    In situ Synthesis of Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Chitosan Hydrogels as a Reaction Field: Effect of Cross-linking Density

    Magnetic iron oxides such as magnetite and γ-hematite have attracted considerable attention as thermoseeds for hyperthermia treatment because of their ability to generate heat under an alternating magnetic field. Control of the particle size and their combination with biocompatible polymers are expected to be beneficial for optimization of the nanoparticles. These processes can be accomplished through the synthesis of magnetite in gels, as the network structure of the polymer gel can control the grain growth of the magnetite. However, the effect of the cross-linking density of the gels remains unclear. In this study, we synthesized magnetic iron oxides in situ in chitosan hydrogels with different cross-linking densities and examined the crystalline structure and heat generation under alternating magnetic field. The crystalline phase and amount of magnetite were observed to be dependent on the cross-linking density of the gel, and the heat generation of the nanoparticles was governed by their crystalline structure and particle size rather than solely the amount of formed iron oxide

    Power System Development of the AGU Remote Innovative CubeSat Alert System -2 – ARICA-2

    We present the power system development of the 2U CubeSat, AGU Remote Innovative CubeSat Alert system -2(ARICA-2). The main goal of the ARICA-2 project is to demonstrate the real-time alert system of transient astronomical sources using commercial satellite network devices. 1U CubeSat ARICA was launched in November 2021. However, we have not been able to send and receive the data at this point. Therefore, we started developing 2U CubeSat ARICA-2, which is an improved version of ARICA, in April 2022. One of the possible causes of the communication problem of ARICA is the power system, such as a negative power budget or a failure in the installation of the inhibit switches. ARICA-2 is upsized from 1U to 2U to ensure a sufficient power generation and is equipped with improved inhibit switches. The calculation of power consumption and simulation of power supply on orbit have been finished. We confirmed the performance of our Electric Power System (EPS) and the health of the installed batteries. We are currently in the EM development phase with the goal of launching in Japanese fiscal year 2024

    Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are transient astronomical phenomena that emit enormous amounts of energy in electromagnetic waves, mainly in the gamma-ray range, for several seconds to tens of seconds. GRB observations are challenging because of the difficulty in predicting the location and time of occurrence and its extremely short duration. Therefore, it is necessary to notify about the discovery in space and to conduct follow-up observations by researchers. The AGU Remote Innovative CubeSat Alert system-2 (ARICA-2) has been developed to demonstrate a new alert system using commercial satellite network services. ARICA-2 uses SONY’s Spresense as its onboard computer (OBC). We manufactured the special board to attach two Spresenses as a redundancy of the OBC system.     Overview and Status of AGU Remote Innovative Cubesat Alert System-2 on 2023

    We present the overview of the 2U CubeSat, AGU Remote Innovative Cubesat Alert system - 2 (ARICA-2). ARICA-2 was selected as a feasibility study phase of the JAXA-Small Satellite Rush Program (JAXA-SMASH) and the JAXA Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-4 project in 2022. The main goal of ARICA-2 is to demonstrate the real-time alert system of transient astronomical sources, such as gamma-ray bursts, using commercial satellite network services. The first 1U CubeSat ARICA, which had the same mission goal as ARICA-2, was successfully launched in 2021 by the JAXA’s Epsilon rocket No.5. However, communication with ARICA has yet to be established due to severe hardware issues. Therefore, ARICA-2 is the re-challenging mission of ARICA. ARICA-2 has several different features compared to ARICA. First, a transceiver using amateur radio frequency is added to the commercial satellite network devices to communicate directly from the ground. Second, ARICA-2 uses Sony’s low-power board Spresense as an onboard computer. Third, the attitude control system using magnetorquer is installed to establish better communication with the commercial network satellites. Fourth, the size of a gamma-ray detector is 70 mm x 70 mm x 10 mm, which is larger by a factor of 200 in volume compared to ARICA, to enhance the detection rate of gamma-ray bursts. We plan to develop the engineering model (EM) in 2023 and perform thermal vacuum and vibration tests on the EM. We report the current status and a prospect of ARICA-2

    Evaluation of FilmArray respiratory panel multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay for detection of pathogens in adult outpatients with acute respiratory tract infection

    Although viruses are the major pathogen that causes upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) and acute bronchitis, antibiotics have been prescribed. This was a prospective observational study in influenza epidemics that enrolled adult outpatients who visited a hospital with respiratory tract infection symptoms. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of FilmArray respiratory panel (RP). Fifty patients were enrolled. FilmArray RP detected the pathogens in 28 patients. The common pathogens were influenza virus (n = 14), respiratory syncytial virus (n = 6), and human rhinovirus (n = 6). Of the 14 patients with influenza virus, 6 were negative for the antigen test. The physicians diagnosed and treated the patients without the result of FilmArray in this study. Of the patients with positive FilmArray RP, 9 were treated with antibiotics; however, bacteria were detected in only 3 patients. By implementing FilmArray RP, URTI and acute bronchitis would be precisely diagnosed, and inappropriate use of antibiotics can be reduced

    Investigating the Influence of Various Stormwater Runoff Control Facilities on Runoff Control Efficiency in a Small Catchment Area

    Urbanization causes an increase in the flood discharge because of the infiltration capacity. Furthermore, extreme precipitation events have been an increasing concern for many regions worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the influence of different outflow control facilities on runoff reduction in a small watershed. We focused on the soil-improvement technology and rainwater tanks as outflow control facilities and conducted a runoff calculation using a rainfall event of a magnitude that is likely to occur once in a hundred years. The calculation showed that the soil-improvement technology reduced runoff during long-term continuous rainfall, whereas in a concentrated short-term rainfall event, a significant difference in the runoff reduction effect between rainfall tanks of various volumes was observed. Since effective countermeasures for runoff reduction differ depending on the rainfall distribution pattern, we suggested both facilities for storing initial rainfall and initiating countermeasures for penetration improvement over the long term

    岐阜県における埋甕の様相 : 埋甕の施工率について

    Publisher奈良" 縄文時代中期後葉に多く見られる埋甕(住居内埋設土器)風習は、東北や信州を中心に広がり、今回検討を行った岐阜県にも伝播している。  本稿は、埋甕の集成を行い、中期後葉の住居にどれほどの確率で埋甕が施工されるか検討したものである。その結果、埋甕は従来指摘されているように、岐阜県内では中期中葉から出現し、中期後葉にピークを迎える。ただし、最も盛栄する唐草文3段階においても施工率は約50%であった。  唐草文3段階の埋甕が急激に増加する時期は、大木8b式の西進・南進によって大柄渦巻文が唐草文系時に施文される時期と重なり、大木式の影響が埋甕の伝播にも関連している可能性を指摘した。
