An exploration of tourist shopping
The purpose of this study is to develop a conceptual model to better understand
tourists' shopping by investigating factors that influence this consumption activity based
on existing literature. Specifically, this study explored the influences of tourist’s trip
activities, travel party, tourists' perceived value of destination environment and
destination type, season of trips, trip type and mode of transportation on tourists'
shopping expenditures. Also, this study investigated the effects of socio-demographic
variables (age, education and income) on tourists’ shopping expenditures.
Based on previous research in leisure/tourism and consumer studies on shopping,
a conceptual framework of tourist shopping was proposed for this study. For the purpose
of this study, the 2003-2004 nationwide Performance/Monitor of travel tracking system
data collected by DK Shifflet and Associates (DKS & A) was utilized, and 39,410 U.S.
domestic leisure trip cases were analyzed in this study.
Tourist shopping was conceptualized as a three-dimensional representation of:
individual traveler characteristics, trip characteristics, and the destination environment.
The first dimension included respondents’ age and household income. The second dimension included trip activity type, trip party, season of trip, trip type and
transportation mode. Finally, perceived value of destination and destination type were
included in the third dimension. A multiple regression analysis was used to test the
conceptual model. Results of the study supported that the individual traveler
characteristics of age and household income are significant predictors of tourist shopping
expenditures. Also, results showed that trip related characteristics of trip party, activity
type, season of trip, trip type and transportation mode are significant predictors of tourist
shopping expenditures. Finally, it was shown that the dimension of perceived value of
destination and destination type are significant predictors of tourist shopping
expenditures. Based on the findings, a high spender group profile was provided. Results
also provide important conceptual and practical implications for further development of
tourism shopping research
Time Dependent Gene Expression Changes in the Liver of Mice Treated with Benzene
Benzene is used as a general purpose solvent. Benzene metabolism starts from phenol and ends with p-benzoquinone and o-benzoquinone. Liver injury inducted by benzene still remains a toxicologic problem. Tumor related genes and immune responsive genes have been studied in patients suffering from benzene exposure. However, gene expression profiles and pathways related to its hepatotoxicity are not known. This study reports the results obtained in the liver of BALB/C mice (SLC, Inc., Japan) administered 0.05 ml/100 g body weight of 2% benzene for six days. Serum, ALT, AST and ALP were determined using automated analyzer (Fuji., Japan). Histopathological observations were made to support gene expression data. c-DNA microarray analyses were performed using Affymetrix Gene-chip system. After six days of benzene exposure, twenty five genes were down regulated whereas nineteen genes were up-regulated. These gene expression changes were found to be related to pathways of biotransformation, detoxification, apoptosis, oxidative stress and cell cycle. It has been shown for the first time that genes corresponding to circadian rhythms are affected by benzene. Results suggest that gene expression profile might serve as potential biomarkers of hepatotoxicity during benzene exposure
Influence of Calcium Sulfate Type on Evolution of Reaction Products and Strength in NaOH- and CaO-Activated Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag
This study investigated the influences of CaSO4 type (i.e., anhydrite vs. gypsum) on strength development and reaction products in the activation of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) when different activators (i.e., CaO vs. NaOH) and sources of GGBFS were used. In the CaO-activation, the addition of calcium sulfates greatly enhanced 28-day strengths, regardless of the choice of CaSO4 or GGBFS source, through increasing the quantities of reaction products and reducing pore volume and size. However, in the NaOH-activation, the use of calcium sulfates showed the complex dependency of strength on the choice of CaSO4 type and GGBFS source, and it barely produced beneficial effects on the quantity of reaction products and reduction of pore volume and size. Thus, the results in this study indicate that the combination of CaO-activation and calcium sulfates is a more effective means of activating GGBFS to gain enhanced strength and significant quality control than the use of gypsum with NaOH-activation
A novel family VII esterase with industrial potential from compost metagenomic library
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Among the vast microbial genomic resources now available, most microbes are unculturable in the laboratory. A culture-independent metagenomic approach is a novel technique that circumvents this culture limitation. For the screening of novel lipolytic enzymes, a metagenomic library was constructed from compost, and the clone of <it>estCS2 </it>was selected for lipolytic properties on a tributyrin-containing medium.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The <it>estCS2 </it>sequence encodes a protein of 570 amino acid residues, with a predicted molecular mass of 63 kDa, and based on amino acid identity it most closely matches (45%) the carboxylesterase from <it>Haliangium ochraceum </it>DSM 14365. EstCS2 belong to family VII, according to the lipolytic enzyme classification proposed by Arpigny and Jaeger, and it retains the catalytic triad Ser<sub>245</sub>-Glu<sub>363</sub>-His<sub>466 </sub>that is typical of an α/β hydrolase. The Ser<sub>245 </sub>residue in the catalytic triad of EstCS2 is located in the consensus active site motif GXSXG. The EstCS2 exhibits strong activity toward <it>p</it>-nitrophenyl caproate (C6), and it is stable up to 60°C with an optimal enzymatic activity at 55°C. The maximal activity is observed at pH 9, and it remains active between pH 6-10. EstCS2 shows remarkable stability in up to 50% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or dimethylformamide (DMF). The enzyme has the ability to cleave sterically hindered esters of tertiary alcohol, as well as to degrade polyurethanes, which are widely used in various industries.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The high stability of EstCS2 in organic solvents and its activity towards esters of ketoprofen and tertiary alcohols, and in polyurethane suggests that it has potential uses for many applications in biotransformation and bioremediation.</p
Betacellulin-Induced Beta Cell Proliferation and Regeneration Is Mediated by Activation of ErbB-1 and ErbB-2 Receptors
BACKGROUND: Betacellulin (BTC), a member of the epidermal growth factor family, is known to play an important role in regulating growth and differentiation of pancreatic beta cells. Growth-promoting actions of BTC are mediated by epidermal growth factor receptors (ErbBs), namely ErbB-1, ErbB-2, ErbB-3 and ErbB-4; however, the exact mechanism for beta cell proliferation has not been elucidated. Therefore, we investigated which ErbBs are involved and some molecular mechanisms by which BTC regulates beta cell proliferation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The expression of ErbB-1, ErbB-2, ErbB-3, and ErbB-4 mRNA was detected by RT-PCR in both a beta cell line (MIN-6 cells) and C57BL/6 mouse islets. Immunoprecipitation and western blotting analysis showed that BTC treatment of MIN-6 cells induced phosphorylation of only ErbB-1 and ErbB-2 among the four EGF receptors. BTC treatment resulted in DNA synthetic activity, cell cycle progression, and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU)-positive staining. The proliferative effect was blocked by treatment with AG1478 or AG825, specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors of ErbB-1 and ErbB-2, respectively. BTC treatment increased mRNA and protein levels of insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2), and this was blocked by the ErbB-1 and ErbB-2 inhibitors. Inhibition of IRS-2 by siRNA blocked cell cycle progression induced by BTC treatment. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice injected with a recombinant adenovirus expressing BTC and treated with AG1478 or AG825 showed reduced islet size, reduced numbers of BrdU-positive cells in the islets, and did not attain BTC-mediated remission of diabetes. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These results suggest that BTC exerts proliferative activity on beta cells through the activation of ErbB-1 and ErbB-2 receptors, which may increase IRS-2 expression, contributing to the regeneration of beta cells
The role of social support and social networks in smoking behavior among middle and older aged people in rural areas of South Korea: A cross-sectional study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although the number of studies on anti-smoking interventions has increased, studies focused on identifying social contextual factors in rural areas are scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of social support and social networks in smoking behavior among middle and older aged people living in rural areas of South Korea.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study employed a cross-sectional design. Participants included 1,057 adults, with a mean age of 60.7 years, residing in rural areas. Information on participants' tobacco use, stress, social support, and social networks was collected using structured questionnaires. The chi-square test, the t-test, ANOVA, and logistic regression were used for data analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The overall smoking prevalence in the study was 17.4% (men, 38.8%; women, 5.1%). Overall, stress was high among women, and social support was high among men. Smokers had high levels of social support (t = -2.90, p = .0038) and social networks (t = -2.22, p = .0271), as compared to non- and former smokers. Those in the high social support group were likely to be smokers (AOR = 2.21, 95% CI 1.15-4.26). Women with moderate social ties were less likely to smoke (AOR = 0.18, 95% CI 0.05-0.61).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There was a protective role of a moderate social network level among women, and a high level of social support was associated with smoking behaviors in rural areas. Findings suggest the need for a comprehensive understanding of the functions and characteristics of social contextual factors including social support and social networks in order to conduct more effective anti-smoking interventions in rural areas.</p
A study on the tuning parameter of continuous variable valve for reverse continuous damper

in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions for
passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for
a passenger car suspension is developed, which is controlled
actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low
cost, and low energy consumption. To get a fast response of
the damper, a reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to
get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled
proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse
continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper
which offers good body control with reduced transferred input
force from the tire, compared with any other type of suspension
system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and
compression damping forces can be tuned independently, of
which the variable valve is placed externally. The rate of
pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-off
becomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases, which
means that the blow-off slope is controllable using the fixed
orifice size. Damping forces are measured with the change of
the solenoid current at the different piston velocities to confirm
the maximum hysteresis of 20 N, linearity, and variance of
damping force. The damping force variance is wide and
continuous, and is controlled by the spool opening, of which
scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse
continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected
to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in
passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the
design is confirmed through a real car test
