI 8.3-34.1) (p=0.24), respectively. Median OS was 88.2 months (95% CI 71.2-NA) and 49.7 months (95% CI 35.1-NA) (p=0.21). The PFS of the patients with germline BRCA mutations (n=5) was 54.3 months (95% CI 23.1-NA) and 21.5 months (95% CI 18.3-39.5) in the HRP group (p=0.095); the PFI difference was 47.7 months (95% CI 17.6-NA) in the BRCA mutation group, and 15.9 months (95% CI 12.4-60.4) in HRP, showing statistical significance (p=0.039); while the median OS was NA and 49.7 months (95% CI 35.1-NA) respectively (p=0.051). When adding two additional patients with somatic BRCA mutations to the germline BRCA mutation carriers, the median OS is NA (95% CI 73, NA) versus 49.7 months (95% CI 35.1, NA) for HRP (p=0.045).ConclusionsHRD status was not associated with longer PFS or PFI in advanced ovarian cancer who received first line adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy. Its role as a prognostic marker for overall survival is suggested, particularly in the subgroup with germline and somatic BRCA mutations
