    Age- and sex- specific all-cause mortality risk greatest in metabolic syndrome combinations with elevated blood pressure from 7 U.S. cohorts

    Background The association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and all-cause mortality is well established but it is unclear if there are differences in mortality risk among the 32 possible MetS combinations. Hence, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the associations between different MetS combinations and its individual components with all-cause mortality, and to examine differences in the association by age and sex. Methods A merged sample of 82,717 adults from 7 U.S. cohorts was used. Results In our sample, MetS was present in 32% of men, 34% of women, 28% of younger adults (18–65 years) and 62% of older adults (>65 years) with 14,989 deaths over 14.6 ± 7.4 years of follow-up. Risk of all-cause mortality was higher in younger individuals with a greater number of MetS factors present, but in older adults having all 5 MetS factors was the only combination significantly associated with mortality. Regardless of age or sex, elevated blood pressure was the MetS factor most consistently present in MetS combinations that were significantly and most strongly associated with mortality. In fact, elevated blood pressure in the absence of other risk factors was significantly associated with mortality in men (HR, 95% CI = 1.56, 1.33–1.84), women (HR = 1.62, 1.44–1.81) and younger adults (HR = 1.61, 1.45–1.79). Conversely, waist circumference, glucose and triglycerides in isolation were not associated with mortality (p>0.05). Conclusion In a large U.S. population, different combinations of MetS components vary substantially in their associations with all-cause mortality. Men, women and younger individuals with MetS combinations including elevated blood pressure had stronger associations with greater mortality risk, with minimal associations between MetS and mortality risk in older adults. Thus, we suggest that future algorithms may wish to consider differential weighting of these common metabolic risk factors, particularly in younger populations.York University Librarie

    TaintTrace: Efficient Flow Tracing with Dynamic Binary Rewriting

    TaintTrace is a high performance flow tracing tool that protects systems against security exploits. It is based on dynamic execution binary rewriting empowering our tool with fine-grained monitoring of system activities such as the tracking of the usage and propagation of data origi-nated from the network. The challenge lies in minimizing the run-time overhead of the tool. TaintTrace uses a number of techniques such as direct memory mapping to optimize performance. In this paper, we demonstrate that TaintTrace is effective in protecting against various attacks while main-taining a modest slowdown of 5.5 times, offering significant improvements over similar tools.

    New Methods for the Objective Measurement of Bra Fit

    The fit of a bra is critical, not only from a comfort and support perspective but it can significantly impact on the health and well-being of the wearer (Chan et al. 2001). Bra fitting is particularly important for adolescent females as it can affect the size, shape, and composition of their bones and breasts during this growth period (Strasburger 2006). Wood et al. (2008) found that 80% of young women, aged 18-26, that they investigated, wore the wrong sized bras. Bra fitting is still an inherently subjective process. It relies on the experience of a professional bra fitter to assess the fit against a checklist of fitting criteria. More accurate fitting could be achieved if the process was made more objective. This paper presents the results of a study to objectively measure the fit of crop-top bras. Crop top bras are currently very popular because they are highly extensible, body hugging garments that are comfortable to wear, imperceptible under clothing and protective. Furthermore they have no supporting wires to cause excessive skin pressure which may inhibit body growth (Ashby 2005). However a critical feature of these bras is that they can cause breast deformation which detracts from their other beneficial features. This study specifically addresses these effects of breast deformation and defines new, objectively measurable parameters to quantify it, through a series of wearer trials and the analysis of 3D body scans conducted for a range of commercial crop top bras and newly developed bras with increased cup volumes designed to reduce the effects of breast deformation

    Effectiveness of a knowledge-contact program in improving nursing students’ attitude and emotional competence in serving people with HIV/AIDS

    a b s t r a c t This study compared the effectiveness of an AIDS knowledge-only program (knowledge) with a combined program of AIDS knowledge and contact with people having HIV/AIDS (PHA) (knowledgecontact) in reducing nursing students' stigma and discrimination towards PHA and in enhancing their emotional competence to serve PHA. Eighty-nine nursing students from two universities in Hong Kong were randomly assigned to either the knowledge or the knowledge-contact condition. All participants completed measures of AIDS knowledge, stigmatizing attitudes, fear of contagion, willingness to treat, positive affect, and negative affect at pre-test, post-test, and six-week follow-up. Findings showed that in both groups, significant improvement in AIDS knowledge, stigmatizing attitudes, fear of contagion, willingness to treat, and negative affect were found at post-test. The effects on AIDS knowledge, fear of contagion, willingness to treat, and negative affect were sustained at follow-up for both groups. Intergroup comparisons at post-test showed that the effectiveness of knowledge-contact program was significantly greater than knowledge program in improving stigmatizing attitudes. No significant difference between the two groups was found at follow-up. Findings showed the short-term effect of contact in improving nursing students' attitudes and emotional competence in serving PHA. Implications for research and training of nursing staff were discussed

    Inhomogeneous charge transfer within monolayer zinc phthalocyanine absorbed on TiO2(110)

    The d-orbital contribution from the transition metal centers of phthalocyanine brings difficulties to understand the role of the organic ligands and their molecular frontier orbitals when it adsorbs on oxide surfaces. Here we use zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc)TiO (110) as a model system where the zinc d-orbitals are located deep below the organic orbitals leaving room for a detailed study of the interaction between the organic ligand and the substrate. A charge depletion from the highest occupied molecular orbital is observed, and a consequent shift of N1s and C1s to higher binding energy in photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). A detailed comparison of peak shifts in PES and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy illustrates a slightly uneven charge distribution within the molecular plane and an inhomogeneous charge transfer screening between the center and periphery of the organic ligand: faster in the periphery and slower at the center, which is different from other metal phthalocyanine, e.g., FePcTiO . Our results indicate that the metal center can substantially influence the electronic properties of the organic ligand at the interface by introducing an additional charge transfer channel to the inner molecular part

    Electronic Structure, Pore Size Distribution, and Sorption Characterization of an Unusual MOF, {[Ni(dpbz)][Ni(CN)\u3csub\u3e4\u3c/sub\u3e]}n, dpbz = 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene

    The monoclinic (Ni(L)[Ni(CN)4] (L= 1,4-Bis(4-pyridyl) benzene) compound (defined as Ni-dpbz) is a flexible metal organic framework which assumes a pillared structure with layers defined by 2D Ni[Ni(CN)4]n nets and dpbz ligands as pillars. The structure features an entrapped dpbz ligand that links between the open ends of four-fold Ni sites from two neighboring chains. This arrangement results in an unusual 5-fold pseudo square-pyramid environment for Ni and a significantly long Ni-N distance of 2.369(4) Å. Using Density Functional Theory calculations, the different bonding characteristics between the 5-fold and 6-fold Ni\u27s were determined. We found that there is weak covalent bonding between the 5-fold Ni and N in the entrapped ligand, and the 6-fold Ni-N bonds provide effective electronic conduction. The disordered dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent molecules are not bonded to the framework. The material has a single pore with a diameter of 4.1 Å. This pore includes approximately 55% of the total free volume (based on a zero-diameter probe). The accessible pore surface area and pore volume were calculated to be 507 m2/g and 6.99 cm3/kg, respectively. The maximum amount of CO2 that can be accommodated in the pores after DMSO is removed was found to be 204 mg/g, agreeing with the results of adsorption/desorption experiments of about 220 mg/g

    Surface concentration dependent structures of iodine on Pd(110)

    We use photoelectron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory to investigate coverage dependent iodine structures on Pd(110). At 0.5 ML (monolayer), a c(2 × 2) structure is formed with iodine occupying the four-fold hollow site. At increasing coverage, the iodine layer compresses into a quasi-hexagonal structure at 2/3 ML, with iodine occupying both hollow and long bridge positions. There is a substantial difference in electronic structure between these two iodine sites, with a higher electron density on the bridge bonded iodine. In addition, numerous positively charged iodine near vacancies are found along the domain walls. These different electronic structures will have an impact on the chemical properties of these iodine atoms within the layer
