    Direct observation of layer-stacking and oriented wrinkles in multilayer hexagonal boron nitride

    Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has long been recognized as an ideal substrate for electronic devices due to its dangling-bond-free surface, insulating nature and thermal/chemical stability. Therefore, to analyse the lattice structure and orientation of h-BN crystals becomes important. Here, the stacking order and wrinkles of h-BN are investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is experimentally confirmed that the layers in the h-BN flakes are arranged in the AA' stacking. The wrinkles in a form of threefold network throughout the h-BN crystal are oriented along the armchair direction, and their formation mechanism was further explored by molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings provide a deep insight about the microstructure of h-BN and shed light on the structural design/electronic modulations of two-dimensional crystals.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    TGF-β1 Down-Regulation of NKG2D/DAP10 and 2B4/SAP Expression on Human NK Cells Contributes to HBV Persistence

    The mechanism underlying persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains unclear. We investigated the role of innate immune responses to persistent HBV infection in 154 HBV-infected patients and 95 healthy controls. The expression of NKG2D- and 2B4-activating receptors on NK cells was significantly decreased, and moreover, the expression of DAP10 and SAP, the intracellular adaptor proteins of NKG2D and 2B4 (respectively), were lower, which then impaired NK cell-mediated cytotoxic capacity and interferon-γ production. Higher concentrations of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) were found in sera from persistently infected HBV patients. TGF-β1 down-regulated the expression of NKG2D and 2B4 on NK cells in our in vitro study, leading to an impairment of their effector functions. Anti-TGF-β1 antibodies could restore the expression of NKG2D and 2B4 on NK cells in vitro. Furthermore, TGF-β1 induced cell-cycle arrest in NK cells by up-regulating the expression of p15 and p21 in NK cells from immunotolerant (IT) patients. We conclude that TGF-β1 may reduce the expression of NKG2D/DAP10 and 2B4/SAP, and those IT patients who are deficient in these double-activating signals have impaired NK cell function, which is correlated with persistent HBV infection

    Tirofiban for Stroke without Large or Medium-Sized Vessel Occlusion

    The effects of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitor tirofiban in patients with acute ischemic stroke but who have no evidence of complete occlusion of large or medium-sized vessels have not been extensively studied. In a multicenter trial in China, we enrolled patients with ischemic stroke without occlusion of large or medium-sized vessels and with a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of 5 or more and at least one moderately to severely weak limb. Eligible patients had any of four clinical presentations: ineligible for thrombolysis or thrombectomy and within 24 hours after the patient was last known to be well; progression of stroke symptoms 24 to 96 hours after onset; early neurologic deterioration after thrombolysis; or thrombolysis with no improvement at 4 to 24 hours. Patients were assigned to receive intravenous tirofiban (plus oral placebo) or oral aspirin (100 mg per day, plus intravenous placebo) for 2 days; all patients then received oral aspirin until day 90. The primary efficacy end point was an excellent outcome, defined as a score of 0 or 1 on the modified Rankin scale (range, 0 [no symptoms] to 6 [death]) at 90 days. Secondary end points included functional independence at 90 days and a quality-of-life score. The primary safety end points were death and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage. A total of 606 patients were assigned to the tirofiban group and 571 to the aspirin group. Most patients had small infarctions that were presumed to be atherosclerotic. The percentage of patients with a score of 0 or 1 on the modified Rankin scale at 90 days was 29.1% with tirofiban and 22.2% with aspirin (adjusted risk ratio, 1.26; 95% confidence interval, 1.04 to 1.53, P = 0.02). Results for secondary end points were generally not consistent with the results of the primary analysis. Mortality was similar in the two groups. The incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage was 1.0% in the tirofiban group and 0% in the aspirin group. In this trial involving heterogeneous groups of patients with stroke of recent onset or progression of stroke symptoms and nonoccluded large and medium-sized cerebral vessels, intravenous tirofiban was associated with a greater likelihood of an excellent outcome than low-dose aspirin. It is necessary to cultivate Chinese HE students' critical thinking in their learning in terms of promoting students' abilities of analyzing and solving problems, constructivist learning, deep learning and self-regulated learning. Chinese HE students tend to show a positive disposition towards critical thinking in the aspect of being deep and flexible learners, whereas negative in autonomy and open-mindedness. It seems urgent for Chinese HE authorities to both introduce critical thinking in the curriculum and offer relevant teacher training programs.div_BaMpub4963pu

    Path Planning Optimization for Driverless Vehicle in Parallel Parking Integrating Radial Basis Function Neural Network

    To optimize performances such as continuous curvature, safety, and satisfying curvature constraints of the initial planning path for driverless vehicles in parallel parking, a novel method is proposed to train control points of the Bézier curve using the radial basis function neural network method. Firstly, the composition and working process of an autonomous parking system are analyzed. An experiment concerning parking space detection is conducted using an Arduino intelligent minicar with ultrasonic sensor. Based on the analysis of the parallel parking process of experienced drivers and the idea of simulating a human driver, the initial path is planned via an arc-line-arc three segment composite curve and fitted by a quintic Bézier curve to make up for the discontinuity of curvature. Then, the radial basis function neural network is established, and slopes of points of the initial path are used as input to train and obtain horizontal ordinates of four control points in the middle of the Bézier curve. Finally, simulation experiments are carried out by MATLAB, whereby parallel parking of driverless vehicle is simulated, and the effects of the proposed method are verified. Results show the trained and optimized Bézier curve as a planning path meets the requirements of continuous curvature, safety, and curvature constraints, thus improving the abilities for parallel parking in small parking spaces

    Application of Machine Learning for Predicting Anastomotic Leakage in Patients with Gastric Adenocarcinoma Who Received Total or Proximal Gastrectomy

    Anastomotic leakage is a life-threatening complication in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma who received total or proximal gastrectomy, and there is still no model accurately predicting anastomotic leakage. In this study, we aim to develop a high-performance machine learning tool to predict anastomotic leakage in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma received total or proximal gastrectomy. A total of 1660 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma patients who received total or proximal gastrectomy in a large academic hospital from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2019 were investigated, and these patients were randomly divided into training and testing sets at a ratio of 8:2. Four machine learning models, such as logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, and XGBoost, were employed, and 24 clinical preoperative and intraoperative variables were included to develop the predictive model. Regarding the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy, random forest had a favorable performance with an AUC of 0.89, a sensitivity of 81.8% and specificity of 82.2% in the testing set. Moreover, we built a web app based on random forest model to achieve real-time predictions for guiding surgeons’ intraoperative decision making

    Why Do Drivers’ Collision Avoidance Maneuvers Tend to Cause SUVs to Sideslip or Rollover on Horizontal Curve and Grade Combinations?—An Analysis of the Causes Based on a Modified Multibody Dynamics Model

    The extent to which drivers’ collision avoidance maneuvers affect the safety margins of sideslip and rollover is not captured by road geometric design theory. To quantify the effects of drivers’ collision avoidance maneuvers on the safety margins of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) on horizontal curve and grade combinations, a modified 8-degree-of-freedom multibody model based on SUVs was developed. The model was then used to calculate the design safety margins of sideslip and rollover for steady states and the actual safety margins for collision avoidance maneuvers. Subsequently, the design safety margin reduction rate (the difference between the design and actual safety margins divided by the design safety margin) was calculated and used to assess the safety margins. The results showed that the safety margins of SUVs were significantly reduced by braking, lane changing, and lane changing with braking. The marginal effects indicated that the greater the deceleration and the shorter the lane change duration, the greater the effect on the safety margins, particularly the sideslip safety margin. Furthermore, when the SUV was driven at 80 km·h−1 on grades with a horizontal curve radius of 270 m and 400 m, the sideslip safety margin with emergency braking (deceleration over −4.5 m·s−2) was reduced by 71% and 21%, and the rollover safety margin was reduced by 11% and 5%, respectively. Under these conditions, an emergency lane change (lane change duration less than 2 s) caused the SUV to sideslip and reduced the rollover safety margin by 47% (curve radius 270 m) and 45% (curve radius 400 m). Therefore, drivers’ collision avoidance maneuvers are a factor that cannot be neglected in alignment design
