    Quality Measures of Universities and the Determinants of Tuition in South Korea

    University tuition had increased in highly excess of the inflation rate from 1990s until 2008. Many people are wondering whether the quality of university education is proportional to the tuition level. Thus, this capstone project examines whether the quality measures in higher education can predict the tuition level. After analyzing eight-year data of 146 private universities in South Korea, I get the result that university tuition is not a function of quality measures in terms of educational costs. However, tuition is a function of quality measures related with attractiveness, accomplishment, and satisfaction. Incoming student recruitment rate, and drop-out rate have significant impact on the tuition level at a 99 percent confidence level. Admission competition and research funding per faculty from internal sources also have statistically significant impact on the tuition level at a 95 percent confidence level. Even though the tuition level has increased continuously, the rate of university entrance in terms of high school graduates also increased. The cost of college education impacts society broadly, especially under these circumstances. Thus, governmental intervention may be necessary. Actually, the Korean government has tried to stabilize the level of tuition since 2011. So this study also examines policy effectiveness and gets the result that tuition is reduced by the policy as intended. Considering the result that the quality measures representing educational costs cannot predict the tuition level, universities should make an effort to relieve tuition burden by setting rational criteria of tuition level and reflecting all cost factors in this criteria. In the light of the result that tuition is a function of quality measures related with attractiveness, accomplishment, and satisfaction, government must be careful when it tries to regulate university tuition because there might be a possibility that the policy of tuition regulation would lead to deterioration in education quality

    Adaptive path finding algorithm in dynamic environment for warehouse robot

    Warehouse robots have been widely used by manufacturers and online retailer to automate good delivery process. One of the fundamental components when designing a warehouse robot is path finding algorithm. In the past, many path finding algorithms had been proposed to identify the optimal path and improve the efficiency in different conditions. For example, A* path finding algorithm is developed to obtain the shortest path, while D* obtains a complete coverage path from source to destination. Although these algorithms improved the efficiency in path finding, dynamic obstacle that may exist in warehouse environment was not considered. This paper presents AD* algorithm, a path finding algorithm that works in dynamic environment for warehouse robot. AD* algorithm is able to detect not only static obstacle but also dynamic obstacles while operating in warehouse environment. In dynamic obstacle path prediction, image of the warehouse environment is processed to identify and track obstacles in the path. The image is pre-processed using perspective transformation, dilation and erosion. Once obstacle has been identified using background subtraction, the server will track and predict future path of the dynamic object to avoid the obstacle

    Realization of giant magnetoelectricity in helimagnets

    We show that low field magnetoelectric (ME) properties of helimagnets Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe1-xAlx)12O22 can be efficiently tailored by Al-substitution level. As x increases, the critical magnetic field for switching electric polarization is systematically reduced from ~1 T down to ~1 mT, and the ME susceptibility is greatly enhanced to reach a giant value of 2.0 x 10^4 ps/m at an optimum x = 0.08. We find that control of nontrivial orbital moment in the octahedral Fe sites through the Al-substitution is crucial for fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy and obtaining the conspicuously improved ME characteristics

    Extreme Drug Resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii Infections in Intensive Care Units, South Korea

    BACKGROUND: Difference in adaptability responses to stress has been observed amongst bird species, strains, and individuals. Components of the HPA axis, one of the internal systems involved in homeostasis re-establishment following stress, could play a role in this variability of responses. The aim of the present study was 1) to identify genes involved in the regulation of adrenal activity following ACTH stimulation and 2) to examine adrenal genes differentially expressed in individuals with high and low plasma corticosterone response following ACTH treatment. RESULTS: Analysis with 21 K poultry oligo microarrays indicated that ACTH treatment affected the expression of 134 genes. Several transcripts assigned to genes involved in the adrenal ACTH signaling pathway and steroidogenic enzymes were identified as differentially expressed by ACTH treatment. Real-time PCR on 18 selected genes confirmed changes in transcript levels of 11 genes, including MC2R, CREM, Cry, Bmal1, Sqle, Prax1, and StAR. Only 4 genes revealed to be differentially expressed between higher and lower adrenal responders to ACTH treatment. CONCLUSION: The results from the present study reveal putative candidate genes; their role in regulation of adrenal functions and adaptability to stress should be further investigated

    Calpain-mediated proteolysis of polycystin-1 C-terminus induces JAK2 and ERK signal alterations

    AbstractAutosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), a hereditary renal disease caused by mutations in PKD1 (85%) or PKD2 (15%), is characterized by the development of gradually enlarging multiple renal cysts and progressive renal failure. Polycystin-1 (PC1), PKD1 gene product, is an integral membrane glycoprotein which regulates a number of different biological processes including cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell polarity, and tubulogenesis. PC1 is a target of various proteolytic cleavages and proteosomal degradations, but its role in intracellular signaling pathways remains poorly understood. Herein, we demonstrated that PC1 is a novel substrate for μ- and m-calpains, which are calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. Overexpression of PC1 altered both Janus-activated kinase 2 (JAK2) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signals, which were independently regulated by calpain-mediated PC1 degradation. They suggest that the PC1 function on JAK2 and ERK signaling pathways might be regulated by calpains in response to the changes in intracellular calcium concentration
