Coexistence of a pulmonary adenocarcinoma with a focal organizing pneumonia
We report a case of a pulmonary adenocarcinoma in coexistence with an organizing pneumonia. A 73-year-old male presented with an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray. The pathological diagnosis, made via a partial resection, was a focal organizing pneumonia with reactive proliferation of the bronchial epithelium. Three years later, two tumors adjacent to the staple line were revealed by computed tomography. A left lower lobectomy was performed and both tumors were diagnosed as an adenocarcinoma. Because the histological findings for the atypical epithelial areas of the previous tumor were similar to the two new lesions in this patient, we regarded these tumors as a marginal recurrence.ArticleINTERACTIVE CARDIOVASCULAR AND THORACIC SURGERY. 13(4):444-446 (2011)journal articl
Changes in Pollen Fertility of 'Nyoho' Strawberry in Relation to Light Intensity, Temperature and Leaf Carbohydrate and Mineral Concentration
Changes in pollen fertility in forcing strawberry cv. Nyoho(Fragaria×ananassa Duch.)were investigated to clarify the factors affecting fruit malformation caused by poor fertilization which occurs with plant dwarfing and yeild decreace in February to March .Pollen were sampled from 15 greenhouses of strawberry growers, and relationships between pollen germination and climatic factors, mineral and carbohydrate concentration in leaves were analyzed.Pollen fertility decreased in January and February with decrease in
light intensity and outside air temprerature, and increace in
fruit load.It was suggested that the occurrence of fruit malfomation may be mainly caused by the decrease in pollen fetillity. There were highly significant relationships between the pollen fertility and light intensity in 1 to 3
days before anthesis, minimum outside air temperature on the day of anthesis, and carbohyrates,P,K and Ca concentration in the leaves. No constant relationship could be found between polln fertility and leaf N concentration.Pollen fertility at the beginning of harvest for second inflorescence(January)was
improved with CO2 enrichment. These results indicate that the poor pollen development may result from the shortage of photosynthate caused by low light and fruit load.
Clebsch representation of relativistic plasma and generalized enstrophy
The theory of relativistic plasmas is attracting interest as a model of high-energy astronomical objects. The topological constraints, built in the governing equations, play an essential role in characterizing the structures of plasmas. Among various invariants of ideal models, the circulation is one of the most fundamental quantities, being included in other invariants like the helicity. The conventional enstrophy, known to be constant in a two-dimensional flow, can be generalized, by invoking Clebsch variables, to the topological charge of a three-dimensional fluid element, which essentially measures circulations. Since the relativistic effect imparts space-time coupling into the metric, such invariants must be modified. The non-relativistic generalized enstrophy is no longer conserved in a relativistic plasma, implying that the conservation of circulation is violated. In this work, we extend the generalized enstrophy to a Lorentz covariant form. We formulate the Clebsch representation in relativity using the principle of least action and derive a relativistically modified generalized enstrophy that is conserved in the relativistic model
Decreased levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 and vascular endothelial growth factor relevant to the ossification disturbance in femoral heads spontaneous hypertensive rats.
Ossification disturbance in femoral head reportedly is seen in the Spontaneously Hypertensive rats (SHR) between ages of 10 and 20 weeks. We investigated serum and tissue levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in SHR relevant to the ossification disturbance and osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Serum levels of IGF-1 and VEGF were significantly lower in SHR than in Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) at weeks 5, 10, 15 and 20 (p<0.005). The incidence of histological ossification disturbance of the femoral head was higher in SHR (59%) than in WKY (40%) at week 20. Lower serum and local levels of VEGF in SHR appeared to be related to the incomplete ossification of the femoral heads. Immunohistochemical study showed significantly lower numbers of IGF-1 and VEGF positive chondrocytes in the femoral epiphyseal cartilage of SHR than in those of WKY at weeks 10, 15 and 20. Our results suggest that local and/or systemic levels of IGF-1 and VEGF between ages of 5 and 20 weeks might play roles in the pathogenesis of ossifi cation disturbance of the femoral head in SHR
Successful lung lobectomy for a lung cancer following thoracic endovascular aortic repair for a thoracic aortic aneurysm: report of a case
Lung cancer and a thoracic aortic aneurysm were detected simultaneously in a 79-year-old male patient with diabetes. The aneurysm was first treated by thoracic endovascular aortic repair. A right lower lobectomy was subsequently performed after the blood flow of the bronchial and intercostal arteries was confirmed by computed tomographic angiography. The bronchial stump was covered with an intercostal muscle flap. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful. Thoracic endovascular aortic repair is a useful and less invasive treatment for such cases, but a blood flow evaluation of the aortic branches should be done following this procedure before a lung resection is considered.ArticleSURGERY TODAY. 44(5):940-943 (2014)journal articl
RANKL expression in chondrocytes and its promotion by lymphotoxin-alpha in the course of cartilage destruction during rheumatoid arthritis
We investigated the expression and localization of the receptor activator nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) in cartilage from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) of relevance to cartilage degeneration. We also examined the role of exogenous lymphotoxin (LT)-alpha on RANKL expression in human chondrocytes and its effect on in vitro osteoclast differentiation. Cartilage and synovial fluid samples were obtained from 45 patients undergoing total joint replacement surgery or joint puncture, including 24 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and 21 patients with RA. RANKL expression in articular cartilage was examined by immunohistochemistry. LT-alpha concentrations in synovial fluid were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Normal human chondrocytes were stimulated with LT-alpha, and the relative mRNA levels of RANKL, osteoprotegerin (OPG), matrix metalloproteinase-9, and vascular endothelial growth factor were examined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Soluble RANKL protein in culture media was measured using ELISA, and membrane-bound RANKL protein in cells was examined by western blotting. Co-cultures of human chondrocytes with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were stimulated with macrophage-colony stimulating factor and LT-alpha, and osteoclast differentiation was evaluated by staining for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase. LT-alpha concentrations were higher in RA synovial fluid than in OA samples. The population of RANKL-positive chondrocytes of RA cartilage was higher than that of OA cartilage, and correlated with cartilage degeneration. Stimulation of cultured human chondrocytes by LT-alpha increased RANKL expression, the RANKL/OPG ratio, and angiogenic factors. Membrane-bound RANKL in chondrocytes was up-regulated after stimulation of LT-alpha, whereas soluble RANKL in culture medium did not increase. Co-cultures of human chondrocytes and PBMCs demonstrated that LT-alpha stimulated human chondrocytes to produce RANKL and induced osteoclastic differentiation of PBMCs. RANKL produced by chondrocytes may contribute to cartilage destruction during RA and LT-alpha could promote the expression of RANKL in human chondrocytes
Expression of caspase-3 and -9 relevant to cartilage destruction and chondrocyte apoptosis in human osteoarthritic cartilage.
To clarify the involvement of the caspase family in the pathway of NO-induced chondrocyte apoptosis, osteoarthritis (OA) cartilage obtained from 8 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were used for histopathological study. Cartilage samples taken from non-fibrillated areas of femoral head resected during surgery for femoral neck fracture were used for comparison. DNA fragmentation of chondrocytes was detected by the nick end-labeling (TUNEL) method. Apoptosis was further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The distributions of nitrotyrosine (NT), caspase-3, and -9 were examined immunohistochemically. The populations of apoptotic as well as NT-, caspase-3-, and -9-positive cells were quantified by counting the number of cells in the superficial, middle, and deep layers, respectively. The TUNEL-positive cells were observed primarily in superficial proliferating chondrocytes, clustering chondrocytes, and deep-layer chondrocytes of OA cartilage. Few positive cells were seen in the proliferating chondrocytes in the middle layer. Positive reactions for caspase-3 and -9 were observed in chondrocytes in similar areas. Histological OA grade showed significant correlations with the mean populations of apoptotic chondrocytes (% apoptosis) over the 3 areas. The populations of NT-positive cells (% NT) over the same areas also showed significant correlation with OA grade. Positivity for caspase-3 closely correlated with the OA grade, % apoptosis and %NT. It was concluded that caspase-3 and -9 could play a role in NO-induced chondrocyte apoptosis in OA cartilage.</p
Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Stomach: A Case Study
Gastric neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare and have a poor prognosis, and the diagnostic criteria for this disease have recently changed. We herein report a case of sporadic gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma. A 75-year-old man was referred to our hospital with epigastric pain. Endoscopic examination revealed a localized ulcerative lesion (diameter, 4 cm) at the upper stomach. The diagnosis on biopsy was neuroendocrine carcinoma. Total gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy, splenectomy, and cholecystectomy was performed. Pathologically, the tumor infiltrated the subserosal layer, and 6/49 lymph nodes were involved. The tumor was uniform in shape and arranged in a rosette-like structure to form solid nests, with medium-sized, round-to-cuboid-shaped tumor cells and intense mitosis 46/10 HPF. It was positive for synaptophysin and chromogranin A, and the Ki-67 labeling index was 70–80%. The diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma was made according to the WHO 2010 criteria. The patient was followed up for three years without recurrence
