Quantitative agreement of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions for domain-wall motion and spin-wave propagation
The magnetic exchange interaction is the one of the key factors governing the
basic characteristics of magnetic systems. Unlike the symmetric nature of the
Heisenberg exchange interaction, the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya
interaction (DMI) generates an antisymmetric exchange interaction which offers
challenging opportunities in spintronics with intriguing antisymmetric
phenomena. The role of the DMI, however, is still being debated, largely
because distinct strengths of DMI have been measured for different magnetic
objects, particularly chiral magnetic domain walls (DWs) and non-reciprocal
spin waves (SWs). In this paper, we show that, after careful data analysis,
both the DWs and SWs experience the same strength of DMI. This was confirmed by
spin-torque efficiency measurement for the DWs, and Brillouin light scattering
measurement for the SWs. This observation, therefore, indicates the unique role
of the DMI on the magnetic DW and SW dynamics and also guarantees the
compatibility of several DMI-measurement schemes recently proposed.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure
Removal of Particulate Matter in a Tubular Wet Electrostatic Precipitator Using a Water Collection Electrode
As one of the effective control devices of air pollutants, the wet electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is an effective technique to eliminate acid mist and fine particles that are re-entrained in a collection electrode. However, its collection efficiency can deteriorate, as its operation is subject to water-induced corrosion of the collection electrode. To overcome this drawback, we modified the wet ESP system with the installation of a PVC dust precipitator wherein water is supplied as a replacement of the collection electrode. With this modification, we were able to construct a compact wet ESP with a small specific collection area (SCA, 0.83 m2/(m3/min)) that can acquire a high collection efficiency of fine particles (99.7%)
Alpha-Linolenic Acid-Enriched Butter Promotes Fatty Acid Remodeling and Thermogenic Activation in the Brown Adipose Tissue
Supplementation with n-3 long-chain (LC) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) is known to promote thermogenesis via the activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT). Agricultural products that are biofortified with α-linolenic acid (ALA), the precursor of n-3 LC PUFA, have been launched to the market, but their impact on BAT function is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ALA-biofortified butter on lipid metabolism and thermogenic functions in the BAT. C57BL/6 mice were fed a high-fat diet containing ALA-biofortified butter (n3Bu, 45% calorie from fat) for ten weeks in comparison with the isocaloric high-fat diets prepared from conventional butter or margarine. The intake of n3Bu significantly reduced the whitening of BAT and increased the thermogenesis in response to acute-cold treatment. Also, n3Bu supplementation is linked with the remodeling of BAT by promoting bioconversion into n-3 LC PUFA, FA elongation and desaturation, and mitochondrial biogenesis. Taken together, our results support that ALA-biofortified butter is a novel source of n-3 PUFA, which potentiates the BAT thermogenic function
Unexpected Sudden Death of a 19-Year-Old Female with Congenital Single Coronary Artery Ostium during Exertion
Coronary artery anomalies are associated often with myocardial ischemia or sudden cardiac death. A 19-year-old woman who participated in an exertive game lost consciousness upon one such exertion. She was taken to a hospital where she died on the same day. An autopsy revealed that she had bifurcated coronary arteries, which arose from one coronary ostium in the left sinus of Valsalva. The right coronary artery arose from the left sinus and traveled between the aorta and the pulmonary trunk. The heart as well as the cardiac conduction system depended exclusively on the single coronary artery ostium for oxygenated blood supply, and the unbalanced blood distribution on her exertion probably led to sudden cardiac death. The case highlights the medicolegal importance of unexpected sudden cardiac death related to an anomalous origin of the coronary arteries
