Single Cooper-pair pumping in the adiabatic limit and beyond
We demonstrate controlled pumping of Cooper pairs down to the level of a
single pair per cycle, using an rf-driven Cooper-pair sluice. We also
investigate the breakdown of the adiabatic dynamics in two different ways. By
transferring many Cooper pairs at a time, we observe a crossover between pure
Cooper-pair and mixed Cooper-pair-quasiparticle transport. By tuning the
Josephson coupling that governs Cooper-pair tunneling, we characterize
Landau-Zener transitions in our device. Our data are quantitatively accounted
for by a simple model including decoherence effects.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Long Gamma-Ray Burst Progenitors: Boundary Conditions and Binary Models
The observed association of Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (LGRBs) with peculiar Type
Ic supernovae gives support to Woosley`s collapsar/hypernova model, in which
the GRB is produced by the collapse of the rapidly rotating core of a massive
star to a black hole. The association of LGRBs with small star-forming galaxies
suggests low-metallicity to be a condition for a massive star to evolve to the
collapsar stage. Both completely-mixed single star models and binary star
models are possible. In binary models the progenitor of the GRB is a massive
helium star with a close companion. We find that tidal synchronization during
core-helium burning is reached on a short timescale (less than a few
millennia). However, the strong core-envelope coupling in the subsequent
evolutionary stages is likely to rule out helium stars with main-sequence
companions as progenitors of hypernovae/GRBs. On the other hand, helium stars
in close binaries with a neutron-star or black-hole companion can, despite the
strong core-envelope coupling in the post-helium burning phase, retain

N_pN_n dependence of empirical formula for the lowest excitation energy of the 2^+ states in even-even nuclei
We examine the effects of the additional term of the type on the recently proposed empirical formula for the lowest excitation
energy of the states in even-even nuclei. This study is motivated by the
fact that this term carries the favorable dependence of the valence nucleon
numbers dictated by the scheme. We show explicitly that there is not
any improvement in reproducing by including the extra
term. However, our study also reveals that the excitation energies
, when calculated by the term alone (with the mass number
dependent term), are quite comparable to those calculated by the original

Renormalization analysis of intermittency in two coupled maps
The critical behavior for intermittency is studied in two coupled
one-dimensional (1D) maps. We find two fixed maps of an approximate
renormalization operator in the space of coupled maps. Each fixed map has a
common relavant eigenvaule associated with the scaling of the control parameter
of the uncoupled one-dimensional map. However, the relevant ``coupling
eigenvalue'' associated with coupling perturbation varies depending on the
fixed maps. These renormalization results are also confirmed for a

Orientational correlations in confined DNA
We study how the orientational correlations of DNA confined to nanochannels
depend on the channel diameter D by means of Monte Carlo simulations and a
mean-field theory. This theory describes DNA conformations in the
experimentally relevant regime where the Flory-de Gennes theory does not apply.
We show how local correlations determine the dependence of the end-to-end
distance of the DNA molecule upon D. Tapered nanochannels provide the necessary
resolution in D to study experimentally how the extension of confined DNA
molecules depends upon D. Our experimental and theoretical results are in

Nonlinear Development of Streaming Instabilities In Strongly Magnetized Plasmas
The nonlinear development of streaming instabilities in the current layers
formed during magnetic reconnection with a guide field is explored. Theory and
3-D particle-in-cell simulations reveal two distinct phases. First, the
parallel Buneman instability grows and traps low velocity electrons. The
remaining electrons then drive two forms of turbulence: the parallel
electron-electron two-stream instability and the nearly-perpendicular lower
hybrid instability. The high velocity electrons resonate with the turbulence
and transfer momentum to the ions and low velocity electrons.Comment: Accepted by PR
Impact of reionization on CMB polarization tests of slow-roll inflation
Estimates of inflationary parameters from the CMB B-mode polarization
spectrum on the largest scales depend on knowledge of the reionization history,
especially at low tensor-to-scalar ratio. Assuming an incorrect reionization
history in the analysis of such polarization data can strongly bias the
inflationary parameters. One consequence is that the single-field slow-roll
consistency relation between the tensor-to-scalar ratio and tensor tilt might
be excluded with high significance even if this relation holds in reality. We
explain the origin of the bias and present case studies with various tensor
amplitudes and noise characteristics. A more model-independent approach can
account for uncertainties about reionization, and we show that parametrizing
the reionization history by a set of its principal components with respect to
E-mode polarization removes the bias in inflationary parameter measurement with

Coexistence of a pectoralis quartus muscle, a supernumerary head of biceps brachii muscle and an accessory head of flexor digitorum profundus muscle
Although anatomical variations in the upper limb are frequent, coexistence of multiple combined variations is rare. During a routine educational dissection at Jeju National University Medical School, three muscular variations were found in a 75-year-old Korean male cadaver, in which a supraclavicular cephalic vein was also found in ipsilateral upper extremity during skinning. Here we describe cha- racteristics of the pectoralis quartus muscle, the supernumerary head of biceps brachii muscle and an accessory head of flexor digitorum profundus muscle, and discuss their coexistence from morphological and embryological points of view.
