Unconditionally secure one-way quantum key distribution using decoy pulses
We report here a complete experimental realization of one-way decoy-pulse
quantum key distribution, demonstrating an unconditionally secure key rate of
5.51 kbps for a 25.3 km fibre length. This is two orders of magnitudes higher
than the value that can be obtained with a non-decoy system. We introduce also
a simple test for detecting the photon number splitting attack and highlight
that it is essential for the security of the technique to fully characterize

Photovoltaic Oscillations Due to Edge-Magnetoplasmon Modes in a Very-High Mobility 2D Electron Gas
Using very-high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs 2D electron Hall bar samples, we have
experimentally studied the photoresistance/photovoltaic oscillations induced by
microwave irradiation in the regime where both 1/B and B-periodic oscillations
can be observed. In the frequency range between 27 and 130 GHz we found that
these two types of oscillations are decoupled from each other, consistent with
the respective models that 1/B oscillations occur in bulk while the
B-oscillations occur along the edges of the Hall bars. In contrast to the
original report of this phenomenon (Ref. 1) the periodicity of the
B-oscillations in our samples are found to be independent of L, the length of
the Hall bar section between voltage measuring leads.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
X-ray properties of the Parkes sample of flat-spectrum radio sources: dust in radio-loud quasars?
We investigate the X-ray properties of the Parkes sample of flat-spectrum
radio sources using data from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and archival pointed
PSPC observations. In total, 163 of the 323 sources are detected. For the
remaining 160 sources 2 sigma upper limits to the X-ray flux are derived. We
present power-law photon indices for 115 sources, which were either determined
with a hardness ratio technique or from direct fits to pointed PSPC data. For
quasars, the soft X-ray photon index is correlated with redshift and with radio
spectral index. Webster et al. (1995) discovered many sources with unusually
red optical continua among the quasars of this sample and interpreted this
result in terms of extinction by dust. Although the X-ray spectra in general do
not show excess absorption, we find that low-redshift optically red quasars
have significantly lower soft X-ray luminosities on average than objects with
blue optical continua. The difference disappears for higher redshifts, as is
expected for intrinsic absorption by cold gas associated with the dust.
Alternative explanations are briefly discussed. We conclude, however, that dust
does play an important role in some of the radio-loud quasars with red optical

The magnetoresistance and Hall effect in CeFeAsO: a high magnetic field study
The longitudinal electrical resistivity and the transverse Hall resistivity
of CeFeAsO are simultaneously measured up to a magnetic field of 45T using the
facilities of pulsed magnetic field at Los Alamos. Distinct behaviour is
observed in both the magnetoresistance Rxx({\mu}0H) and the Hall resistance
Rxy({\mu}0H) while crossing the structural phase transition at Ts \approx 150K.
At temperatures above Ts, little magnetoresistance is observed and the Hall
resistivity follows linear field dependence. Upon cooling down the system below
Ts, large magnetoresistance develops and the Hall resistivity deviates from the
linear field dependence. Furthermore, we found that the transition at Ts is
extremely robust against the external magnetic field. We argue that the
magnetic state in CeFeAsO is unlikely a conventional type of spin-density-wave
