Vacuum fluctuations and Brownian motion of a charged test particle near a reflecting boundary
We study the Brownian motion of a charged test particle coupled to
electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations near a perfectly reflecting plane boundary.
The presence of the boundary modifies the quantum fluctuations of the electric
field, which in turn modifies the motion of the test particle. We calculate the
resulting mean squared fluctuations in the velocity and position of the test
particle. In the case of directions transverse to the boundary, the results are
negative. This can be interpreted as reducing the quantum uncertainty which
would otherwise be present.Comment: 8 pages, no figures, discussions added, version to appear in PR
A magnetically driven origin for the low luminosity GRB 170817A associated with GW170817
The gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A associated with GW170817 is subluminous and
subenergetic compared with other typical short GRBs. It may be due to a
relativistic jet viewed off-axis, or a structured jet, or cocoon emission.
Giant flares from magnetars may possibly be ruled out. However, the luminosity
and energetics of GRB 170817A is coincident with that of magnetar giant flares.
After the coalescence of the binary neutron star, a hypermassive neutron star
may be formed. The hypermassive neutron star may have magnetar-strength
magnetic field. During the collapse of the hypermassive neutron star, the
magnetic field energy will also be released. This giant-flare-like event may
explain the the luminosity and energetics of GRB 170817A. Bursts with similar
luminosity and energetics are expected in future neutron star-neutron star or
neutron star-black hole mergers.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, accepted in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysic
Zero-bias anomalies in electrochemically fabricated nanojunctions
A streamlined technique for the electrochemical fabrication of metal
nanojunctions (MNJs) between lithographically defined electrodes is presented.
The first low-temperature transport measurements in such structures reveal
suppression of the conductance near zero-bias. The size of the zero-bias
anomaly (ZBA) depends strongly on the fabrication electrochemistry and the
dimensions of the resulting MNJ. We present evidence that the nonperturbative
ZBA in atomic-scale junctions is due to a density of states suppression in the
leads.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Magnetoresistance of atomic-scale electromigrated nickel nanocontacts
We report measurements of the electron transport through atomic-scale
constrictions and tunnel junctions between ferromagnetic electrodes. Structures
are fabricated using a combination of e-beam lithography and controlled
electromigration. Sample geometries are chosen to allow independent control of
electrode bulk magnetizations. As junction size is decreased to the single
channel limit, conventional anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) increases in
magnitude, approaching the size expected for tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR)
upon tunnel junction formation. Significant mesoscopic variations are seen in
the magnitude and sign of the magnetoresistance, and no evidence is found of
large ballistic magnetoresistance effects.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Taking a “Deep Dive”: What Only a Top Leader Can Do
Unlike most historical accounts of strategic change inside large firms, empirical research on strategic management rarely uses the day-to-day behaviors of top executives as the unit of analysis. By examining the resource allocation process closely, we introduce the concept of a deep dive, an intervention when top management seizes hold of the substantive content of a strategic initiative and its operational implementation at the project level, as a way to drive new behaviors that enable an organization to shift its performance trajectory into new dimensions unreachable with any of the previously described forms of intervention. We illustrate the power of this previously underexplored change mechanism with a case study, in which a well-established firm overcame barriers to change that were manifest in a wide range of organizational routines and behavioral norms that had been fostered by the pre-existing structural context of the firm.Strategic Change, Resource Allocation Process, Top-down Intervention
Sudden Death of Entanglement of Two Jaynes-Cummings Atoms
We investigate entanglement dynamics of two isolated atoms, each in its own
Jaynes-Cummings cavity. We show analytically that initial entanglement has an
interesting subsequent time evolution, including the so-called sudden death
effect.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
