Urine and plasma levels of uroguanylin and its molecular forms in renal diseases. Uroguanylin activates the intestinal and possibly the renal guanylate cyclase C receptor, and stimulates Cl− secretion. We developed a sensitive radioimmunoassay (RIA) for human uroguanylin and measured its concentration in the urine and plasma. Twenty-four-hour urinary excretion of immunoreactive (ir-) uroguanylin for persons with a high-salt diet (10 g/day) was 137.8 ± 14.4 pmol/day, significantly higher than that for persons with a low-salt diet (7 g/day, 95.1 ± 16.3 pmol/day, P < 0.05). There were significantly positive correlations between the urinary excretion of ir-uroguanylin and Na+, Cl−, K+ or cyclic GMP (cGMP). We demonstrated the presence of messenger RNA of guanylate cyclase C in the medulla of human kidney. The concentration of plasma ir-uroguanylin significantly correlated with that of serum creatinine (r = 0.71, P < 0.001). Biologically active uroguanylin-16 accounted for 99% of the endogenous uroguanylin molecules in normal urine and 60% in plasma, the remainder being the 10kDa precursor. The precursor content increased in the urine and plasma as the severity of renal impairment increased. These findings suggest that bioactive uroguanylin-16 is involved in the regulation of electrolyte homeostasis and that the kidney participates in the metabolism and excretion of uroguanylin

Somatic chromosomal translocation between Ewsr1 and Fli1 loci leads to dilated cardiomyopathy in a mouse model

A mouse model that recapitulates the human Ewing's sarcoma-specific chromosomal translocation was generated utilizing the Cre/loxP-mediated recombination technique. A cross between Ewsr1-loxP and Fli1-loxP mice and expression of ubiquitous Cre recombinase induced a specific translocation between Ewsr1 and Fli1 loci in systemic organs of both adult mice and embryos. As a result Ewsr1-Fli1 fusion transcripts were expressed, suggesting a functional Ews-Fli1 protein might be synthesized in vivo. However, by two years of age, none of the Ewsr1-loxP/Fli1-loxP/CAG-Cre (EFCC) mice developed any malignancies, including Ewing-like small round cell sarcoma. Unexpectedly, all the EFCC mice suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy and died of chronic cardiac failure. Genetic recombination between Ewsr1 and Fli1 was confirmed in the myocardial tissue and apoptotic cell death of cardiac myocytes was observed at significantly higher frequency in EFCC mice. Moreover, expression of Ews-Fli1 in the cultured cardiac myocytes induced apoptosis. Collectively, these results indicated that ectopic expression of the Ews-Fli1 oncogene stimulated apoptotic signals, and suggested an important relationship between oncogenic signals and cellular context in the cell-of-origin of Ewing's sarcoma

The Digital Natural History Museum of Hiroshima University is a cluster of web sites for dissemination and practical use of educational and research resources for lifelong learning as well as school education in collaboration with laboratories and centers of Hiroshima University, Japan. The museum site includes contents on biological, environmental and earth sciences, mainly in Japanese with some English, especially bryophytes and the world heritage listed Itsukushima (Miyajima) Island, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Online site access has increased since 2015. The museum site is now transferring the html based system to the MediaWiki system which is a free and open-source wiki software. For regional studies we plan to expand significantly the content of available resources to enable greater use and ease of access through information and communication technology (ICT)

No-touch pylorus-resecting pancreatoduodenectomy can reduce postoperative complications even in low volume center

Purposes : Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) was performed for 6 periampullary cancer patients by using methods verified by quality randomized controlled trials (RCT) in a low-volume center (LVC). The purpose of this study was to verify the clinical results. Methods : No-touch pylorus-resecting pancreatoduodenectomy (PrPD), antecolic gastrojejunostomy, pancreatico-jejunostomy with a lost stent tube to the main pancreatic duct, and early removal of a prophylactic drain were performed. Results : The drain could be removed 4 days after operation, and no pancreatic fistula was observed in all cases. Solid food could be started on POD4 after removing the drain. Furthermore, postoperative systemic chemotherapy could be started earlier. Conclusion : Although we have only a few PD cases a year in our institution, PD can be conducted safely without complications by using the methods verified by quality RCTs

A student counseling room was established in university A ten years ago and activities first reported in 2008. This paper reports the recent activities of the student counseling room. Compared to when it first opened, student counseling systems has become more organized. Nowadays showed national average in comparison with the statistical document. Systematic cooperation has begun to well organized in recent years, allowing for more effective and efficient support. In addition, a trial programme of lectures and a lifestyle orientation targeting new students has begun. These will be reviewed in future literature since at present there is not enough information to assess the programmes

Purposes : The purpose of this study was to verify the outcome of the emergency one stage resection and anastomosis procedure for patients with obstructed colorectal cancer. Methods : An emergency one stage resection and anastomosis procedure was performed for 40 patients with obstructive colorectal cancer. The outcome was verified and compared dividing into two groups. 17 patients under the age of 70 in (Group A), 23 patients 70 years and over in (Group B). Results : The operative mortality rate in both groups was 0%. As a result, postoperative complications were not significantly different between the two groups. The overall survival rate after a 5-year period in both groups was 41.8%, regarding all patients and the survival curves for the two groups, was not significantly different. The 5 year survival rate in stage II or III showed no differences between the two groups. Conclusion : The one-stage resection and anastomosis of the large bowel could be applied safely to emergency patients, which in turn allows for excellent shortterm operative results in both groups mentioned. This particular procedure should be positively enforced, even in elderly patients in their 70’s
