    EFFECT OF ATTACHlNG STRING DAMPERS ON VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF A TENNIS RACKET

    The "damper", a small device attached to the tennis racket string-bed, is commonly used by tennis players with little scientific support for its functions. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of damper attachment on racket vibration characteristics. Two accelerometers attached at different locations were used to measure racket handle and string-bed vibration patterns with and without a damper. Ball-racket impacts were controlled by releasing the ball abve the racket for producing consistent impact intensity at four different locations. Although amplitudes of spring-bed acceleration could be reduced by the damper, vibration on the racket handle was not affected by the damper

    Leadership, Regulatory Focus and Project Performance

    Leadership is one critical factor of effective teamwork, such as information system (IS) projects. The mission of project leaders is to motivate followers and create an effective working environment that allows project teams to effectively meet the predefined goals. However, based on regulatory focus theory, a team may strive to the optional situation (promotion focus) or try to avoid not meeting the minimum requirements (prevention). The aim of this paper is to explore the effect of leadership styles (transformational and transactional) on the regulatory focus of one team (promotion and prevention), and investigate the relationship between regulatory focus and project team performance. Based on data collected from 154 IS professionals, we found that transformational leadership is associated with promotion focus and transactional leadership leads to prevention focus. Furthermore, while promotion focus orientated teams can perform effectively, prevention focus oriented teams are less efficient. Implications toward academia and practitioners are provided

    The Role of Formal and Social Control in Information Security Behaviors

    The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of formal and social control on in-role and extra-role security behaviors. Following past studies, we reexamine the effect of formal control on behaviors. Based on social control theory, we further hypothesize the effect of social control on security behaviors. Data collected from 259 members of IS departments confirmed our hypotheses that both formal control and social control generate effects on both in-role and extrarole security behaviors.     Team Quotients, Resilience, and Performance of Software Development Projects

    Past studies have examined actions and strategies that software project teams can take to reduce the negative impact of uncertainties, such as changing requirements. Software development project teams often have to be flexible to follow the pre-defined plans and strive to meet project goals. Sometimes uncertainty may go extreme to temporarily slow projects down and set project teams into reduced productivity. Project teams should be resilient to recover from the reduce productivity condition and move forward toward predefined goals. This study focuses on understanding the importance of team resilience for software project teams and exploring the antecedents of team resilience. Specifically, we investigate the impacts of intelligence and emotional quotient on team resilience capability, the extent to which project team can recover from the impediment and move forward.     Exploring the Role of Dynamic Capabilities of Information System Development Project Teams

    The increasingly dynamic external environment serves as one risk factor which undermines information system development (ISD) project performance. This highlights the importance of ISD teams having certain capabilities to respond to the external variations. In this study, we proposed that ISD teams can better react to external changes and achieve goals if they have sufficient dynamic capabilities: a combination of market/environment orientation, absorptive capacity, coordination capability and collective mind. We also proposed that a team has stronger dynamic capabilities when team members possess complementary expertise and know the expertise and tasks of others. In addition, after examining the moderating effect of knowing the expertise and tasks of others on the relationship between complementary expertise and team dynamic capabilities, we found that complementary expertise can substitute for knowing the location of expertise and complements knowing the tasks of others. Based on the results, implications for academia and practitioners are also provided

    Obstacle-Resistant Deployment Algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks

    [[abstract]]Node deployment is an important issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Sensor nodes should be efficiently deployed in a predetermined region in a low-cost and high-coverage-quality manner. Random deployment is the simplest way to deploy sensor nodes but may cause unbalanced deployment and, therefore, increase hardware costs and create coverage holes. This paper presents the efficient obstacle-resistant robot deployment (ORRD) algorithm, which involves the design of a node placement policy, a serpentine movement policy, obstacle-handling rules, and boundary rules. By applying the proposed ORRD, the robot rapidly deploys a near-minimal number of sensor nodes to achieve full sensing coverage, even though there exist unpredicted obstacles with regular or irregular shapes. Performance results reveal that ORRD outperforms the existing robot deployment mechanism in terms of power conservation and obstacle resistance and, therefore, achieves better deployment performance.[[incitationindex]]SC

    A STUDY OF THE INFLUENCES OF KNOWLEDGE BOUNDARY SPANNING ON PROJECT PERFORMANCE IN INFORMATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

    Information system development (ISD) is a knowledge intensive process, and a socialize cross-disciplines collaboration that brings up innovations and creates a competitive advantage for the organization. However, different layers of knowledge boundaries (syntactic, semantic, pragmatic) arise with the knowledge diversity of the ISD project and further lowers the project performance and product quality. To solve the problems, we will follow a construct development methodology to empirically identify the critical knowledge boundary spanning (KBS) processes, roles and objects for different layers of knowledge boundary, examine their influences to the effectiveness of corresponding KBS, and further assess the direct and moderating relationships from KBS effectiveness to project performance and product quality through a questionnaire survey. For academic applications, we not only split up the layers of KBS effectiveness and examine their direct and moderating effects to ISD performance but also offer categorized KBS activities under a formal construct development methodology for future studies. For practical implications, we offer a model for ISD team members to refer to for solving their knowledge boundary issues and increase their project performance and product quality
