Temporal Analysis of Language through Neural Language Models

We provide a method for automatically detecting change in language across time through a chronologically trained neural language model. We train the model on the Google Books Ngram corpus to obtain word vector representations specific to each year, and identify words that have changed significantly from 1900 to 2009. The model identifies words such as "cell" and "gay" as having changed during that time period. The model simultaneously identifies the specific years during which such words underwent change

    Preschool STEAM: Yes They Can!

    Get PDF
This project addresses the need for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiatives at the early childhood level. Research states that early exposure to STEM initiatives and activities positively impacts elementary students’ perceptions and dispositions (Bagiati, Yoon, Evangelou, & Ngambeki, 2010; Bybee, & Fuchs, 2006; DeJarnette, 2012). The goal of this research is to positively impact the implementation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) lessons in the Early Childhood classroom through providing professional development for the Early Childhood teachers. It is hypothesized that through professional development, resources, and support, Early Childhood teachers will build efficacy and build positive dispositions towards developing consistent STEAM lessons for their preschool students

Measured Sensitivity of the First Mark II Phased Array Feed on an ASKAP Antenna

This paper presents the measured sensitivity of CSIRO's first Mk. II phased array feed (PAF) on an ASKAP antenna. The Mk. II achieves a minimum system-temperature-over-efficiency Tsys/ηT_\mathrm{sys}/\eta of 78 K at 1.23 GHz and is 95 K or better from 835 MHz to 1.8 GHz. This PAF was designed for the Australian SKA Pathfinder telescope to demonstrate fast astronomical surveys with a wide field of view for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Electromagnetics in Advanced applications (ICEAA), 2015 International Conference o

Empirical Analysis on Top-k Gradient Sparsification for Distributed Deep Learning in a Supercomputing Environment

To train deep learning models faster, distributed training on multiple GPUs is the very popular scheme in recent years. However, the communication bandwidth is still a major bottleneck of training performance. To improve overall training performance, recent works have proposed gradient sparsification methods that reduce the communication traffic significantly. Most of them require gradient sorting to select meaningful gradients such as Top-k gradient sparsification (Top-k SGD). However, Top-k SGD has a limit to increase the speed up overall training performance because gradient sorting is significantly inefficient on GPUs. In this paper, we conduct experiments that show the inefficiency of Top-k SGD and provide the insight of the low performance. Based on observations from our empirical analysis, we plan to yield a high performance gradient sparsification method as a future work.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, The 8th International Conference on Next Generation Computing (ICNGC) 202
