    Among the efforts made to attract students and supporters, many business schools use brochures or magazines to build and maintain relationships with alumni and other stakeholders, to attract new students, and to improve their overall visibility. These promotional materials have various contents, such as message from the dean, academic programs, student achievements, or faculty and staff news, among others. We perform a content analysis on the extent to which the content is utilized by AACSB-accredited business schools in the United States. The study provides an initial picture of self-promotion of business schools using school magazines. The result will increase our knowledge in the area of higher education marketing and help inform marketing professionals in business schools and colleges or universities in general

    Hashing techniques have been intensively investigated in the design of highly efficient search engines for largescale computer vision applications. Compared with prior approximate nearest neighbor search approaches like treebased indexing, hashing-based search schemes have prominent advantages in terms of both storage and computational efficiencies. Moreover, the procedure of devising hash functions can be easily incorporated into sophisticated machine learning tools, leading to data-dependent and task-specific compact hash codes. Therefore, a number of learning paradigms, ranging from unsupervised to supervised, have been applied to compose appropriate hash functions. However, most of the existing hash function learning methods either treat hash function design as a classification problem or generate binary codes to satisfy pairwise supervision, and have not yet directly optimized the search accuracy. In this paper, we propose to leverage listwise supervision into a principled hash function learning framework. In particular, the ranking information is represented by a set of rank triplets that can be used to assess the quality of ranking. Simple linear projection-based hash functions are solved efficiently through maximizing the ranking quality over the training data. We carry out experiments on large image datasets with size up to one million and compare with the state-of-the-art hashing techniques. The extensive results corroborate that our learned hash codes via listwise supervision can provide superior search accuracy without incurring heavy computational overhead. 1

    Optical Photometry of Type II-P Supernova 2004dj in NGC 2403

    We present photometric data of the type II-P supernova (SN) 2004dj in NGC 2403. The multicolor light curves cover the SN from \sim 60 to 200 days after explosion, and are measured with a set of intermediate-band filters that have the advantage of tracing the strength variations of some spectral features. The light curves show a flat evolution in the middle of the plateau phase, then decline exponentially at the late times, with a rate of 0.10±\pm0.03 mag (10 days)1^{-1} in most of the filters. In the nebular phase, the spectral energy distribution (SED) of SN 2004dj shows a steady increase in the flux near 6600 \AA and 8500 \AA, which may correspond to the emission lines of Hα\alpha and Ca II near-IR triplet, respectively. The photometric behavior suggests that SN 2004dj is a normal SN II-P. Compared with the light curves of another typical SN II-P 1999em, we estimate the explosion date to be June 10±\pm21 UT, 2004 (JD 2453167±\pm21) for SN 2004dj. We also estimate the ejected nickel mass during the explosion to be M(56Ni)M(^{56}\rm{Ni}) = 0.023 ±\pm 0.005 MM_{\odot} from two different methods, which is typical for a SN II-P. We derive the explosion energy E0.750.38+0.56×1051E \approx 0.75^{+0.56}_{-0.38}\times10^{51} erg, the ejecta mass M10.05.2+7.4M \approx 10.0^{+7.4}_{-5.2} MM_{\odot}, and the initial radius R282122+253R \approx 282^{+253}_{-122} RR_{\odot} for the presupernova star of SN 2004dj, which are consistent with other typical SNe II-P.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A

    Ultra-broadband Light Absorption by a Sawtooth Anisotropic Metamaterial Slab

    We present an ultra broadband thin-film infrared absorber made of saw-toothed anisotropic metamaterial. Absorbtivity of higher than 95% at normal incidence is supported in a wide range of frequencies, where the full absorption width at half maximum is about 86%. Such property is retained well at a very wide range of incident angles too. Light of shorter wavelengths are harvested at upper parts of the sawteeth of smaller widths, while light of longer wavelengths are trapped at lower parts of larger tooth widths. This phenomenon is explained by the slowlight modes in anisotropic metamaterial waveguide. Our study can be applied in the field of designing photovoltaic devices and thermal emitters.Comment: 12 pages, 4 picture

    13 Color Photometry of Open Cluster M48

    This paper presents 13 color CCD intermediate-band spectrophotometry of a field centered on the open cluster M48 (NGC 2548), from 400nm to nearly 1000nm, taken with Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) Multi-Color Survey Photometric system. The fundamental parameters of this cluster are derived with a new method which based on the comparison between the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of cluster stars and the theoretical SEDs of Padova models. We find that the best-fitting age of M48 is 0.32 Gyr, the distance is 780 pc and a reddening E(B-V)=0.04 with a solar metallicity Z=0.019Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, will appear in the January 2005 issue of PAS
