    Sentiment Analysis and Political Party Classification in 2016 U.S. President Debates in Twitter

    We introduce a framework of combining tweet sentiment analysis with available default user profiles to classify political party of users who posted tweets in 2016 U.S. president debates. The main works focus on extracting event-related information in short event period instead of collecting tweets in a long-time period as most previous works do. Our framework is not limited in debate event, it can be used by researchers to build rationale of other events study. In sentiment analysis, we show that all three Naïve Bayes classifiers with different distributions obtain accuracy above 75% and the results reveal positive tweets most likely follow Gaussian or Multinomial distributions while negative tweets most likely follow Bernoulli distribution in our training data. We also show that under unbalanced sparse term document setting, instead of using “Add-1” parameter, tuning Laplace smoothing parameter to adjust the weights of new terms in a tweet can help improve the classifier’s performance in targeted direction.     Regulatory Mechanisms of bHLH Transcription Factors in Plant Adaptive Responses to Various Abiotic Stresses

    Basic helix-loop-helix proteins (bHLHs) comprise one of the largest families of transcription factors in plants. They have been shown to be involved in responses to various abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, chilling, heavy metal toxicity, iron deficiency, and osmotic damages. By specifically binding to cis-elements in the promoter region of stress related genes, bHLHs can regulate their transcriptional expression, thereby regulating the plant’s adaptive responses. This review focuses on the structural characteristics of bHLHs, the regulatory mechanism of how bHLHs are involved transcriptional activation, and the mechanism of how bHLHs regulate the transcription of target genes under various stresses. Finally, as increasing research demonstrates that flavonoids are usually induced under fluctuating environments, the latest research progress and future research prospects are described on the mechanisms of how flavonoid biosynthesis is regulated by bHLHs in the regulation of the plant’s responses to abiotic stresses

    Collapsin response mediator protein 5-associated optic neuropathy: clinical characteristics, radiologic clues, and outcomes

    ObjectiveCollapsin response mediator protein 5-associated optic neuropathy (CRMP5-ON) is a rare entity of autoimmune optic neuropathy. This study aimed to review the neuro-ophthalmic findings and outcomes in a series of patients with CRMP5-ON to further characterize its clinical phenotype, radiologic clues, and outcomes.MethodsThis was a retrospective case series and a single-center medical chart review of all patients with CRPM5-seropositive ON at the Department of Neurology, Beijing Tongren Hospital, from December 1, 2020, to March 31, 2023. The main outcome measures were neuro-ophthalmic manifestations, radiologic characteristics, and clinical outcomes of CRMP5-ON; coexisting neural autoantibody, paraneoplastic associations, and the impact of immunosuppressant therapy.ResultsFive patients were identified. Four (80%) were female, and the average age at onset was 59.4 years (range 53–69 years), with an average follow-up of 15.3 months (range 1.4–28.7 months). The average best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at nadir was 20/120 (range 20/20 to count fingers). Seven of ten affected eyes (70%) showed diffuse defects of the central field. Painless bilateral involvement and optic disk edema occurred in 100% of patients, combined with vitritis, uveitis, or retinitis in four (80%). Four patients (80%) had MRI abnormalities along the optic nerve (one patient with optic nerve enhancement and three patients had optic nerve sheath enhancement or peribulbar fat enhancement). Three patients (60%) had optic neuropathy with other neurologic symptoms. Four patients (80%) had confirmed cancer (two were small-cell lung carcinoma, one was papillary thyroid carcinoma and another was thymoma and invasive pulmonary adenocarcinoma). All cancers were identified after the presentation of the optic neuropathy. The intervention included IVIG, IVMP, surgery and chemotherapy. The average BCVA at the last follow-up was 20/50 (range 20/20 to count fingers). Three patients had surgery during the initial hospitalization, and were stable during the follow-up. Among two patients who received IVMP, both had improvement after treatment, although one patient had worsening non-ocular neurologic symptoms during the steroid taper.ConclusionCRMP5-ON presented with optic disc edema, often bilateral involved and combined with vitreitis, retinitis, or uveitis. CRMP5-ON can present with MRI optic nerve or perineural optic nerve enhancement, especially in the optic nerve sheath. CRMP5-ON is closely related to paraneoplastic neurologic syndrome.     Graft-to-recipient weight ratio exerts nonlinear effects on prognosis by interacting with donor liver macrosteatosis

    AimTo investigate the interactions between the graft-to-recipient weight ratio (GWRWR) and other risk factors responsible for inferior allograft outcomes.MethodsA total of 362 patients who received liver transplantation (LT) were enrolled. Indicators such as graft/recipient weight and other prognostic factors were collected. Comparisons of indicators and survival analysis were performed in groups categorized by the GWRWR. Interactions of large-for-size grafts (LFSGs) with graft macrosteatosis (MaS) were evaluated in terms of relative excess risk caused by interaction (RERI) and attributable proportion (AP). Cytoscape visualized the role of LFSGs in the risk profile for poor prognosis.ResultsBased on the GWRWR, LT cases can be categorized into three subgroups, standard (1%–2.5%), optimal (2.5%–3.0%), and inferior prognosis (>3.0%). Survival analysis confirmed clear separations in cases categorized by the above-defined limits on the GWRWR (P < 0.05). LFSGs caused inferior prognosis by initiating positive interactions with MaS severity.ConclusionThe GWRWR exerted nonlinear effects on prognosis in deceased donor LT cases. LFSGs (GWRWR > 3.0%) caused inferior outcomes, while grafts sized within (2.5%–3.0%) had optimal post-transplant prognosis. MaS increased the risk of poor prognosis by exerting positive synergistic effects on LFSGs

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Cohomology of Graded Twisting of Hopf Algebras

    Let A be a Hopf algebra and B a graded twisting of A by a finite abelian group Γ. Then, categories of comodules over A and B are equivalent (but they are not necessarily monoidally equivalent). We show the relation between the Hochschild cohomology of A and B explicitly. This partially answer a question raised by Bichon. As an application, we prove that A is a twisted Calabi–Yau Hopf algebra if and only if B is a twisted Calabi–Yau algebra, and give the relation between their Nakayama automorphisms

    Laser Self-Mixing Interference: Optical Fiber Coil Sensors for Acoustic Emission Detection

    Acoustic emission (AE) testing is a widely used nondestructive testing method for the early detection of failures in materials and structures. In this paper, an AE detection sensor combining optical fiber sensing with laser self-mixing interference (SMI) technology is proposed. A multi-coil optical fiber ring wound round a cylindrical acrylic skeleton was designed in order to sense the deformation caused by AE elastic waves, which was then demodulated using self-mixing interference technology. Finite element analyses were conducted in order to investigate the deformation of fiber under acoustic sources. AE signals induced via ball-dropping impact experiments were successfully detected by the proposed experimental system. The proposed SMI optical fiber AE sensing system has the advantages of being free from electromagnetic interference and having a simple structure, low implementation cost and high measurement resolution and sensitivity
