LDL-C/HDL-C Ratio Predicts Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Progression Better Than HDL-C or LDL-C Alone

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) are strong predictors of atherosclerosis. Statin-induced changes in the ratio of LDL-C to HDL-C (LDL-C/HDL-C) predicted atherosclerosis progression better than LDL-C or HDL-C alone. However, the best predictor of subclinical atherosclerosis remains unknown. Our objective was to investigate this issue by measuring changes in carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). A total of 1,920 subjects received health examinations in 1999, and were followed up in 2007. Changes in IMT (follow-up IMT/baseline IMT × 100) were measured by ultrasonography. Our results showed that changes in IMT after eight years were significantly related to HDL-C (inversely, P < 0.05) and to LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (P < 0.05). When the LDL-C/HDL-C ratios were divided into quartiles, analysis of covariance showed that increases in the ratio were related to IMT progression (P < 0.05). This prospective study demonstrated the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio is a better predictor of IMT progression than HDL-C or LDL-C alone

Influences of High Night Temperature on Flowering and Pod Setting in Soybean

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Enrei) plants were grown in pots (15-L volume) placed in a greenhouse with ventilation. At the time when the first flower opened, pots were transferred to growth chambers with natural lighting under day temperature of 30°C and night temperatures of 20, 25 or 30°C. The numbers of flowers opened and pods set each day were recorded and the seed yield and yield components were investigated after harvest. The increase in night temperature decreased the seed size and increased the number of flowers and pods. As a result, the seed weight per plant was unaffected by night temperature. However, high night temperatures increased the number of flowers on the secondary and tertiary racemes. These flowers opened after the 18th day of the flowering period and showed a high rate of pod setting. These results suggest that a high night temperature stimulated flower opening and pod setting in the secondary and tertiary racemes. The increases in the numbers of flowers and pods could serve to moderate the reduction of seed yield caused by a high night temperature

Long Non-Coding RNA CRNDE Is Involved in Resistance to EGFR Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor in EGFR-Mutant Lung Cancer via eIF4A3/MUC1/EGFR Signaling

    (1) Background: Acquired resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) is an intractable problem for many clinical oncologists. The mechanisms of resistance to EGFR-TKIs are complex. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) may play an important role in cancer development and metastasis. However, the biological process between lncRNAs and drug resistance to EGFR-mutated lung cancer remains largely unknown. (2) Methods: Osimertinib- and afatinib-resistant EGFR-mutated lung cancer cells were established using a stepwise method. A microarray analysis of non-coding and coding RNAs was performed using parental and resistant EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and evaluated by bioinformatics analysis through medical-industrial collaboration. (3) Results: Colorectal neoplasia differentially expressed (CRNDE) and DiGeorge syndrome critical region gene 5 (DGCR5) lncRNAs were highly expressed in EGFR-TKI-resistant cells by microarray analysis. RNA-protein binding analysis revealed eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4A3 (eIF4A3) bound in an overlapping manner to CRNDE and DGCR5. The CRNDE downregulates the expression of eIF4A3, mucin 1 (MUC1), and phospho-EGFR. Inhibition of CRNDE activated the eIF4A3/MUC1/EGFR signaling pathway and apoptotic activity, and restored sensitivity to EGFR-TKIs. (4) Conclusions: The results showed that CRNDE is associated with the development of resistance to EGFR-TKIs. CRNDE may be a novel therapeutic target to conquer EGFR-mutant NSCLC
