Chemical Vapor Deposition of Helical Carbon Nanofibers

    Get PDF
Helical carbon nanofibers (HCNFs), including carbon nanocoils (CNCs), carbon nanotwists, and multi-walled CNCs, can be synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). HCNFs are predicted to have a high mechanical strength and hence are expected to have a use in nanodevices such as electromagnetic wave absorbers and sensors. For nanodevice applications, it is necessary to synthesize HCNFs in high yield and purity. In this chapter, I focus on CNCs and describe its history, expected application, and synthesis method. Finally, I introduce the author’s recent studies on the improvement of the purity of CNCs by improving CVD conditions. A CNC layer with a thickness of larger than 40 μm was grown from a triple layer of SnO2/Fe2O3/SnO2 catalyst on a substrate, and the CNC purity increased to 81 ± 2%

Autistic Traits and Brain Activation during Face-to-Face Conversations in Typically Developed Adults

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviours. The severity of these characteristics is posited to lie on a continuum that extends into the general population. Brain substrates underlying ASD have been investigated through functional neuroimaging studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, fMRI has methodological constraints for studying brain mechanisms during social interactions (for example, noise, lying on a gantry during the procedure, etc.). In this study, we investigated whether variations in autism spectrum traits are associated with changes in patterns of brain activation in typically developed adults. We used near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), a recently developed functional neuroimaging technique that uses near-infrared light, to monitor brain activation in a natural setting that is suitable for studying brain functions during social interactions. METHODOLOGY: We monitored regional cerebral blood volume changes using a 52-channel NIRS apparatus over the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and superior temporal sulcus (STS), 2 areas implicated in social cognition and the pathology of ASD, in 28 typically developed participants (14 male and 14 female) during face-to-face conversations. This task was designed to resemble a realistic social situation. We examined the correlations of these changes with autistic traits assessed using the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ). PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Both the PFC and STS were significantly activated during face-to-face conversations. AQ scores were negatively correlated with regional cerebral blood volume increases in the left STS during face-to-face conversations, especially in males. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate successful monitoring of brain function during realistic social interactions by NIRS as well as lesser brain activation in the left STS during face-to-face conversations in typically developed participants with higher levels of autistic traits

Strain distribution analysis of sputter-formed strained Si by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Simultaneous nanometer-scale measurements of the strain and surface undulation distributions of strained Si (s-Si) layers on strain-relief quadruple-Si1-xGex-layer buffers, using a combined atomic force microscopy (AFM) and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) system, clarify that an s-Si sample formed by our previously proposed sputter epitaxy method has a smoother and more uniformly strained surface than an s-Si sample formed by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy. The TERS analyses suggest that the compositional fluctuation of the underlying Si1-xGex buffer layer is largely related to the weak s-Si strain fluctuation of the sputtered sampl

Anomalous Transport Properties in BiS2-based Superconductors LnO1−xFxBiS2 (Ln = Nd, La-Sm)

We report the electronic properties of the layered bismuth-based sulfide superconductors NdO1−xFxBiS2 (x = 0.25, 0.4, and 0.5) and La1−ySmyO0.5F0.5BiS2 (y = 0.1–0.7), which have been studied by investigation of their transport properties and X-ray diffraction. In the lightly carrier-doped NdO1−xFxBiS2 (x = 0.25 and 0.4) and La1−ySmyO0.5F0.5BiS2 (y = 0.3 and 0.4), the resistivity and Hall coefficient exhibit anomalous temperature dependences below TCDW ∼ 130 and 200 K, respectively, suggesting the formation of an energy gap on the Fermi surface associated with charge-density wave (CDW). In NdO1−xFxBiS2 (x = 0.25), the bond angles and bond lengths of the Bi–S pentahedron change their temperature dependences below ∼200 K, suggesting that a lattice instability related to the Bi–S pentahedron exists below ∼200 K, which is much higher than TCDW. These results indicate that the lattice instability of the Bi–S pentahedron can trigger a CDW transition in the low-carrier region of BiS2 superconductors

Association of Human Leukocyte Antigen with Interstitial Lung Disease in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Protective Role for Shared Epitope

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is frequently associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) as one of extra-articular manifestations. Many studies for Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) allelic association with RA have been reported, but few have been validated in an RA subpopulation with ILD. In this study, we investigated the association of HLA class II alleles with ILD in RA. METHODS: An association study was conducted on HLA-DRB1, DQB1, and DPB1 in 450 Japanese RA patients that were or were not diagnosed with ILD, based on the findings of computed tomography images of the chest. RESULTS: Unexpectedly, HLA-DRB1*04 (corrected P [Pc] = 0.0054, odds ratio [OR] 0.57), shared epitope (SE) (P = 0.0055, OR 0.66) and DQB1*04 (Pc = 0.0036, OR 0.57) were associated with significantly decreased risk of ILD. In contrast, DRB1*16 (Pc = 0.0372, OR 15.21), DR2 serological group (DRB1*15 and *16 alleles) (P = 0.0020, OR 1.75) and DQB1*06 (Pc = 0.0333, OR 1.57, respectively) were significantly associated with risk of ILD. CONCLUSION: HLA-DRB1 SE was associated with reduced, while DR2 serological group (DRB1*15 and *16) with increased, risk for ILD in Japanese patients with RA
