Preparedness for use of the rapid result HIV self-test by gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM): a mixed methods exploratory study among MSM and those involved in HIV prevention and care
Objectives:
The aim of the study was to explore preparedness for the HIV self-test among men who have sex with men (MSM) and those involved in HIV prevention and care.
Methods:
A mixed methods exploratory research design was employed, detailing awareness and willingness to use the self-test and the perceived barriers and facilitators to implementation. Quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis were completed in parallel. Descriptive and inferential analysis of cross-sectional bar-based survey data collected from MSM through a self-completed questionnaire and oral fluid specimen collection (n = 999) was combined with qualitative, thematic, analysis of data collected through 12 expert focus groups (n = 55) consisting of gay men, National Health Service (NHS) staff, community organizations, entrepreneurs and activists. Findings were subsequently combined and assessed for synergies.
Results:
Among MSM, self-test awareness was moderate (55%). Greater awareness was associated with increased educational attainment [adjusted odds ratio 1.51; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00–2.30; P = 0.05] and previous history of sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing (adjusted odds ratio 1.63; 95% CI 1.11–2.39; P = 0.01). Willingness to use the test was high (89%) and associated with meeting sexual partners online (unadjusted odds ratio 1.96; 95% CI 1.31–2.94; P < 0.001). Experts highlighted the overall acceptability of self-testing; it was understood as convenient, discreet, accessible, and with a low burden to services. However, some ambivalence towards self-testing was reported; it could reduce opportunities to engage with wider services, wider health issues and the determinants of risk.
Conclusions:
Self-testing represents an opportunity to reduce barriers to HIV testing and enhance prevention and access to care. Levels of awareness are moderate but willingness to use is high. Self-testing may amplify health inequalities
Effects of sheep grazing exclusion on alpine tall tussock grassland
Substantial areas of alpine tall tussock grasslands are being retired from grazing as part of Crown
pastoral lease tenure review because of the perceived negative impact of grazing livestock. However, relatively
little is known about the effect of sheep exclusion on these grasslands. We analysed data from five grazing
exclosure plots over a 6-year period to examine the effect merino sheep have relative to hares and rabbits in
alpine tall tussock grasslands used for summer grazing. Unfortunately, because of snow damage to fences,
we were unable to detect any significant hare and rabbit effects. Over the time of this study, there was no
evidence for significant vegetation recovery after exclusion of sheep grazing. This may be because of other
grazing animals in the system, or the low stocking rates and non-random grazing behaviour of merino ewes.
There was, however, a significant increase in the cover of exotic herbs Pilosella officinarum and P. praealta
and a significant decrease in the cover of native tussocks Festuca novae-zelandiae and Poa colensoi regardless
of grazing exclusion. While this pattern has been previously documented in studies at lower elevations and
usually with a history of burning, our results demonstrate that alpine grasslands with no burning history can
also be invaded by Pilosella spp. over relatively short time frames. Replicated grazing exclosure trials such as
the one described in this paper are important for providing objective information on both long-term trends in
vegetation composition and the impacts of grazing animals in alpine grasslands as a basis for making informed
decisions on their future management
Halperin-Lubensky-Ma effect in type-I superconducting films
In this note we employ concurrently techniques of generalized
-functions and compactification methods introduced in previous
publications, to study the Halperin-Lubensky-Ma theory of induced weak
first-order phase transitions applied to type-I superconducting films. We
obtain closed formulas to the critical temperature and to the size temperature

Correlated Errors in Quantum Error Corrections
We show that errors are not generated correlatedly provided that quantum bits
do not directly interact with (or couple to) each other. Generally, this
no-qubits-interaction condition is assumed except for the case where two-qubit
gate operation is being performed. In particular, the no-qubits-interaction
condition is satisfied in the collective decoherence models. Thus, errors are
not correlated in the collective decoherence. Consequently, we can say that
current quantum error correcting codes which correct single-qubit-errors will

Quantifying similarity in animal vocal sequences: Which metric performs best?
1. Many animals communicate using sequences of discrete acoustic elements which can be complex, vary in their degree of stereotypy, and are potentially open-ended. Variation in sequences can provide important ecological, behavioural, or evolutionary information about the structure and connectivity of populations, mechanisms for vocal cultural evolution, and the underlying drivers responsible for these processes. Various mathematical techniques have been used to form a realistic approximation of sequence similarity for such tasks.
2. Here, we use both simulated and empirical datasets from animal vocal sequences (rock hyrax, Procavia capensis; humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae; bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus; and Carolina chickadee, Poecile carolinensis) to test which of eight sequence analysis metrics are more likely to reconstruct the information encoded in the sequences, and to test the fidelity of estimation of model parameters, when the sequences are assumed to conform to particular statistical models.
3. Results from the simulated data indicated that multiple metrics were equally successful in reconstructing the information encoded in the sequences of simulated individuals (Markov chains, n-gram models, repeat distribution, and edit distance), and data generated by different stochastic processes (entropy rate and n-grams). However, the string edit (Levenshtein) distance performed consistently and significantly better than all other tested metrics (including entropy, Markov chains, n-grams, mutual information) for all empirical datasets, despite being less commonly used in the field of animal acoustic communication.
4. The Levenshtein distance metric provides a robust analytical approach that should be considered in the comparison of animal acoustic sequences in preference to other commonly employed techniques (such as Markov chains, hidden Markov models, or Shannon entropy). The recent discovery that non-Markovian vocal sequences may be more common in animal communication than previously thought, provides a rich area for future research that requires non-Markovian based analysis techniques to investigate animal grammars and potentially the origin of human language.We thank Melinda Rekdahl, Todd Freeberg and his graduate students, Amiyaal Ilany, Elizabeth Hobson, and Jessica Crance for providing comments of on a previous version of this manuscript. Mouse prion protein polymorphism Phe-108/Val-189 affects the kinetics of fibril formation and the response to seeding: evidence for a two-step nucleation polymerization mechanism
Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders associated with the polymerization of the cellular form of prion protein (PrP(C)) into an amyloidogenic β-sheet infectious form (PrP(Sc)). The sequence of host PrP is the major determinant of host prion disease susceptibility. In mice, the presence of allele a (Prnp(a), encoding the polymorphism Leu-108/Thr-189) or b (Prnp(b), Phe-108/Val-189) is associated with short or long incubation times, respectively, following infection with PrP(Sc). The molecular bases linking PrP sequence, infection susceptibility, and convertibility of PrP(C) into PrP(Sc) remain unclear. Here we show that recombinant PrP(a) and PrP(b) aggregate and respond to seeding differently in vitro. Our kinetic studies reveal differences during the nucleation phase of the aggregation process, where PrP(b) exhibits a longer lag phase that cannot be completely eliminated by seeding the reaction with preformed fibrils. Additionally, PrP(b) is more prone to propagate features of the seeds, as demonstrated by conformational stability and electron microscopy studies of the formed fibrils. We propose a model of polymerization to explain how the polymorphisms at positions 108 and 189 produce the phenotypes seen in vivo. Quantum Gambling Using Two Nonorthogonal States
We give a (remote) quantum gambling scheme that makes use of the fact that
quantum nonorthogonal states cannot be distinguished with certainty. In the
proposed scheme, two participants Alice and Bob can be regarded as playing a
game of making guesses on identities of quantum states that are in one of two
given nonorthogonal states: if Bob makes a correct (an incorrect) guess on the
identity of a quantum state that Alice has sent, he wins (loses). It is shown
that the proposed scheme is secure against the nonentanglement attack. It can
also be shown heuristically that the scheme is secure in the case of the

The ATLAS3D project - XXVI : H I discs in real and simulated fast and slow rotators
One quarter of all nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) outside Virgo host a disc/ring of H I with size from a few to tens of kpc and mass up to ∼109 M⊙. Here we investigate whether this H I is related to the presence of a stellar disc within the host making use of the classification of ETGs in fast and slow rotators (FR/SR). We find a large diversity of H I masses and morphologies within both families. Surprisingly, SRs are detected as often, host as much H I and have a similar rate of H I discs/rings as FRs. Accretion of H I is therefore not always linked to the growth of an inner stellar disc. The weak relation between H I and stellar disc is confirmed by their frequent kinematical misalignment in FRs, including cases of polar and counterrotating gas. In SRs the H I is usually polar. This complex picture highlights a diversity of ETG formation histories which may be lost in the relative simplicity of their inner structure and emerges when studying their outer regions. We find that Λ CDM hydrodynamical simulations have difficulties reproducing the H I properties of ETGs. The gas discs formed in simulations are either too massive or too small depending on the star formation feedback implementation. Kinematical misalignments match the observations only qualitatively. The main point of conflict is that nearly all simulated FRs and a large fraction of all simulated SRs host corotating H I. Study of the three-dimensional shape and dynamics of coronal loops observed by Hinode/EIS
We study plasma flows along selected coronal loops in NOAA Active Region
10926, observed on 3 December 2006 with Hinode's EUV Imaging Spectrograph
(EIS). From the shape of the loops traced on intensity images and the Doppler
shifts measured along their length we compute their three-dimensional (3D)
shape and plasma flow velocity using a simple geometrical model. This
calculation was performed for loops visible in the Fe VIII 185 Ang., Fe X 184
Ang., Fe XII 195 Ang., Fe XIII 202 Ang., and Fe XV 284 Ang. spectral lines. In
most cases the flow is unidirectional from one footpoint to the other but there
are also cases of draining motions from the top of the loops to their
footpoints. Our results indicate that the same loop may show different flow
patterns when observed in different spectral lines, suggesting a dynamically
complex rather than a monolithic structure. We have also carried out magnetic
extrapolations in the linear force-free field approximation using SOHO/MDI
magnetograms, aiming toward a first-order identification of extrapolated
magnetic field lines corresponding to the reconstructed loops. In all cases,
the best-fit extrapolated lines exhibit left-handed twist (alpha < 0), in
agreement with the dominant twist of the region.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Equilibrium states for potentials with \sup\phi - \inf\phi < \htop(f)
In the context of smooth interval maps, we study an inducing scheme approach
to prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for potentials
with he `bounded range' condition \sup \phi - \inf \phi < \htop, first used
by Hofbauer and Keller. We compare our results to Hofbauer and Keller's use of
Perron-Frobenius operators. We demonstrate that this `bounded range' condition
on the potential is important even if the potential is H\"older continuous. We
