    Flow of Rarefied Vapour past a Liquid Sphere

    This paper deals with the low Mach numbers flow of a rarefied vapour past a liquid sphere accompanied with condensation and evaporation at its surface. The linearized Bhatnager-Gross-Krook(B-G-K} equation is used for the analysis, and from it the integral equations of the density, temperature and flow velocities are derived. These integral equations are solved numerically over a wide range of the Knudsen number covering from the slip flow to the nearly free molecular flow. The drag on the sphere is also calculated and is compared with that of previous work

    Examination of Optimum Construction Area for Appropriate Thickness in Polyurethane Waterproofing Construction

    Polyurethane waterproofing membranes are constructed at building sites by applying liquid material to substrate. The membrane thickness is related to the durability of the waterproof material, so quality control during construction is important. However, the membrane thickness is likely to be unstable because it is affected by various factors, such as the environment, substrate conditions, method of waterproofing material application, and construction skills. Therefore, a reduction in thickness variation is extremely important to secure the quality of the waterproofing membrane. To examine which construction conditions can ensure a uniform and appropriate thickness, we examined the combination of allocation method of the suitable construction area and application tools as an example of process control during construction. The construction area width and length were important, and a comparatively uniform and appropriate thickness could be ensured, when construction was carried out over an area with a 1.4-m width and length of 5.15 m by using the trowel and squeegee

    Near-infrared and Mid-infrared Spectroscopy with the Infrared Camera (IRC) for AKARI

    The Infrared Camera (IRC) is one of the two instruments on board the AKARI satellite. In addition to deep imaging from 1.8-26.5um for the pointed observation mode of the AKARI, it has a spectroscopic capability in its spectral range. By replacing the imaging filters by transmission-type dispersers on the filter wheels, it provides low-resolution (lambda/d_lambda ~ 20-120) spectroscopy with slits or in a wide imaging field-of-view (approximately 10'X10'). The IRC spectroscopic mode is unique in space infrared missions in that it has the capability to perform sensitive wide-field spectroscopic surveys in the near- and mid-infrared wavelength ranges.     Coronary angioscopic findings 9 months after everolimus-eluting stent implantation compared with sirolimus-eluting stents

    AbstractObjectivesWe assessed angioscopic findings after everolimus-eluting stents (EES) implantation, compared with sirolimus-eluting stents (SES).BackgroundCoronary angioscopy (CAS) provides an opportunity to assess neointimal coverage over stent struts, thrombus, and plaque color by direct visualization. CAS is a useful tool for evaluating stent struts after drug-eluting stent implantation. Angioscopic findings after EES implantation have not been reported before.MethodsWe performed CAS in 23 patients who were treated with EES and 41 patients with SES. CAS was performed 8.5 months after stent implantation. We assessed neointimal coverage, thrombus, and plaque color. We classified neointimal coverage in 4 grades: grade 0=struts were completely exposed; grade 1=struts were visible with dull light reflexion; grade 2=there was no light reflexion from slightly visible struts; grade 3=struts were completely covered.ResultsThere was no significant difference in minimum, maximum, dominant grade of neointimal coverage, and heterogeneity index between EES and SES. Thrombus was less frequently observed in EES than SES (4% vs 29%, p=0.02). When we divided study patients into acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or stable angina pectoris (SAP), there was a tendency toward less thrombus in EES than SES, in both ACS and SAP. Maximum color grade of the plaques was less advanced in EES than SES (p<0.01). Yellow plaques of grade 2 or 3 were less frequent in EES than SES (35% vs 76%, p<0.01).ConclusionsThis study suggested that EES were associated with lower risk of thrombus formation than SES

    Retinol Supplements Antiviral Action of Interferon in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C: A Prospective Pilot Study

    Sustained virologic response with peg-interferon and ribavirin combination therapy for 48 weeks is still inadequate. Our study examined whether short-term administration of retinol clinically influences the anti-viral activity of interferon early during interferon and ribavirin combination therapy. The control group received 6 MIU of interferon α-2b every day for two weeks and then 3 times a week for 22 weeks intramuscularly plus 600 mg or 800 mg per day of ribavirin orally for 24 weeks. The retinol group, in addition to above treatment, received retinol 30,000 units per day orally for 3 weeks from one week before the start of interferon α-2b plus ribavirin combination therapy. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA negativity rate at 1 week after the end of interferon α-2b and ribavirin combination therapy was 46.7% (28/60) for the retinol group and 31.7% (19/60) for the control group, which was significantly higher for the retinol group. The level of serum HCV RNA in the retinol group was significantly lower at 1 week after beginning treatment as compared to the control group (p<0.01). Furthermore, serum 2,5'AS protein at 1 week after beginning treatment was significantly higher in the retinol group (p = 0.0002). The results suggest that retinol supplement increases the antiviral effect of interferon α-2b plus ribavirin only during the administration of IFN α-2b, ribavirin and retinol in patients with chronic hepatitis C

    The Effect of Viscosity of Oral Moisturizers and Residual Ridge Form on the Retention Force of Maxillary Complete Dentures

    Aim: To study the effects of viscosity of oral moisturizers and residual ridge form on theretention force of maxillary complete dentures.Methods: Thirty-five maxillary edentulous participants were recruited. Three types of oralmoisturizers with different viscosities, artificial saliva, and denture adhesive were used. Thesewere applied between the intaglio surface of the denture and basal seat mucosa. The centralincisor was loaded 45° upward to the occlusal plane. The force needed to dislodge the denturewas measured using a digital force gauge. Dental impressions of the polished surfaces andintaglio surfaces of the maxillary complete dentures were obtained. Then, duplicate dentureswere cast using auto polymerizing acrylic resin. The buccolingual molar residual ridge form wasassessed using the dental impressions. The duplicate denture was used to measure the positionalrelationship of the central incisor edge, anterior residual ridge crest, and posterior border ofdentures. The effect of residual ridge form on retention force was analyzed.Results: The gel-type oral moisturizer showed significantly greater retention than theother types (P < .05). The retention force and buccolingual molar residual ridge form were notcorrelated. As the ratio of the distance from the central incisor to the anterior residual ridgecrest and the distance from the anterior residual ridge crest to the posterior denture borderincreased, retention force decreased (r = -0.352; P < .01).Conclusion: The results indicate that the retention force of dentures is affected by oralmoisturizer viscosity and the relative position of the anterior residual ridge crest

    The subjective postural vertical (SPV) reflects gravity perception when the eyes are closed. Changes in the SPV on both the frontal and sagittal planes occur in response to neurological disorders and aging; however, these changes on the diagonal plane are unclear. Here we examined test–retest reliability (n=16) of and age-related changes (n=38) in the SPVon the diagonal plane. Subjects sat on an electrical vertical board (EVB), which was used to measure the SPVon the diagonal plane. An experimenter controlled and moved the EVB seat at a constant speed on the diagonal plane and measured the seat’s tilt using a digital inclinometer when subjects verbally reported that they had reached a true vertical position. Measurement was performed for eight trials, and the mean (tilt direction) and standard deviation (variability) were calculated. To determine test–retest reliability, the same experimenter repeatedly measured the SPV 1 week later. To assess age-related changes, tilt direction and variability were compared between the young (n=20) and elderly (n=18) groups. Test–retest reliability on the right and left diagonal planes was 0.61 or more. Moreover, tilt direction on the right diagonal plane – but not on the left diagonal plane – indicated a significant diagonally backward deviation in the elderly group compared with that in the young group.Variability was significantly higher in the elderly group on both planes. SPV measurement on the diagonal plane was indicated, and age-related changes were identified.
