Band structures of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimensional lattices
[[abstract]]We derive the effective Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimensional lattices and investigate the band structures numerically. Due to the anisotropic and the long-ranged dipole-dipole interaction in addition to the known contact interaction, we elucidate the possibility of modifying the band structures by changing the alignment of the dipoles with the axial direction. With the considerations of the transverse parts and the practical physical parameters of a cigar-shaped trap, we show the possibility to stabilize an attractive condensate simply by adjusting the orientation angle of dipoles. Some interesting Bloch waves at several particle current densities are identified for possible experimental observations.[[fileno]]2030136010045[[fileno]]2030136010046[[department]]電機工程ĺ¸
Soliton transverse instabilities in nonlocal nonlinear media
We analyze the transverse instabilities of spatial bright solitons in
nonlocal nonlinear media, both analytically and numerically. We demonstrate
that the nonlocal nonlinear response leads to a dramatic suppression of the
transverse instability of the soliton stripes, and we derive the asymptotic
expressions for the instability growth rate in both short- and long-wave
approximations.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Crescent Waves in Optical Cavities
We theoretically and experimentally generate stationary crescent surface
solitons pinged to the boundary of a micro-structured vertical cavity surface
emission laser by using the intrinsic cavity mode as a background potential.
Instead of a direct transition from linear to nonlinear cavity modes, we
demonstrate the existence of a symmetry-breaking crescent waves without any
analogs in the linear limit. Our results provide an alternative and general
method to control lasing characteristics as well as to study optical surface
waves.Comment: 3 figure
E-Beam Patterned Gold Nanodot Arrays on Optical Fiber Tips for Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Biochemical Sensing
Electron beam lithography (EBL) was used to directly pattern periodic gold nanodot arrays on optical fiber tips. Localized surface plasmon resonance of the E-beam patterned gold nanodot arrays on optical fiber tips was utilized for biochemical sensing. The advantage of the optical fiber based localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensors is the convenience to work with and work in harsh environments. An optical fiber tip LSPR refractive index sensor of 196 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) sensitivity has been demonstrated. The affinity sensing property of the fiber tip sensor was demonstrated using biotin/streptavidin as the receptor/analyte. The detection limit for streptavidin was determined to be 6 pM
Self-consistent field theory of polarized BEC: dispersion of collective excitation
We suggest the construction of a set of the quantum hydrodynamics equations
for the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where atoms have the electric dipole
moment. The contribution of the dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) to the Euler
equation is obtained. Quantum equations for the evolution of medium
polarization are derived. Developing mathematical method allows to study effect
of interactions on the evolution of polarization. The developing method can be
applied to various physical systems in which dynamics is affected by the DDI.
Derivation of Gross-Pitaevskii equation for polarized particles from the
quantum hydrodynamics is described. We showed that the Gross-Pitaevskii
equation appears at condition when all dipoles have the same direction which
does not change in time. Comparison of the equation of the electric dipole
evolution with the equation of the magnetization evolution is described.
Dispersion of the collective excitations in the dipolar BEC, either affected or
not affected by the uniform external electric field, is considered using our
method. We show that the evolution of polarization in the BEC leads to the
formation of a novel type of the collective excitations. Detailed description
of the dispersion of collective excitations is presented. We also consider the
process of wave generation in the polarized BEC by means of a monoenergetic
beam of neutral polarized particles. We compute the possibilities of the
generation of Bogoliubov and polarization modes by the dipole beam.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with
